To embrace the grey at 37?

CherryGarcia23 · 08/12/2023 11:39

So I'm going grey. I'd say looking at my parting only, I'm at 25%.

I haven't dyed my hair since February this year. I'm considering going to a professional hairdresser to start dying a silvery grey to blend everything in.

I do not like the mousey brown / blonde/ grey that seems to be to go to in your 40's / 50's when a haiirdresser does a professional cover up.

AIBU to do this at 37? Everyone I have spoken to says wait until 50's??

I always think of Helen Mirren as being platinum blonde

How you think of her is a bit irrelevant. She’s grey.

There are quite a few women who were forced by COVID into 'embracing the grey' at my work. They all look older. I think pp is right, if you have the right skin tone then fine but if you're a pale English rose then you will look dead.

So ‘looking older’ is a negative?
And no, you won’t look ‘dead’, what with all the moving and talking and breathing.

Calm down.

She may be grey but it's a grey that requires a lot of time sitting in the hairdressers. So not exactly au naturale.

Justfinking · 08/12/2023 22:18

I would love if more people started doing this. I notice men don't seem to bother anymore and hope it catches on with women too!

Helen Mirren has clearly had a facelift - so not exactly embracing aging is she? Funny how certain cosmetic procedures are acceptable, but if you dye your hair you're somehow letting the sisterhood down.

Not quite sure where you got that from.
Dye your hair if you want. Have facelifts, Botox, fillers if you want.
I’m not invoking sisterhood.
Just saying none of it makes you look younger, and also looking younger shouldn’t be your goal.

There are many ways to look good, it is a matter of personal taste and style.

It is not 'letting yourself go' to have grey hair.

Agree with this. I've seen some very attractive women with grey hair. Unfortunately I do agree with PP that if you look young, it looks better. But then that's probably because grey is seen as old by society so if you look frumpy anyway, it'll just age you

What have I said that’s not calm?
That’s the second time this week someone has posted that to me on here for disagreeing calmly.

Why does young look better? It looks younger, granted. But why d9 you think that’s better?

Mayhemmumma · 08/12/2023 22:22

I did, I'm 39 now with one large silver streak and lots of grey highlights...when my hair is kept short and styled it looks cool, lots of comments on it.

When it's growing out and untamed frizzy it looks awful.

But it's in great condition and it's so freeing not to have to ever dye it. I've dyed it since I was 14 - who for?!

You always get people on these threads saying 'yes, yes, go for it. Embrace the grey, live with the grey, natural grey is brilliant. Do it. Do it. Stop dying it. It's such a FAFF dying it, blah blah blah!'

In real life, there's very, very few women under the age of 50 who have grey hair. I admit hell would freeze over before I would have let the grey show in my hair at 37 ... Not a fucking chance.

In fact, I'm in my mid-late 50s now, and am about 15% grey, (natural colour is dark blonde,) and no fucker ever sees my 'grey' as I dye it. I'm actually very fortunate that going grey at an older age is genetic in my family, and most family members don't even have a grey hair until about 50.. Even my dad was only about 20-25% grey by 65. So there's not much to 'cover.'

I pretty much look my age in my mid-late 50s. There's no way in hell that I'm going to look 10 years older - which I would, if I let the grey show through. As I said, I'm about 15% grey now - at the temples and sort of by the ears.

People often put loads of pictures of women - under 50 - with funky 'trendy' grey haircuts on this type of thread. In reality the majority of women (under 50) don't look great with grey hair and it does make them look older than their age. Under 50 with grey hair is a big no from me. And as I said, IMO it's rather ageing...

.

ArsenicInTheAppleTart · 08/12/2023 22:32

People often put loads of pictures of women - under 50 - with funky 'trendy' grey haircuts on this type of thread.

People also usually post pictures of women with warmer skin tones which contrasts in a really striking way with the grey. The person who posted a picture of her grey hair earlier on in the thread and got lots of complimentary responses (because she look gorgeous) also has a lovely warm skin tone. It can be trickier if you're pale and grey, much higher chance of looking washed out, with the skin blending into the hair. And it's fine not to give a hoot about such things, of course! But if you are someone with a healthy dollop of vanity, getting grey hair to work with pale skin can take a bit more work.

💯 well said. I don't give a shiny shite about the non-existent sisterhood. Like fuck will I be letting my grey go through. NOPE. Not ever!

Thought I had explained that in my post. Society equates grey with old (interestingly I have noticed young mem don't bother now, so it's now just judging women). If you are already old and frumpy looking then grey will tend to age you. If you're youngish looking ie it's obvious you're in your 30s or even 40s and you are attractive, it won't have the same effect. It's unfair, but it's true.

Example, last week I saw a young Indian grandmother at the playground with grey hair who looked absolutely fabulous. She had a great figure, dressed and groomed well and was very attractive. I on the other hand much younger with my non-grey hair, look like I've been run over in my slobby clothes and generally just a mess. If I had grey hair I would easily look 10+ years older than her. I think if you already look good and have a stylish grey haircut you'll still look great. I also think the more women who do this the better as then people will stop equating it with being old which is already happening with men. I see loads of men in their 20s with grey now.

Calmisthemantra · 08/12/2023 22:37

Do it. I've been grey since I was 18 and I'm now 41. I was dyeing it every 3 weeks and feared my roots showing - I grew it out 5 years ago and it's so much better and in better condition.

Sali Hughes pre-grey hair was her natural colour. Not a box dye. It's fine to prefer to grey but the grey is the result of bleaching and toning. It's not natural.

This looks blonde and not grey to me

I didn't mean if you look young, you look better (although that's true, are we really so delusional now we don't think this? I looked far better at 20!). I meant if you look young, then the grey can look great and doesn't necessarily age you

I am 38 and I ve just cut off the last bit of colour. It's been a journey and it was hard. Dealing with everyone and their opinions on why I should colour my hair was a struggle. Now, I'm loving the grey, but some days, I still wonder if I should go back to covering it up. My mum went grey at 21, and honestly, I think grey hair is beautiful.

That’s beautiful, just like you.

I gave in to the grey when I was 43. This is mine.

LeakyPipes · 08/12/2023 22:51

Unless you feel it looks messy as it is I wouldn't bother having a hairdresser blend it. I started going grey in my 30s, and it was an absolute faff (and very expensive) getting it regularly coloured. One of the best decisions I ever made was to just leave the colour be. It's very liberating 👍

That explains nothing. Society equates grey with old - well, maybe. I’ll go along with that.
But why do you think that’s bad.

I'm 45 and stopped dyeing 2 years ago. Am about 25 to 30% grey. Mostly at the front with very little at the back which looks a bit odd. I don't care enough to carry on dyeing it now. Too much cost and aggro since the roots are showing in 2 to 3 weeks anyway. I actually like the grey I just wish it was even!
