To be upset and disappointed in the store experience?

Me and my partner went to Paris as a birthday treat and he said he would get me a purse in a designer store (I have like one other designer bag that I bought years ago when living at home so it was a very rare splurge)

We walked up to the store and the man at the door didn’t hold it open, so a bit confused we stepped back and a couple walked around us and the door was held open for them straight away.

We walked in behind them, I was looking at the glass cabinet when I was eventually approached and I asked to view one. He reluctantly got it out, didn’t talk me through it. A vast contrast to how the other customer was being talked to behind me regarding her purchase.

All other customers had drinks, instead I got the previous customers used water bottle and glass set down in front of me. I questioned why we didn’t get a drink and was told “I forgot”

We did buy it but only because I knew my partner had organised this and I didn’t want him to think I was hurt that they clearly treated me as different because I wasn’t dripping in designer and assumed I wasn’t worth the experience as their commission from me was meaningless.

Aibu to be disappointed?

Usually helps to carry one designer item (doesn’t matter how scruffy you look - if you have a fancy handbag they’ll fall all over you).
still, they should treat all customers the same, and I would have walked out again, letting them know that their customer service is awful and you will not shop on any of their shops again…

Because it didn’t have a handle? I assumed I’d got the wrong entrance. Irrelevant really.

I was trying to work it out too sorry. So it's a door you can only open from inside if you're the staff? And if you're a potential customer they have to sort of vet you to see if you're allowed in? This sounds horrible I'm sorry OP.

WandaWonder · 11/12/2023 21:25

Maybe people are finally relasing designer is not the special thing people think it is, it is just the same stuff with a name put on it

No really cares who has designer or not

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 11/12/2023 21:25

Shit like this really pisses me off, presuming you don't have money by the way you're dressed is so outdated.
They were snobs OP and I'm sorry that they spoilt the experience for you. I'm also disappointed you gave them the sale that they didn't deserve.

Have to agree with this. It would be very unusual for staff in high end stores in central Paris not to speak English. The haughtiness thing - sorry, but it really is no worse than London.

Sounds more like there was just confusion that you didn't just open the door and walk in, but it's a shame you didn't have a good experience, especially as it was your birthday.

Maybe I shouldn’t have mentioned the door thing, it just seemed to set the tone.

I’m just upset about the huge difference of how I was treated with the other customer (who was wearing everything designer). She was being talked through the different options at length, was given a drink.

Then I just get a dirty glass and bottle placed down in front of me by a man who couldn’t have made it more obvious he didn’t want to serve me.

Appreciate the quote from Pretty Woman

@inthedrunktankk Yes that I would definitely have been pissed off with to be fair! Like others have said, maybe complain? I hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in Paris anyway.

I was dressed in dark jeans and dark tshirt, loafers and an olive green trench coat. So definitely not dripping in designer or particularly fashionable but the way they acted was like I’d walked in wearing muddy trainers 🙄

Definitely should never assume, I remember seeing a woman who worked in LV and made a huge amount of commission off one man that no one else in store wanted to serve because he was dressed “scruffy”

That’s 100% your opinion. Which is an absolutely valid one but it doesn’t apply to everyone. Some people do care about designer.

And that’s relevant to this thread how? 😄

Mirabai · 11/12/2023 21:33

That’s what designer shops are like. They fawn over customers who are clearly super rich because they want to make money.

Doesn’t seem to put people off designer nonsense though.

Didimum · 11/12/2023 21:33

Was it just one assistant there, or where you treated like by a number of them?

NalafromtheLionKing · 11/12/2023 21:34

See, I might have been a bit of a bitch here (40s so have learned the art of not giving a fuck). “Excuse me, shop assistant, what are your drink options?”

Waitingfordoggo · 11/12/2023 21:34

I can’t stand this sort of thing. Humans thinking they’re better than other humans because of perceived status or wealth or whatever. So unbelievably shallow and thick. This whole designer fashion scene makes me cringe and I wouldn’t go anywhere near it, but they should have treated you with the same respect they showed the other customers.

The designers don’t care about you though.

It’s a good lesson in who you give your money to.

This is just my opinion, but why on earth would would you want to go into somewhere that essentially treats people like shit based on what the staff perceive your wealth to be? Granted, i grew up poor, so have never felt comfortable in those types of places, but ewww. It's so unclassy for them to be so snobby.

That explains it all really

I was once given a fake Louis Vutten bag for a present and my sister laughed that I didn’t get why people in a fancy department store were running to help me😅

easilydistracted1 · 11/12/2023 21:37

I'm guessing you're English and the other customers were French. You didn't attempt to speak non perfect french in an English accent did you? Still you bought a bag not an experience so if you like the bag it's all good. Although a coffee would be nice and the old glasses is a bit rude. It's also reminding me of pretty woman. Were you definitely wearing a full outfit under the trench coat. This would be most easily explained by forgetting your trousers 😂

OftIwandered · 11/12/2023 21:37

Sounds very rude by the shop assistant. When you're buying something like this the whole shopping experience is a large part of the fun. If you ever find yourself in a similar position look for someone else to serve you/get the commission

Atethehalloweenchocs · 11/12/2023 21:41

There was an article I read not long ago which said that luxury brands actually sell more when their assistants are rude. Cant remember why exactly, but it all made sense at the time.

The thing is I know that in my head, I know what the markups are, and I know companies artificial limit supply of things even going to the point of destroying what they don't sell, so they don't have to put them on sale and "damage the brand".

Yet I still lust after such and such designer pieces.

(To be fair I think it is ok, if you just limit it to one or 2 special things)

That’s interesting. I suppose it’s because people think ‘Fuck you, I’ll show you I’ve got money and I’m worthy’. They want their Pretty Woman experience!

therealcookiemonster · 11/12/2023 21:45

aah OP, the problem with you and others like you is that you are too nice. this is the kind of situation where my inner bitch comes out. you have to just out haughty and out snob these pretentious wankers. if they look down their nose, you look at them as if they smell of 3 week old roadkill. it's just a shop, they are just selling the same thing as everyone else. the quality is only marginally better (my family are in the leather trade, a lot of these big brands use poor quality leather). the mark ups are huge and literally the value is based on what people have been convinced to believe is acceptable.
