DDs school want me to COVID test her, AIBU to say no?

Dd, who is in primary school, has got the cold that’s been going round. She’s not too unwell in herself, and is happily playing, but she has a husky voice and a cough. She’s maybe a bit more tired than normal, but nothing that would mean she would need to stay off school. If she was unwell enough to miss school, I’d keep her off.

Her teacher pulled me aside at pickup time and asked me if she’d taken a COVID test. I said no, she hadn’t. Teacher asked me why not, and I explained that she wasn’t unwell enough to miss school, and so there was no point testing her for COVID. Teacher said that I should test her anyway, and if positive she should stay home. I explained that myself and my partner both have to work, we don’t get enough leave as it is, and whilst if DD was actually unwell in herself and couldn’t go to school, one of us could stay off with her, but since she’s not, we really don't have the resources to be taking time off. Also, I don’t have easy access to tests and I’d rather not buy a test when I don’t need to.

AIBU to tell this teacher that I wouldn’t be testing DD?

They’re the ones writing out though, aren’t they? They are the ones giving out attendance awards etc. Are we expected to glean from these letters that really the school doesn’t mean it, or..?

My Covid bingo card is nearly full.

It's like a 2020 retro thread.

If shout HOUSE you'll have to stay in it for at least 5 days.

ichundich · 11/12/2023 17:56

I see education for children is still dispensable. But heaven forbid you want to take them out a few days early to save ££££ on a family holiday.

Ravenclaw101 · 11/12/2023 17:44

Well maybe schools should stop with the attendance pressure then 🤷🏻‍♀️ can’t have it both ways.

You know the pressure is from government, not the school directly, yes?

wjpa · 11/12/2023 17:59

Regardless of the rules, spreading Covid is an awful thing to do and should be avoided if possible. My db is a teacher and ended up on a ventilator with Covid (triple vaccinated). Perhaps your dd’s teacher doesn’t want to give Covid to a vulnerable family member. Perhaps there are vulnerable staff or kids. You just don’t know.

YANBU. I don't know why people are still making a ridiculous fuss over an illness which is no worse than a bad-ish cold.

And I don’t know how people are so lacking in…what? Intelligence? Memory? Realism? That they put covid in that category.
Yes, it can be mild. But it’s often way, way worse than a cold. And you must know that, surely?

Have you had Covidiot yet? Haven't seen that one in a while.

I know, right? Even ‘superspreader’ made a comeback, haven’t heard that one in a while.

I just feel that if children are once again the lowest of the low when it comes to Covid, and will be the only people having to test, then it seems rather unfair. There are so many customer facing roles out there where they come into contact with Covid that it seems wrong that children are being penalised yet again, when they don’t even feel ill.

You’ve got it backwards. Children are the lowest of the low because nobody cares they are crammed into buildings with no ventilation (if they are still open after the ceilings falling down, that is) with nobody caring if they get ill or not.

My memory is all too good. I remember the fuss from 2020 and I think it is ludicrous that it is still going on now.

Everyone saying OP is not being unreasonable... would you be happy to be surrounded by covid positive co-workers (some of whom won't cover their mouths when coughing /sneezing) so close to Christmas? That is essentially what you are expecting of the teacher.

The likelihood is that we are all going to be working with someone who has Covid, given that testing is now not necessary. Everyone else gets on with it, why not teachers ?

I don't know anyone IRL who is still fussing about Covid. I see a lot of bleating online, but IRL we are all back to normal, which is how it should be.

Fuss.
OK.
Tells me all I need to know about your awareness of science and care for others.
You'll come out with some tired conspiracy nonsense next.

stayathomer · 11/12/2023 18:04

Is it not handy to know if she does or not? We tested September as son’s friend tested positive then son had a horrendous cough, then he tested positive and we all got it one by one (adults in a heap, most kids fine, one still isn’t fully over it). You may as well test just to even know she doesn’t have it

Swishswish26 · 11/12/2023 18:04

@VanityDiesHard but children so rarely get ill with Covid that it wouldn’t even matter! I’d be more upset if they caught a sickness bug. Children have always been crammed into classrooms, it’s the same all over the world.

We’re all ‘back to normal’ because we aren’t being given a choice. People are still dying of it and being disabled by it. We should be taking some action to protect ourselves.

You’re aware of how contagious illnesses work though, yes?

stayathomer · 11/12/2023 18:05

Ps if we had a test for flus, cold etc I’d do them too, just to figure out what we were dealing with! People are very paranoid about Covid tests, I don’t quite get it!!

I totally agree with you, I think you maybe responded to the wrong person. I have zero time for the pearl clutching over Covid.

MadeOfAllWork · 11/12/2023 18:06

A test wouldn’t do much good anyway. My friend who works in a hospital lab says that the tests don’t pick up the current strains anyway.

I almost certainly have Covid at the moment but like many other workplaces, including hospitals, I’m expected in if I’m well enough.

CoatOfArms · 11/12/2023 18:06

Swishswish26 · 11/12/2023 16:47

YANBU at all. You do not need to test your dd and the teacher was wrong to even suggest it. I’d be tempted to remind her of this.

Totally agree. Covid made so many people skip medical school entirely and just position themselves as medical experts. There is no requirement to test. If your DD is well enough to be in school, in to school she goes.

Some people will NEVER be over Covid though and I'm sure the "selfish" word will be on this thread plenty.

Teacher info is out of date

Oh and in reply to "Teacher asked me why not" I would have been tempted to answer "that's none of your business". As it's not.
