I remember my 6yr old son being unconsolable after seeing Charlotte's web the cartoon. I do think it's allowable though to cry at sad bits in stories. I always wept a little when reading The Little Match Girl. At least Charlotte's babies live on. The Little Match Girl dies for nothing and unloved.

< goes off sobbing >

And I was all choked up when Matthew died in Anne of Green Gables too.

ahundredtimes · 14/03/2008 13:06

DS2 cried and cried when he read The Little Matchgirl - I was quite surprised in a way.

But THE CRYING IS GOOD.

I am going to work my way through the library of crying literature. My children will be well-adjusted won't they?

Heifer · 14/03/2008 13:07

will be good for your DS to see some emotion from you Cod

nothing wrong with crying and talking about death. DD sees me cry sometimes and ask if I am sad about missing my mum and dad or our dog!

tis all healthy. and oyu have saved me a few pounds as won't have to buy that book now I know the ending...

Do you want to join our book club (not)

VictorianSqualor · 14/03/2008 13:07

Homeward Bound always got me too (the film though) when I thought the old dog wasn't coming back.

My two weren't bothered about Aslan yet I cried even though I knew he was going to come back to life.

jennykb · 14/03/2008 13:07

My 5yr old dd sobbed for 2 hours. Don't finish it at bedtime!

ahundredtimes · 14/03/2008 13:08

DD and i cried when we saw Bridge to Terebithia. The ds's came out and said they thought there should have been more 'action fighting'.

Ringworm · 14/03/2008 13:09

My mum glued in a whole alternative ending to our Ladybird Chicken Licken story -- one where the fox wasn't quick enough to eat the chicken.

Someone I know always switches off The Sound of Music just after the singing competition, so their DCs don't have to watch the scary bits where they're hiding from the soldiers.

TheHonEnid · 14/03/2008 13:10

i only do old books

DS watched a film of this at school. Apparently he was sobbing and had to be comforted by the other children. We haven't tackled the book. He was unable to read about the death of Ma in The Sheep Pig by himself as well. He needed me in the room...

TheHonEnid · 14/03/2008 13:12

VanillaPumpkin · 14/03/2008 13:18

But it is OK in the end. It is a story about life. You will be ok .
I have to confess I sobbed during the film when she died. The dd's were sad but not crying. But there is a lift at the end.

VanillaPumpkin · 14/03/2008 13:19

I loved all the Dick King-Smith books as a child.

VictorianSqualor · 14/03/2008 13:20

I had a ladybird book about a horse whose head is put above a bridge or something.
It was awfully sad and even know at 27 I still get full of sadness when I think of it.

OrmIrian · 14/03/2008 13:21

Eh? was the horse dead when they did that vs?

JackieNo · 14/03/2008 13:21

That rings a bell - Fallala or something?
