AIBU to ask any teachers what end of term presents they really want

I always dread buying end of term presents for my children's teachers...not because I begrudge the money, but because I don't know what to get and imagine they always end up with a load of knick-knacks and chocolate they don't really want, or wine when they don't drink. So to save me from the angst this year, if you're a teacher, what end of term presents would you choose for a budget of around £10?

It’s really not expected. But if you want to, the gifts that go down well at my school are either vouchers, book tokens or stationary. My very own scissors!!!

sprigatito · 13/12/2023 16:20

Shop-bought food and drink gifts are generally popular, because they are "safe" (homemade some teachers are squeamish about)

Personally I'd always love a card made by a child, and I have a high tolerance for trinkets, silly mugs etc, but not everyone does.

C1N1C · 13/12/2023 16:20

Lol, teachers are people too... treat them like any stranger you want to buy a gift for.

I don't drink but love the wine as I can regift it or put it in cooking.

Chocolate is a winner every time, and if not, good time to regift.

Nothing personal like clothes..

And I don't think anyone would decline cash in envelope!

Christmasusernamepending · 13/12/2023 16:20

Personally, I'd love a Starbucks or Costa gift card x

Xatz63 · 13/12/2023 16:30

At my school homemade card by student is more meaningful, just a thankyou from a parent means more than any gift. We dont expect presents because times are tough for a lot of our parents.

stargirl1701 · 13/12/2023 16:34

Personally, nothing! A hand made card from the child I am teaching is far more meaningful.

If you must, I have begun suggesting over the last few years that you could buy children's books from charity shops for my class library.

If you really must, a book token.

Tooshytoshine · 13/12/2023 16:35

Honestly, I really love the card. Bought or made as not every child is a natural artist. I keep them in a folder and when I am feeling like teaching isn't worth it take them out and look at them.

If the gift is too lavish, I feel guilty. Small chocs or a bag of sweets are enough or a bookmark etc.

Trinkets are hard to keep and although lovely, I struggle to keep all my own kids hand made items.

Curioushorse · 13/12/2023 16:38

It's the cards I keep. I also save emails from parents.

Absolutely zero is expected though, and I'm horrified reading these threads where people are worrying about buying things. We love your kids and we don't want money or time spent on us that takes anything away from them.

mineallmine · 13/12/2023 16:39

I just got a present today from a child and I love it. It's a scarf, long and warm. Also a candle which I've been burning in the classroom. Neither were very expensive but both lovely. And the child was delighted to see me enjoy the presents.

wineandmaltesershappyme · 13/12/2023 16:41

This is great thank you. My daughters teachers are amazing and i want to get them a little something to show how much what they do is appreciated.

Parker231 · 13/12/2023 16:41

My teacher friends keep the homemade cards but the majority of presents aren’t things they would choose so are donated to charity shops and food banks

Do you buy for the office staff, TA’s, caretaker/maintenance staff, cleaners, catering staff etc?

wineandmaltesershappyme · 13/12/2023 16:44

TA's yes and send in tubs of chocolates for the staff room for everyone else

2mummies1baby · 13/12/2023 16:45

Vouchers all the way, but NOT One For All vouchers- no shop has any idea how to process them! M&S or John Lewis always go down well. Handwritten cards from the children mean the most though!

2mummies1baby · 13/12/2023 16:45

Ooh, or a Costa/Starbucks giftcard is always lovely!

Gloriousgardener11 · 13/12/2023 16:47

Always buy Costa or Starbucks vouchers.

Cherrysoup · 13/12/2023 16:57

Just a card with a comment re the child enjoying my lessons is fab. I don’t eat chocolate/sweets or drink, so would just have to give away anything like that.

mumsneedwine · 13/12/2023 16:58

Sleep. Lots of sleep.

Robinkitty · 13/12/2023 16:59

We get tons of chocolates and biscuits which get shared out amongst us or saved and eaten during training days, very much appreciated I might add but also we do get too many.
Personally, i would love a mug - I don’t have one given to me by a child but if I got one I would use it every day at work and be very proud of it. I do have a lovely pen given to me last year which I use daily. Some teachers and TA’s might have lots of these I guess..
cards made by the children are lovely, it’s really the thought that counts and small thanks, even verbal make my day x

Are we really supposed to get the teachers something after every term. Not being funny but fuck that. I don't get gifts every 7 weeks at work. End of year yeah maybe if they have been supportive.

Newnamedillydally · 13/12/2023 17:10

We have always done a collection, £10 per child then vouchers bought for teacher/ Ta/ pe teacher etc. Then each class donates a bit out of the collection to buy chocolates for lunch assistants and cleaners.

Seven weeks is half a term. There are three terms in a year. Six half terms.

mumsneedwine · 13/12/2023 17:14

@OnAir . No teacher expects presents at any time of year.

If your child is in secondary it's generally expected that you would buy their maths teacher a gift every 7 weeks.

With the caveat that a present is not required and a card is lovely (DD loves the ones the children have done) this is what DD has had and loved:

M and S Christmas bits - like chocolate covered nuts, Xmas biscuits
Flowers
Home made sourdough
Home made (small bottle) cherry vodka
Eggs from their chickens in a decorated box
Fancy soap
Scented candles
A water bottle

Also happy with JL vouchers
