To be livid with friend ?

VioletSkies12 · 10/12/2023 09:54

Bought a new microwave just a few months ago. Friend is staying over and put a plastic dish in for one minute and a flame rose up and she shouted for help . When I looked the microwave now has burn marks and the whole kitchen stinks . Aibu to be furious? We only just bought it

I think you need to be livid with the microwave manufacturers/ salespeople, not with your friend. Putting a plastic bowl in a microwave would not usually have this effect.

GooseClues · 10/12/2023 14:06

Was the plate really just plastic? Even not microwave safe plastic just melts, not catches fire after a minute….
I assume your friend didn’t bring this plate with her and it is actually yours. Have you put it in the microwave before ?
Most likely the microwave was faulty and caught fire and your friend just happened to be the unlucky user at the time.

ApolloandDaphne · 10/12/2023 14:07

Why are you livid with your friend? It was clearly and accident and not something she could have foreseen.

CurlewKate · 10/12/2023 14:08

What's the rest of the story?

TinkerTiger · 10/12/2023 14:20

I put plastic in the microwave all the time and for longer than a minute and it's never done this, perhaps your microwave is faulty?

Cosmosforbreakfast · 10/12/2023 14:23

Sounds like your microwave is faulty. You need to bring it back where you got it and look for a replacement or refund. No idea why you're livid with your friend, your faulty microwave could have seriously injured her.

How was she supposed to know that a plastic dish was going to catch fire in your microwave, though? Plastic is usually microwave-safe. She didn’t do it on purpose. It’s just one of those things. Being ‘livid’ with her is a bit extreme.

This. And how expensive was this microwave to make you so furious anyway?

tachycardigan · 10/12/2023 14:39

Most plastic is fine for the microwave so she wouldn’t known. Was it melamine or did it have a metallic painted rim? I’ve had some close calls with putting those in a microwave.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 10/12/2023 14:40

Unless she laughed and said "hahah I tried to set your house on fire" I think furious is a bit over the top.

It was obviously an accident.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 10/12/2023 14:51

Most plastic is micro safe and even if it wasn't it would melt not catch fire in one minute
I would take it back as it's still under a guarantee
YABU I would be relieved she wasn't hurt

OftIwandered · 10/12/2023 15:05

I hope your friend is OK, she must have got a fright.

Was there anything to indicate this dish wouldn't be safe in the microwave? Or do you think the microwave itself is faulty? If the machine is fine, hopefully it will clean and the smell will clear quite quickly with opened windows.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 10/12/2023 15:09

A complete over reaction to what was an accident. Your poor friend.

momager1 · 10/12/2023 15:20

was it melamine? they are not microwave safe but honestly, most would assume as plastic that they were safe.

Blueblell · 10/12/2023 15:22

Surely not her fault unless she put metal in it

DewHopper · 10/12/2023 15:22

Sounds like a faulty microwave to me.

squeekychicken · 10/12/2023 15:30

I wouldn't be livid. It be pleased it didn't blow up or burn the house down or injure someone. Unless she put something in it that shouldn't have been in it then sounds like a faulty microwave.

Sparklyhat · 10/12/2023 15:47

Livid with your friend? Why is it her fault? It's YOUR microwave

Fairylightgirl · 10/12/2023 15:53

Sounds like an accident and a dodgy microwave.

To be livid seems extreme and hot headed. YABU

Your poor friend.

MumblesParty · 10/12/2023 15:55

I put plastic in the microwave all the time. I thought it was just metal and melamine you can’t put in.

SwooningCamille · 10/12/2023 15:55

It was an accident. One of my DC and her friends set fire to our microwave after a night out. It still works. I wasn't livid - mostly just relieved that the house didn't burn down.

endofthelinefinally · 10/12/2023 15:57

I think she has done you a favour by finding out the microwave is faulty.

Cosywintertime · 10/12/2023 16:00

Wow op, you handle errors well. Most plastic is microwaveable, so she’d not have expected this, but you do you.

SerendipityJane · 10/12/2023 16:13

I wonder if it really is a microwave, or a combined microwave/grill/oven ?

penjil · 10/12/2023 16:13

Op, can you come back and tell us some more?

If you valued your friend you shouldn't let a small thing like this ruin it!

Just be glad your friend is OK.

Beautiful3 · 10/12/2023 16:38

If it was plastic, it should have been fine. However did she accidentally turn on the cooker element? I did that once! It was just an accident. The smell will go, contact the microwave company, they may exchange it for a new one.
