Rock out with your cock out

I need some perspective on this. I was in HMV today, and amongst the merchandise, most of which is firmly aimed at children were a selection of mugs saying “fresh out of fucks” and “rock out with your cock out”. These were very much at children’s eye level and I gently pointed this out to a member of staff who just said “ok?”.

I messaged HMV and asked them to consider the positioning of the products in store and they responded saying they believe it’s displayed in a responsible fashion.

I feel like I’m completely out of touch. If I had DS (under 10) with me I would have been very cross to have him reading that among the Minecraft merch. AIBU to think they could have been put out somewhere else in store?

Squishmallows and Marvel appealing to young kids doesn’t mean they are the target market.

They're clearly part of the target market. Marvel PJs at age 4. Squishmallows all over the little kids section in Smyths.

So if HmV are going to stock them, kids will be drawn to them. I'm not even sure why that's something people are disputing, it's pretty obvious 🫠

The only thing ‘pretty obvious’ is that you think your kids interest in something means that they are definitely 100% the target market.

I never said anything remotely like that

Yeah YANBU. Those shouldn't be on public view. And WTF does 'rock out with your cock out' mean anyway? Sounds very juvenile.

FatFatMary · 07/12/2023 15:31

I would be offended having that in my face without kids with me

Vettrianofan · 07/12/2023 15:32

You don't need to take it literally, it's just a slogan. I would just walk on. Have four DC and tbh it would be daft drawing attention to it. There are worse things going on in the world.

Would you houk your bosum and ask to speak to the manager?

Of course its juvenile. It's giving Motley Crue/Van Halen vibes.

Love a clutchy pearl thread me Grin

hmv isn't somewhere I would take little kids anyway. Back in the day or now. If you're ignorant about the place then you're probably not now tbh.

Pearl clutcher? For not wanting foul language in the faces of small children? OK I'll wear that badge on here. And I didn't realise you weren't meant to take young children into HMV. I must have missed that memo. 🙄

Scruffington · 07/12/2023 15:36

It could be argued that 'cock out' is fowl language rather than foul language.

Frequency · 07/12/2023 15:36

And EMP sells Slipknot merch for toddlers. What's your point?

Do you know who pays for a 4yo child's clothing?

Anyone who lets their 4yo watch Marvel MCU needs parenting classes.

Besides which, whether or not M&S sells something has no bearing on the fact that HMV is marketed to teenagers and young adults. Nothing about HMV screams child-friendly.

It's like taking a child into Anne Summers and them complaining when they ask you what a butt plug is.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. However my first thought on reading the OP was “Wow, HMV still have shops?”!

Edited

Hahaha mine too!

TheKeatingFive · 07/12/2023 15:39

Thats not what this is about though. It's about 4 year olds being exposed to and interested in Marvel merch. And if M&S is catering to that at 4, well you have your answer.

They won't be buying the figures in HMV either, but it will attract their attention

TheKeatingFive · 07/12/2023 15:41

It's like taking a child into Anne Summers

What a totally ridiculous comparison.

Anne Summers is a clearly designated adult space. HMV is not.

StoodySmithereens · 07/12/2023 15:49

😆

I believe this is just something that you’re embarrassed about, don’t try & hide behind the kids now you old prude.

WhileMyDishwasherGentlyWeeps · 07/12/2023 16:01

NewtonPulsifer · 06/12/2023 23:49

yanbu. Having this stuff next to kids stuff is sad.

If you can’t stop it, can you “eclipse” if like I do the Scum newspaper by putting other products in front of it?

🙄

Away from the newspaper censorship Flying Squad…

When I was a kid, god knows how many years ago, we used to go to the seaside. Where ‘saucy’ postcards were everywhere. McGill type cards. No children were corrupted

Little kids won’t understand and won’t be interested. Older kids already know and will have a laugh.

OP, I mean it kindly: grow up.

just shows their stupid mentality then dosent it?😩

The danger is with allowing this type of crap in a shop is where do you draw the line, what is acceptable, and who decides what isnt? Then when its reached a certain level where does it go then?

Its like that awful FCUK thing, things just keep going lower and lower all the time. Who wants to see that and explain to kids. Thankfully you dont see it now.

@TheKeatingFive Kids will be attracted to them, just like they will be attracted to the brightly coloured drawings in tattoo shop windows and the pink lights and butterflies in Anne Summer's windows, but as a parent, it is your job to explain that shop is not for them and gently direct to them to Game instead.

HMV does not need to parent your child. It is not a kid's shop.

I would have thought the massive horror and anime displays dotted all over the shop featuring scarcely clothed women and horror characters holding weapons dripping with blood would be more problematic for children to see than the word cock but maybe that's just me.

I thought everyone knew FCUK stood for French Connection UK. It's been around for decades.

TheKeatingFive · 07/12/2023 16:30

Im really not sure why you aren't understanding the difference between Anne Summers and HMV.

Squishmallows are not equivalent to brightly coloured sex toys/lingerie. I honestly can't understand why you need this explained.

For what it's worth, if HMV wanted to specify that they are solely open to teenagers and up and restrict children's access, then fine. But if they aren't going to do that and stock squishmallows and Pokémon merch, then I don't think it's too much to ask to not put this material at child eye level right beside them.
