To think about not having a toilet brush?

So, during a particularly scintillating conversation at work today, about the state of the staff toilets, a colleague mentioned that she would never have a toilet brush in her house, because they are disgusting! Another colleague agreed.
I was surprised. While I hate the toilet brush, and its revolting little pot, I don't know of another alternative, other than putting my hand down there. Do they just use bleach? I don't really like using super strong chemicals any more than necessary.
I'd love to not have one. What do people do??

I was really surprised when moving to the UK as a child that people used toilet brushes as they are so unhygienic. However, I come from a country where there are bidets and most toilets have almost a tap attached to them so the risk of ‘skids’ is much lower.

At home we use bleach, but I appreciate the chemicals are not for everyone. My husband was quite embarrassed at first with not having a toilet brush because it meant on occasion I would see the remnants of his toilet trips. And I am sure some guests to our house feel this also. But poop is normal and natural. Give it a bit of a bleach and close the toilet lid, it will be gone with the next flush.

I’ve never done anything beyond use bleach or another cleaner, spray it on then leave for the next flush. And we have no residual stains etc.

Get a shetafa fitted.

No more bog brush OR bog roll.

Yes I would agree, no need for toilet paper or brush.

Jaysus what are people doing with their brushes eating off of them? If your toilet brushes are that gross you're using them wrong.

TheCadoganArms · 12/12/2023 17:38

So who cleans their toilet brush with a hot wash in the dishwasher?

<lights blue touch paper and walks off whistling nonchalantly>

Topseyt123 · 12/12/2023 17:39

I am the very proud owner of two bog brushes. One beside the toilet in the bathroom upstairs and one beside the downstairs toilet.

Neither are gross. They are rinsed in the flushing water of the toilet, which I will have cleaned by brushing around it with bleach.

I think not having a bog brush is batshit.

Frankley · 12/12/2023 17:41

I use Duck toilet "brush " it uses a disposable bit on it's end that you just unclip (without touching it)
after use and fush down cleaned toilet. I would never have a toilet brush again.

ActDottie · 12/12/2023 17:45

We have toilet brushes. Although I recently swapped to a silicone one for downstairs loo and much prefer it to brushes.

I use the brush to give the loo a good scrub with bleach mostly as it freaks me out if I put my hand down the loo to scrub it instead. I suppose I just want to put as much distance between myself and potential poo particles as possible!

I have bad memories of the toilet brush when I was a child of the little basin thing it sits in being filled with gross dirty water

Ahh but I learned on another thread to balance the toilet brush horizontally so that any liquid drips into the basin. You secure it by putting the seat down on the handle. Works a treat.

Hope I've explained this properly

I'd be loath to be flushing something else down the loo that is going to possibly block the sewers

IDoughnutKnow · 12/12/2023 17:57

Never mind brushes: the problem on here is the number of people talking about "toilets". They are lavatories or loos. Not toilets.

NightmareGirl · 12/12/2023 18:00

@Purplebunnie yes that would work

If I’m in public I call it the bathroom

Shouldgetupearlier · 12/12/2023 18:04

I’ve got a toilet brush. If debris is present, then it gets flushed before the brush goes in, the brush gets rinsed before going back in the pot, which has a lid so no one gets to see it unless they need the brush. It’s got to be better than all the disposable crap or using loads of bleach each time there’s a mark.

TheCadoganArms · 12/12/2023 16:14

Have to confess to owning a toilet brush. Can't believe all the faff of alternative methods being described above when a brush cleans up everything in seconds. It sits out of sight in a pot full of bleach so hardly smells or is an eyesore.

You know how there is only one voice of restraint and reason allowed in a MN toilet brush thread? Flowers I have chosen yours.Congratulations.

But ... why? A bathroom is the place where you have a bath. A public loo is a public loo.

NightmareGirl · 12/12/2023 18:07

@IDoughnutKnow I’ve never called it a loo and I just don’t want to ask “where is the toilet” to a waiter

violetcuriosity · 12/12/2023 18:16

Before my partner moved in I only needed to use bleach after every poo but now he's here I have to have a toilet brush and I hate it.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 12/12/2023 18:17

If I understand correctly skid marks are smears of actual poo on the toilet bowl? In that case, genuine question, how does just pouring bleach into the toilet get rid of them? Does it somehow lift the poo off the porcelain? Or react with it somehow to remove it? I don't understand how you get rid of poo which is stuck to the porcelain without scribbling in some way. Or do you pour it down then keep flushing until the force of the water eventually washes it off?

I do have a silicone toilet brush, but very rarely have poo marks so it's generally used with ecover toilet cleaner to clean under the rim, to stave off limescale and to keep the porcelain shiny and sanitised.

Crumpleton · 12/12/2023 18:20

I use flat head paddle type and the round head silicone brushes, they're really easy to keep clean.

Crishell · 12/12/2023 18:24

I don't understand this.

Your toilet brush sits next to the toilet. It's only used to scrub off skid marks or unplug the loo.

What's the problem?
It's not like you're going to use it to brush your teeth as well?
It just sits there, so why is it an issue? Does it give off some kind of toxic gas that ends up sublimating on your cutlery or something?

amispeakingintongues · 12/12/2023 18:28

No toilet brush here. Just bleach.

For stubborn poo stained limescale marks use one of these overnight. They are amazing and no touching required

Seriously?
Absolutely everyone I know calls them toilets. I don't understand this faux politeness about not calling a toilet a toilet. Is your name Hyacinth?

Believe me, a waiter would expect you to just ask where the toilets were.

Knackeredmommy · 12/12/2023 18:30

I think they're disgusting too, I use the duck handle that uses disposable brush heads.

RampantIvy · 12/12/2023 18:33

I can't get over how germ phobic and fastidious some mumsnetters are. A silicon toilet brush cleans brilliantly and is easy to clean after use.

What's the issue?
