To enjoy watching Love Actually

Just watched Love Actually for the umpteenth time. Thoroughly enjoyed it as usual and got me in the festive spirit.

Yes, the plot(s) is full of holes and mostly ridiculous! However, there are some great moments such as the Emma Thompson scene when she gets the CD instead of the necklace and lots of funny moments (Rowen Atkinson, Bill Nighy etc). My teen DD watching for the first time pointed out the sexism and the fat shaming (but still quite enjoyed it). She's not wrong, but meh! AIBU?

Dated, after all there is a vaguely competent Prime Minister as a character.

ItAintGonnaGoDownEasyIfItAintCheezy · 10/12/2023 17:52

Love it but keira knightly ruins the fuck out of it. Would be so much better if they'd picked a different actress.

Ibizabar · 10/12/2023 17:52

I love it. I do have a thing for Hugh Grant though.

windysocks · 10/12/2023 17:55

Watched it for the 1st time the other day. Why are people so bothered about fat shaming? That's the least of this film's problems! What about the endless sex body double scenes urghh! Not exactly in the Christmas spirit. And the annoying lad who goes off to the states going on about sex all the time - I'm no Mary Whitehouse but I thought it was awful!

Fat-shaming, misogyny, stalking, depicting women as the preferably non-speaking prize for ghastly men, presenting America as full of drawling sirens only too happy to collectively seduce a repulsive twit brfore he’s put down his rucksack etc etc weren’t just dandy in 2003 either.

Love Avtually was as crass and muddle-headed when it first came out.

And even in 2003, writers didn’t sit in their gardens on breezy days typing out their MS on manual typewriters, with the only copy of the book piled under a stone on the table beside them. It’s pretty much like depicting someone using a quill and ink.

Yep, and I remember the totally crass line about 9/11 getting a lot of flak at the time.

When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love.

So exploitative.

the80sweregreat · 10/12/2023 18:00

I much prefer Notting Hill and I can see why people don't like it, but it's just one of those silly films that has some funny scenes , especially when Bill Nighy calls Ant n Dec ' ant or Dec '
His love in with his manager is sweet

CorylusAgain · 10/12/2023 18:01

I wasn't a fan when I saw it on the big screen in 2003 and it hasn't improved with age.
There are characters and scenes I quite liked but it's creepy in places and the opening voice over is appalling.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 10/12/2023 18:05

Somehow I've managed never to watch it... I've read plenty of things about it that have made me not regret that though!

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 10/12/2023 18:05

@the80sweregreat the only scenes I actually enjoy are the Bill Nighy ones. I still remember our glee when it was put on during a school trip coach journey and he started that huge stream of swear words. The teachers were all doing a thousand yard stare….

Yeah, I watched it once, on TV not that long after it came out and thought it was weird and shit then (except for Emma Thompson obviously). It’s not just ‘of its time’.

the80sweregreat · 10/12/2023 18:08

Ds 2 went on a coach school trip somewhere in year 10 I think it was and the driver put on ' Bridesmaids' ( which is a truly dreadful film)
The teachers turned it off apparently !

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 10/12/2023 18:12

This was the same trip for me (re your DS, well done assertive teachers) where the bus driver kept putting on Rihanna’s Rudeboy. We were absolutely POSL at our teachers having to listen to really loud “come on rude boy boy can you get it up” for five days and keep straight faces in front of forty teenagers.

RabbitsRock · 10/12/2023 18:14

We watch it every year, usually on Christmas Eve. Never tire of it.

HairdryerMary · 10/12/2023 18:23

@ClaireEclair I disagree with you about the brother and sister storyline. I worked in a mental health unit and there were many people with schizophrenia who had family members who really made it there job to be there whenever they answered the phone. She probably feels additional pressure as I think they mention that their parents are dead. There are many young carers all over the country who live sort of half lives, not really able to let their hair down, feeling tied down by their own responsibilities but then feeling guilty about feeling that way. It's not just about the shag. She knows that it won't go anywhere as she's so tied up with her brothers care.

I agree. It would be hard to carry on being turned on knowing your disabled Brother was distressed.

I can't get upset about the film.

I enjoy it.

LadyBird1973 · 10/12/2023 18:28

I like it and don't think Richard Curtis should have apologised for it.
Women who are smaller than a size 12, often do think women who are bigger than them are fat. Clearly MM isn't, it's just reflecting how people can be irl.

Colin is a piss take of British men, who have heard that American women like British accents. As if he'd ever stand a chance with any of those women.

The porn actors are funny - it's the idea that love can find you in the weirdest of circumstances!

Laura Linney's story is that family is important, more important than some bloke who can't even be arsed to find out her story and wait for her.

Emma Thompson - massively annoying irl but a cracking actress. That present scene is amazing.

Andrew Lincoln can't help that he loves his friend's wife. He's not a stalker - that would be following her home from work and making a pest of himself. He tells her how he feels, she's clearly flattered. They both move on.

The only one I'm not keen on is Liam Neeson, getting over his poor wife's death in 5 minutes flat and eyeing up Claudia Schiffer.

I feel quite queasy with the food poisoning scene but I thought the rest was funny.

bartbert235 · 10/12/2023 18:34

I always think the "fat shaming" is supposed to be a joke. Some people call her fat when she obviously isn't t.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 10/12/2023 18:35

Agree that the scene where Emma Thompson gets the cd and goes to bedroom to cry/get it together is gut-wrenching. Gets me every time. She's a brilliant actor.

the80sweregreat · 10/12/2023 18:38

It was Martine's horrible ex who called her fat. The assistant isn't that complementary about her , but she doesn't call her fat. ( it has been a while since I saw it though!)
I love that Hugh grant offers to ring the SAS to deal with her ex ' lovely chaps a mere phone call away !'

SheIsStuck23 · 10/12/2023 18:42

I love watching it!!!

I love the scene between Colin Firth and the Portuguese waitress in the restaurant where they have both learnt to speak each other’s languages. So romantic ❤️

Heronwatcher · 10/12/2023 18:46

I totally love it- the singing bodyguard, the airport reunions, Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, the very sad story with Sarah and her disabled brother, Colin Firth in the lake trying to find the book
with the housekeeper, “oh god she’s in” “this had better be good” “it’s actually really shit”, “it’s my favourite part of the day driving you home”, “it’s the saddest part of my day leaving you”. Funny then tragic the next minute. Some bits are problematic yes but what it shows beautifully is the different sides of people, fallibility, different types of love and London at its best.

I love that scene!!!

His is probably my favourite storyline in the film.

I love Love Actually and watch it every year. I do get that times are different now.

Watched Home Alone this arvo though after many years and was quite frankly horrified at the parental emotional abuse and general family bullying of Kevin…..
