To ask advice on how to keep a shower cubicle clean?

I have a lovely new shower and don't know the best way to keep it looking good. My old one had scummy doors and sides that I just could not get to look clean. The new one will be in use daily so I need a plan to care for it. Its in a hard water area. Not a very Christmassy subject, but grateful for any advice.

It's the little black mouldy bits on the seal that annoy me - I squeegee religiously and spray but it doesn't prevent them

Wendyspotatopeeler · 14/12/2023 07:47

A bit random but works really well, clean with car wash that contains wax.
The wax stops water sticking to glass and tiles.

PermanentTemporary · 14/12/2023 07:48

One of these, every time.

People on here gave me the squigee tip, which has worked for me.

I still get occasional red patches in my grout, but not black. Not to hijack the thread but I'm open to any tips that don't involve very harsh cleaning products.

DejaVoodoo · 14/12/2023 07:54

Before squeegee, make sure all toiletry traces, like conditioner is rinsed away with shower head as it is this that moulds.
Then squeegee, shower spray, and once a week spray with a bleach solution.

HelpMeGetThrough · 14/12/2023 08:03

Drying tiles, silicon sealant is key to keeping that looking good. I always do this and ours looks like the day it was finished after 3 years.

The minute there is any discolouration of the grout, use an anti mould cleaner on it.

Shower screen, everything everyone else has said.

I'm replacing the silicon sealant over the Xmas break, it's not broken down, but I'm a picky bugger and think it needs doing.

Our bathroom is fully cleaned each day, as my immune system is shot to pieces, so it needs to be as clean as possible, but as a minimum, I'd be doing the shower like I do now every day.

Method daily shower spray!!! I swear by it. I hardly ever have to clean my shower door (though i do in my deep cleans) because the spray works so well!

I think Aldi do a shower spray in a purple bottle - do you just spray and leave it without wiping?

Lonecatwithkitten · 14/12/2023 08:09

I am another person who squigees and then method daily shower. To make it more economical I buy the 2 litre bottles on line and then top up my in shower bottle. There is less plastic waste too.

shearwater2 · 14/12/2023 08:14

Definitely squeegee is a good idea. If you do get a soap scum build up on the glass then Viakal may be required - I use that anyway for cleaning the rest of the shower. Mr Muscle glass cleaner on the glass with kitchen roll should do the trick mostly. Then every now and then you may need mould spray on the tiles in the corners.

Usernamecreateddone · 14/12/2023 08:16

Useful thread. I do most of the things memtioned but will admit to a blast of mould and mildew remover every now and again as normal cleaner doesn't get rid of the black mould.

Best tip is to wipe it dry while still in it, but I don't do that as often as I should.

TWmover · 14/12/2023 08:23

Just wanted to share that the HG mould spray is amazing for anyone tackling mould. Doesn't need scrubbing and seems to help prevent return too

MMAMPWGHAP · 14/12/2023 08:44

If the glass in your shower has special treatment on it then don’t use Viakal. Mine recommended 50/50 vinegar/water instead. I forgot and used Viakal on one panel and had to use a Shower Shield to get back the original finish (one where water beads rather than spreads over the glass).

I've never quite mastered cleaning grout. Our shower is just over a year old, and bits of the grout are going yellow. I'm not sure if this is a discoloration due to lack of light (like gloss) or dirt/mould. Mould remover spray and a scrub doesn't seem to do anything.

Anyone got any tips?

(P.S. good thread, ty!)

Daffodilsandtuplips · 14/12/2023 08:47

Soft water area here. Our en suite was redone four years ago, I was sick of the grout looking awful and had the tiles replaced with sheets of cladding. It’s a game changer. Throughly recommend it to anyone.
I squeegee the cubicle walls and shower door after each shower and once a week I’ll use a microfibre cloth and Fairy liquid to wash them down, rinsed well, and then dried off with old towels I’ve cut up.

Lincslady53 · 14/12/2023 08:51

Always get up first and have the first shower, so your partner has thecsecond shower and has to clean it. Then moan at them if it isn't clean enough. Seems to work for my partner.

You could try using a toothbrush with a whitening toothpaste or a cream cleaner like cif?

Tbh though, any regular cleaning, even just a soapy cloth while you're in the shower keeps it reasonable I think, particularly if you dry it afterwards.

Disclaimer - mine is not spotless but I wouldn't mind my mother-in-law seeing it!

Wiglio · 14/12/2023 08:58

Agree with Method shower spray, smells lovely too

Any tips for those of us in a soft water area?

I get those black mouldy bits everywhere. It feels like a right faff getting into every nook and cranny to try and get rid of them.

I do have a squeegee. Would that method spray work better?

This really works..
When you get mould on the silicone sealant of your shower, soak a strip of loo roll in Milton and press it on firmly. Leave overnight. Peel off the next morning and Voila! Sparkling white sealant!

Itsjustmeee · 14/12/2023 09:06

use one of those glass wipers but actually dry it afterwards with a towel this gets rid of the residue water drops

also to avoid mould dry the tiles after using the shower

sashh · 14/12/2023 09:07

I've recently got a window vacuum that can also clean tiles, mirrors and I assume shower cubicles.

I don't know who you have in your family living with you OP but in a huge generalisation as its a gadget it encourages male use.

izzywizzywont · 14/12/2023 10:20

White vinegar and an old toothbrush, I just did mine yesterday and it worked really well

GasPanic · 14/12/2023 11:18

Four things.

One get a water softener.

Two get a squeege. Probably one with a clear plastic scraper rather than a black rubber scraper, as the die in the black plastic may leave marks on the walls.
After you finish showering scrape down all the water onto the shower tray, then push it from the tray down the plughole.

Three. Try to vent as much humid air from the bathroom as you can after you have showered. So use the extractor fan.

Do not leave anything lying around in the shower, as it will probably collect mould.

Scraping the walls/shower screen down makes a big difference in my experience.

ActDottie · 14/12/2023 11:33

We squeegee it and spray it down with daily shower cleaner after every use.

When doing a deeper clean I find using a toothbrush to scrub really useful to get all the bits in the little gaps.

Longer term we plan to redesign our en-suite to have a shower which is open with just a single pain of glass to clean.

Im such a perfectionist when I clean that I get really down about not being able to clean the shower cubicle fully despite spending a couple of hours on it!

Usernamecreateddone · 14/12/2023 11:40

A couple of hours @ActDottie? Now that is commitment! Ten mins max in my house 😂
