My puppy goes to sleep like that.

snorris · 14/03/2008 13:41

I must have been a really horrible child! I read most of those books and never got upset at any of them . Maybe it was because I knew it was all fiction.
Nowadays it's a different matter though .

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 14/03/2008 13:44

We have real life Chicken Licken - when your 6yo DD comes in with a headless chicken and casually announces "the fox has been again" then lip-trembling at Charlottes Web ain't gonna happen.

RosaIsRed · 14/03/2008 13:47

I sobbed out loud when I was reading DD1 the bit in Little House on the Prairie where Jack the faithful old dog dies. She looked at me as if I had come from distant galaxy and said 'Why are you crying?' 'Because it is so sad, darling.' 'But he was an old dog, Mummy.'
(Incidentally, in the TV series they made Jack COMPLETELY the wrong breed. He was a bulldog.)

Octothechildherder · 14/03/2008 13:52

Ah - she may have met her maker in my bathroom yesterday, but I fear it may have been the giant spider out of Harry Potter as the corpse wouldn't go down the plughole

RIP Charlotte

Finbar · 14/03/2008 14:03

HAs anyone read Fairy Dreams by Gwyneth Rees? - it looks al girly adn lovley on teh cover..and indeed it is ac racking story about believing in fiaries....but then you realise that 'going to fairyland' is a euphemism for dying, which the girl's grandmother then does. The girls get to have tea with her Grandmother one alst time ..and that's where I lost it!

It's beautifully done - but OMG it should have a health warning for parents on it. (DD totally unmoved I might add!)

ProfessorGrammaticus · 14/03/2008 14:10

Has anyone else read The Crow Scarer? Think either Michael morpurgo or Dick King Smith

LarryVeest · 14/03/2008 14:24

I cried at the end of Charlotte's Web because just when I thought I'd reached a nice safe arachnid-free conclusion, thousands of her babies come swarming out! Aaaaagh!!

VictorianSqualor · 14/03/2008 16:44

I cant;t find the horse one anywhere

I've never read Charlotte's Web - but have always wanted to (be strong cs).
I am heartbroken about Mog though!!!
I cried buckets when Aslan died when I was a youngster too.

stleger · 14/03/2008 17:04

I saw it on stage - and I didn't know she died! Dd1 didn't warn me.

RosaIsRed · 14/03/2008 17:17

The horse one is the goose girl by the Brothers Grimm.

Hulababy · 14/03/2008 17:20

Yes, DD cried BUT we kept reading and the babies made her cheery again.

VictorianSqualor · 14/03/2008 17:21

YES!
Thankyou Rosa¬!

pelafina can you do the 18th? Lunchtime ish?

Mouselady · 14/03/2008 17:28

OMG Mog is dead? You've just ruined my weekend.
Although not a book - did anyone ever see the Rugrats episode where we find out what happened to Chuckie's Mum? I realise I am going back a long time.
All the kids sat there deadpan. All the grown ups were absolutely in pieces. Still can't watch it now.

lovecat · 14/03/2008 17:38

Please, whatever you do, don't read any of Oscar Wilde's fairytales, then!

The Selfish Giant and The Happy Prince especially have me sobbing like a baby... oh God, I'm welling up now at the thought of the little crippled boy left in the garden at the end who turns out to be Jesus come to take him to heaven.... waaaah!!!

I too sobbed - uncontrollably - when Mog died. I'd bought the book as an Xmas present for my stepdaughter too, and read it to her unawares (like, you don't think you'd need to check inside a Mog book FFS for "upsetting" content do you ?)

But spiders ..... pah. One less of the revolting things IMO. Good riddance !!
