To think about not having a toilet brush?

So, during a particularly scintillating conversation at work today, about the state of the staff toilets, a colleague mentioned that she would never have a toilet brush in her house, because they are disgusting! Another colleague agreed.
I was surprised. While I hate the toilet brush, and its revolting little pot, I don't know of another alternative, other than putting my hand down there. Do they just use bleach? I don't really like using super strong chemicals any more than necessary.
I'd love to not have one. What do people do??

We have those silicone brush things which feel much less gross that the brush! But they are £30! So expensive. Maybe ask for some for Xmas OP 😂😂

I am a no toilet brush person after finding my DD age 3 with Down Syndrome brushing her hair with it💗😫

I got some ace silicon ones on Temu (I know). Much more hygienic.

Daisies12 · 12/12/2023 16:35

I don’t see how they are unhygienic? It’s only going in the toilet. I hate using bleach it’s so toxic. I’m always shocked how ultra obsessed people on MN are with hygiene. No wonder everyone has allergies and asthma, I rarely use any chemicals at home and we’re never ill

I have bad memories of the toilet brush when I was a child of the little basin thing it sits in being filled with gross dirty water

GnomeDePlume · 12/12/2023 16:42

We are in a very hard water area. Bleaches will get the porcelain looking white but hard water means the surface isn't polished. A scrub will be necessary. We have toilet brushes and are not ashamed.

HandyLittleGadget · 12/12/2023 16:43

I've been married for 43 years, never had a toilet brush. I use bleach and toilet roll.

People who keep gloves for "that purpose," why is that any better than keeping a toilet brush for "that purpose?" Assuming you wash your toilet brush?

Not saying it’s better, just what I do. My mum never had a toilet brush, it’s just not a ‘thing’ I am in the habit of using.

AHFaemale · 12/12/2023 16:44

toilet brushes in hospitals and cafes are gross - cos they are used to wipe skid marks off the toilet pan.

I have a toilet brush but it's used to give a clean pan (no skiddies) a good wash and wash under the rim. The brush is never dirty or gross so it really depends on how you use it.

RougeFraise · 12/12/2023 16:50

bleach here. The cheaper the better. Haven’t had a brush for years, they are absolutely grim.

mumof2many1943 · 12/12/2023 16:51

HandyLittleGadget I am totally with you, clean up after yourself 🫢

Also in a hard water area. The bleach is to get the skid marks off. I use limescale remover about once a week, but don’t really need to.

Do you shit Maltesers? You never have poo on the pan? Not even after a few Guinness and a jalfrazi?

it's mind over matter. If one is determined only to ever have a nice dry poo, nice dry poos are what one will have. It's all about self-control.

There are many, many threads on this topic.

Don't clean your teeth with your toilet brush and you'll be fine.

That was so funny 🤣
We have a loo brush. There's bigger worries.

Ittastesvile · 12/12/2023 16:55

I use a toilet brush for removing skid marks immediately. Tbh I give the toilet brush zero thought the rest of the time and don't understand the problem.

If I'm actually cleaning the toilet I use a sponge dedicated to that purpose. Hands right in there. I use Bloo tablets and sandpaper sometimes too as I live in a very hard water area and the toilet is a total pita to keep clean. The toilet brush isn't enough for that as it doesn't get in the cracks.

I get it.........to defeat the poo, you must become the poo.

It is unfathomable to me how some people think sticking their hand in the toilet to clean it is less disgusting than owning a brush designed so you don’t have to put your hand in Confused

Vettrianofan · 12/12/2023 17:04

This is ground breaking stuff OP but I actually use a loo brush and bleach together to clean the loo😱

Sexlivesofthepotatomen · 12/12/2023 17:11

Didn't someone on here say they put their toilet brush in the dishwasher to clean it?

LemonLight · 12/12/2023 17:11

We have a silicone one, it's easier to clean than a bristle one and less disgusting (although still disgusting) and it gets replaced often. No flipping way is my hand going down the toilet! I want one of the disposable ones but so bad for the environment I feel too guilty to get one.

TheGoogleMum · 12/12/2023 17:15

I'm team toilet brush over putting my hand in. Between DH with IBS and a 5 yr old who doesn't have the hang of flushing we definitely do have skidmarks that won't be shifted just from bleach, needs scrubbing. I do remind DH to scrub it as he sometimes forgets and it isn't my job to clean up his poo
