To ask if you would pay this ?

SIL needs someone to come to the house to take her DD to nursery as her and brother both have times where their shifts are earlies. She found someone through one of the childcare sites who is looking for adhoc work to fit around other jobs, qualified, very experienced and an older sitter at age 39 and we were all pleased for her as we knew it was a big ask. Now she’s saying that she feels paying out £15 for the lady to do this is too expensive and has effectively ghosted this lady who was keen to help. Aibu to say she won’t get any better offer? To be clear she only needs adhoc help not permanent so a childminder won’t work and nursery obviously won’t open earlier for her.

We pay that for our nanny, seems a reasonable amount to me

Waitingfordoggo · 08/12/2023 14:38

Wow, YANBU, your SIL won’t find a better offer I wouldn’t have thought.

EricInk · 08/12/2023 14:39

I pay £30 for a babysitter to do the same

Ellie1015 · 08/12/2023 14:39

I think someone willing to come to house for breakfast/school run on an adhoc basis are very limited.

Ohthatsfabulousdarling · 08/12/2023 14:41

A taxi would cost more, and not be as good with the kids.

CaineRaine · 08/12/2023 14:46

How long will the person be working for?

ThinWomansBrain · 08/12/2023 14:50

whether she wants to use the service or not, extremely childish (and shortsighted) to ghost her.
What did she expect to pay?

TokyoSushi · 08/12/2023 14:52

Just a set fee of £15? It's a lot of hassle for the sitter for £15, if it's just a flat fee then I'd say it's a bargain!

SutWytTi · 08/12/2023 14:55

I think she will struggle to find a better offer.

LakeTiticaca · 08/12/2023 14:55

Is it 15 quid just for one drop off?
If its on an adhoc basis it seems quite reasonable.

She needs somebody safe and reliable to do it. It's her kids, not a bag of groceries

VioletSkies12 · 08/12/2023 14:57

Yes just for the set hour which is a bargain in my eyes but I also agree that she shouldn’t ghost the woman. We have employed sitters and nannies for our DD and I wouldn’t ever do that .
I think she’s expecting a childminder will agree to do it adhoc for £6 or something. She’s unlikely now to get a better offer so more fool her.

Cosywintertime · 08/12/2023 14:59

Wow that’s so rude, why didn’t she just say no thank you, 😱

Jinglingallthewaytochristmas · 08/12/2023 15:01

£15 seems really cheap to me.

PossumintheHouse · 08/12/2023 15:01

When your sister goes crawling back after her bad behaviour, she can expect an increased fee of £20 an hour.
Very short-sighted of her and so immature to ghost instead of saying thanks, but no thanks.

ThePoshUns · 08/12/2023 15:02

I'd say that's cheap. Don't think she will find anything cheaper for a bespoke service

Workawayxx · 08/12/2023 15:16

£15 is really cheap for a nanny for an hour (presumably very early!) including a drive to nursery. Before/after school club cost £15 each when my older DC was at primary. She also needs to be polite and at least reply and say no thank you.

Waitingfordoggo · 08/12/2023 15:20

I think she’s expecting a childminder will agree to do it adhoc for £6 or something.

That’s so naïve! The chances of a childminder having a space just for an adhoc school run are zero. If a childminder had such a space, she’d fill it with a child who needed the drop off on a daily basis (or at least pretty frequently!).

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 08/12/2023 15:20

We pay £12 per hour for our afterschool care, 2 hours a day including a school pick up but that's prearranged and an absolute bargain. Yes I would pay £15 per hour on an adhoc basis

Cosywintertime · 08/12/2023 15:28

To have someone reliable on call, who can take your kid as and when required, for 15 quid is a steal. To expect someone to get in their car, come get her, as and when, for 6 quid is appalling, and then to be so rude as to ghost the woman who offered, is frightful behaviour,

Invisimamma · 08/12/2023 15:56

This kind of childcare is near impossible to find. That's a bargain!

Butchyrestingface · 08/12/2023 16:02

Your SIL sounds horrible. Her next victim should factor that in and apply an arsehole tax on top of the £15. 😠

GreatGateauxsby · 08/12/2023 16:03

Under NO circumstances help them with the inevitable "emergency childcare".
Your SIL has manufactured any and all emergencies through her own idiocy.

£15ph and ad-hoc flexibility AND experienced For someone who is willing to come to your home to provide childcare...

Your SIL is crazy and has well and truly looked a gift horse in the mouth.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 08/12/2023 16:11

I'd say that's very cheap. The woman must live very close to offer that price. What was SIL expecting to pay?

VioletSkies12 · 08/12/2023 16:34

She was hoping a local childminder would want to do it which is ridiculous as it’s only adhoc work so of course that’s not an option.
She keeps saying she doesn’t want to pay £15 “just for the hour “. Ridiculous.

Your SIL is in for a shock. I pay more than that for a taxi.
