To think that Wonka was unnecessarily sexual for a kids film?

Just seen Wonka with my son snd really enjoyed it, (loved High Grant as an Oompa Loompa, even though I usually don’t like him, he was perfect!!) . . . but I was wondering why they needed to shoehorn some weirdly sexual stuff into a kids film?

I’m talking about why they had to make the other chocolatiers so demonstratively sexual (dancing with fans up their arses/crowbarring in homosexuality etc) instead of just making them wonderfully evil, (which is quite possible to do), and why all that nonsense with the couple running the workhouse getting all steamy, and him in shorts and close ups of him bending over etc? The original film had nothing on a sexual level unless I missed it, and I can’t see why it was needed here, my son didn’t find it funny, just “cringe” and he hated the bit where they kissed at the end. What was it for? I thought it kind of spoiled the film. I used to be very open minded, have I just become a massive prude in my (relatively) old age?!!

Not always. They are films which contain nothing overtly offensive or scary. Like Groundhog Day or DrivIng Miss Daisy.

I thought it was fun (I would have preferred it being more like the book and slightly more dark). Hugh Grant was good.

@Bambooshoot you were seeing things that weren’t there which is telling in itself!

Was there a prequel book to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?

Im still slightly traumatised by watching Call Me By Your Name (with same Timothee) with dd - who said it was her favourite film ever.

I was disturbed when dd1 said the same, but I gather it was a bit of a hit in Gen Z.

I found it nauseating from two perspectives - older male grooms gay teenager who looks like a child to me (Chamalet), plus obviously the peach thing. 🤮

I don't think we as mothers and women should be bullied into silence by the male gay community, who can be every bit as patriarchal and chauvinistic (or more) as hetero men at times.

No. There is one afterwards - Charlie’s and the Great Glass Elevator. The prequel / Wonka film is entirely imagined. And lovely it is too.

Thats what I thought, I was confused by PPs wanting it to be more like the book when there wasn't as far as I knew a book.

I have seen SO many people here and on other social media sites saying they preferred Gene Wilders film, and saying it wasn’t like the book etc - well it wasn’t meant to be! 🤷‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ People just seem to live under a rock and don’t read about things properly. If you’re remotely interested in seeing it you’d think you’d find out what it was about!

CatMadam · 10/12/2023 19:38

‘crowbarring in homosexuality’

what on earth are you talking about

Redlarge · 10/12/2023 19:48

Bambooshoot · 10/12/2023 15:57

Maybe it is just me, but they didn’t need to be so sleazy - it was like the film was saying only bad guys are gay! Their sexuality should have been utterly irrelevant to their role as baddies, it didn’t need to be part of the “evil” character.

Its just you.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 10/12/2023 19:49

So you failed in your parental responsibility and are grumpy now? I mean it’s right there in the rating, some content may not be suitable for children. Did you look it up beforehand to see what earned it that rating?

It’s so tiresome that pearl clutchers expect the world to parent their children.

Redlarge · 10/12/2023 19:52

I loved it so did the kids. Gave a bit of old school magic. I liberally cant think of anything negative about it x

So much homosexuality crowbarred into that film 😂I want to see Wonka just for the arse fans now!

similarminimer · 10/12/2023 20:10

I've seen it and the sexuality of the 3 baddies was not apparent to me. I think you may have a rather overlheated imagination

They had earen sweets which turned life onto a broadway musical - hence the jazz hand dancing.

They mean the imagined prequel should be more like the theme of Charlie, darker. It's been "Paddington-ified" with Paul King at the helm. Still looks glorious though, especially Hugh Grant.

Wonka, review: the most fun you’ll have in a cinema all year

The brains behind Paddington – plus a charming Timothée Chalamet – give Dahl a Goon Show-ish prequel full of irresistible velvety sweetness

Well I was curious so asked my 13 year old DS who we watched Wonka with last night if there were any gay characters in it. He said "no, well maybe, how would I know cos no one had sex?"

Verite1 · 10/12/2023 20:16

WTF. I have just seen the film and I don’t know what you are talking about. Your barely disguised homophobia on the other hand …

GirrlCrush · 10/12/2023 20:19

Why do films have to be 'for children' ?

Can't it just be a film for everyone?

Especially what Chalamet does with a piece of fruit (if my memory serves). Op would pass out if she saw that.

Yes, I wondered about that. And exactly the same thing - the gen z person I attended that film with loved it.

I don't feel comfortable watching films that portray teenage sexuality made by older people - it feels voyeuristic. I don't want to watch teenagers making love (just saying it makes me feel a bit odd). I feel the same way about films about female teachers who go with their underage students - there were a few films/tv series that hinted at this and I find them a bit weird.

I was hoping for a fun visual feast before Xmas... It's not too miserable is it??

Ramalangadingdong · 10/12/2023 20:39

Maybe they'll get that Call Me By Your Name director to do an adaptation of James and the giant Peach.

It’s joyful. Not miserable at all.

Queucumber · 10/12/2023 20:43

What a weird thread. Lots of barely veiled homophobia and people who haven’t paid attention to the films they’ve watched.

How can you watch Frozen and not get that Elsa thinks she’s a monster and is afraid of her power? Who hasn’t noticed that Wonka is a prequel and/or thinks that there was already a prequel? Why do homosexuals only get crowbars? Why not a wrench or a lump hammer?

It's an absolute joy and a real treat for the eyes (I adored the balloon scene!). Ignore the frankly bizarre take on this thread and go see it.
