Vegan Christmas Advert: Cinema

InAMess2023 · 11/12/2023 13:53

Had a lovely festive day out with the girls yesterday and went to see Love Actually (20 year re-release). Settled down to watch a film and an advert came on... it's a cartoon turkey (voiced by Jane Horrocks) looking at all the Christmas traditions and singing a jolly Christmas carol... no idea what the ad is for...

All of the sudden the turkey (still singing) is grabbed and thrown in a van...we then see the full journey of it being hung up by the neck, electrocuted, and the screen goes black just as it's killed. The caption? 'Kill tradition this Christmas. Not a Turkey - go vegan this Christmas' - it's an ad for PETA.

Now I have absolutely no problem with vegans, can understand the reasoning around it, etc. but I don't have a desire to be vegan. Probably am a bit hypocritical as I am an absolute animal lover but yes I do eat meat (although not a ton of it).

Just feel like the ad was really inappropriate for the cinema and especially what is meant to be a festive feel-good film! Do I complain to the Cinema Advertising Associates/ASA?

YABU it's an important issue and you shouldn't complain
YANBU totally inappropriate - make a complaint

We have the right not to be confronted with people questioning your perfectly valid and legal choices in daily life though. In most places you can walk away or turn off if someone does that, but you can't at the cinema.*

It’s an advert, it’s allowed. They have a right to advertise. You can leave the cinema for a few minutes if it bothers you. Or just ignore it.

Yeah, like that is realistic.

Just a heads up on your nut roast roast op. There's a reason mmm bacon is a classic.

InAMess2023 · 12/12/2023 13:38

@MarthaMayWho oh don't worry I will 👍🏼 hope your nut roast doesn't give you constipations. And people wonder why vegans get short shrift 🙄

She's not a vegan

InAMess2023 · 12/12/2023 13:50

Only further perpetuating the idea that vegans can't take a joke. Well done guys! 👏🏼

I'm not a vegan either

I think that it's possibly a bit more uncomfortable for the millions of turkeys and other animals who are currently being slaughtered in anticipation of the big day.

So what? Humans are omnivorous and kill and eat other animals, as do many other animals. It's just not something that bothers me at all.

People don't like to be reminded of the consequences of their lifestyle choices. Doesn't mean they shouldn't be. You don't live in a vacuum. A lot of what you do, buy and consume has an impact on other people, animals and the environment.

Says the person who can’t cope with an advert. 🤣

MarthaMayWho · 12/12/2023 13:52

Is it that vegans can't take a joke or you can't make one.
For future reference beans and wind also a good vegan burn.

CorylusAgain · 12/12/2023 13:53

If something is designed to elicit an emotional response, it's not 'your own projection' to then feel that emotional response
The projection I was referring to @LadyBird1973 was the OP's insistence that the advert was berating her, guilt tripping her, telling her she was an awful person etc etc.

The ad did none of that!

It simply reminded people that eating meat necessitates killing animals. It was graphic, it wasn't confrontational it was factual. It was designed to make people think about the connection between the animal and the food. Guilt etc can only arise if you feel guilty about eating meat. If you don't feel guilty this advert won't illicit guilty feelings.

The vehemence with which op defends her position reminds me of Shakespeare "The lady doth protest too much, methinks"

How many carnivores does it take to change a light bulb?
None. They prefer to stay in the dark.

ba dum tss...

Oh that's quite droll hehe.

Perhaps vegans would also like to be reminded of their lifestyle choices. Adverts with crying children in South America whose families can no longer afford to provide them with staple foods as the price has gone up so much due to such a massive market created by veganism in the West. But PETA members probably care more about turkeys anyway.

Of course I eat vegetables and pulses too but it's not all clear cut that veganism is the most ethical choice in all respects.

WTF has that got to do with anything?

I'm not saying I 'can't cope' - believe me I'm aware there are much worse things going on in the world than how animals are killed for meat. I guess just a couple of hours pure leisure time was too much to ask. I don't feel guilty in the slightest, just think there is an appropriate time and a place and that's not it.

No-one said that. It's good for everybody to be educated about the consequences of their lifestyle choices.

For someone who doesn't care what vegans think, have time to discuss the intricacies of strangers views and is so vehemently against having other people views shoved down their throat, the op sure spent a long time ranting about it and pushing their views on everybody else.

What views? The only view I've expressed is that it's not an appropriate place or time for an advert. That's it. I don't give a flying fuck if people want to be vegetarian, vegan, hell even breatharian if they want to be but I expect that in turn they will respect the fact that I like to eat meat.

Most soya goes on animal feed, as to the majority of most crops people try and pass off as purely vegan sins.

But I'm happy for someone to debate my choices. I own my decisions.

MarthaMayWho · 12/12/2023 14:03

No one is going to respect a choice they don't agree with.
It is tolerance you are asking for and you are well tolerated in society, being part of the mainstream.

Look at you playing the victim.
Clue. Victim is the dead one on your plate

It was a joke - can't carnivores take jokes?

You can't pick and choose when it comes to advertising. I'd be very happy to have none at all as I find it very annoying, intrusive and manipulative, and often despair to see the effect it has on the general public - introducing 'needs' where there weren't any etc.

Most of us live a very privileged life from a global perspective and at the expense of others, and I think it a very good thing to be reminded of it.

CorylusAgain · 12/12/2023 14:06

You are entirely free to eat meat

The peta cartoon suggested an alternative. It didn't advocate electrocuting meat eaters you know.

I actually agree with you on this one. I find adverts of all types annoying and especially fuelling consumer culture...one reason why I only watch TV on catchup

And I'd still buy meat whether it was advertised or not.

Yes, that is one view you've shared, you've also made it abundantly clear you have a real issue with vegans / veganism in general and made comments about advertising and consumerism

Who hasn't respected the fact that you like to eat meat? You can eat what you want, cinema's can show whatever adverts they want, organisations can make ad campaigns about what they want. But if you don't want to read other people's opinions on a subject maybe don't start a thread on a public forum about it?

Lemonyyy · 12/12/2023 14:38

swuahies · 11/12/2023 14:32

I wouldn't like this before the cinema either at all.....and not because I'm offended at the killing of a turkey. As a meat eater I'm well aware of where my meat comes from, how it is killed etc, and I still choose to eat it....that's my choice. The part that offends me is the shoving of other people's views down my throat.
That's what actually really annoys me about (a lot of) vegans....they can't just be vegans and get on with their own vegan lives, they've got to take every opportunity to lecture, preach and guilt-trip all non-vegans. Do they really think people will watch that ad and see it as the final straw that convinces them to convert?

And it's not just a certain type of vegan that annoys me, it's any member of society with strong views on lifestyle choices/religion etc that feel they are superior and need to spend their lives trying to convince others that their views/choices are best.

I actually just watched the ad in the link and I actually think the whole things is very "bah humbug" - what's wrong with kids sending a letter to a "man with a beard"? what's wrong with young children believing in elves? What's wrong with 2 consenting adults deciding to kiss under mistletoe?

Lol the only people I've ever heard complaining about what other people eat are omnivores with a bee in their bonnet about "pushy vegans"
