To not want MIL to get DS a chocolate egg.

I am always greatful when people buy things for DS. Unfortunately, he had a load of teeth out at the dentist a little while ago and the dentist said no more sweets. We know he's going to get chocolate eggs from friends of ours but we just squirrel them away or DH buys them off him toi let him go toy shopping. My parents said they'd get him some lego and give him a cardboard egg with wee bits in it (like a pencil, a toy, a couple of pounds). DH went to explain to his mum and his brothers about not giving DS choccie eggs. All his brothers were saying 'no problem, we'll get him an action figure or something'. His mother went in a massive huff going on about how this was obviously my doing and how ungrateful we are. I don't expect anyone to spend money on DS. Last year she bought him an egg that cost £6. You could get a couple of power rangers for that.

I always appreciate anything DS gets as does he but he was so upset after getting his teeth out and has been brilliant about cutting out sweets.

No, you're not being unreasonable.
I wish I could say to XP's family not to get the DC's anything for Easter but I have no excuse!

TheAntiFlounce · 14/03/2008 08:34

Send her a close up polaroid of your poor ds's gappy mouth.

I can't eat chocolate and DH is away over the easter weekend. Luckily as I'm working easter Monday, DS will be at my mums so I can avoid her.
LL, I should prompt DS to say things like that to Grandma.

ooh LL your BIL and SIL sound thrilling

EffiePerine · 14/03/2008 08:45

Send it to me

My sis had similar with her kids - her poor DD had to have several teeth removed under GA, but her MIL claimed it was down to her asthma rather than the sweets shovelled in her direction

G - just drop it round my way! (tis PMD)
DS is a smart kid. i bet if you talked to him about it he would say something to MIL.

BumperliciousIsStillNotDressed · 14/03/2008 08:49

Oh God my mum's going to get DD (8mo) an egg isn't she?

YANBU btw! Especially as DS is being so good himself, putting temptation in his way is mean.

Surely sweets are fine as long as the teeth are brushed afterwards? Food as well as sweets can make the teeth bad if they aren't brushed as well as drinks.

Mine have chocolate but not proper sweets, no harm imo as long as teeth are brushed.

nametaken · 14/03/2008 10:44

Exactly Jodie, it's not the sweets thats the problem, it's the tooth brushing (or absence of).

TotalChaos · 14/03/2008 10:45

In the circumstances YANBU. Jodie - possibly gscrym's DS has extra sensitive teeth to decay - low enamel levels or something.

princessosyth · 14/03/2008 10:46

At least it is only 1 egg, we have already asked MIL to only buy him 1 egg and she has point blank refused, last year she bought him 9! .

well, my mil has bought ds a ladybird kit. have no idea what it involves (has not yet arrived) but basically we get to rear all these ladybirds... oh that's lovely you might say. but how many tears are there going to be when it comes time to release them?

Guitargirl · 14/03/2008 10:56

YANBU, my Mum asked if DD (14 months) was going to have chocolate at Easter. I said no so she bought her a pair of shoes instead .

lackaDAISYcal · 14/03/2008 11:02

YANBU. My 5 yo DS gets more than a little hyper with sweets and chocolate so we ration what he has. One year he got about 12 eggs and they actually went past their eat by date and had to be thrown away (they had gluten in or I'd have eaten them ). After that we asked relatives not to buy him eggs, and now he gets a little toy or some money for his holiday fund.

She should respect your wishes though, especially if his teeth are bad.

appledumpling · 14/03/2008 11:12

YANBU. MIL wanted to get DS (aged ll months) an Easter egg. I said no and now I'm the evil mother denying my child chocolate! He has a lifetime ahead of him to eat chocolate and he's not old enough to appreciate an Easter egg anyway.

I've suggested they buy him a small Easter-related toy instead "so that he has a lasting memento of his first Easter" but haven't had a response to that yet!

YANBU, I don't let my DS2 have easter eggs either, I normally buy him a new computer game or book instead which he's far happier with

tori32 · 14/03/2008 13:42

At first glance I thought it was unreasonable, but given the history of rotten teeth YANBU IMO. It would only highlight what he is missing IYSWIM. I think it would be mean for her to give him an egg that would be taken off him.

I suppose if you gave a small piece after a meal and insisted he cleaned his teeth after it would not be too bad, if she did give an Easter egg.

ladygrinningsoul · 14/03/2008 22:00

Playmobil eggs, which have a toy inside and no chocolate? Or last year there were some Matchbox eggs which had cars inside. (Not a sugar fascist, but my DS does not like chocolate).
