to think boots should keep tablets at a height out of toddler reach

doublethetrouble · 13/03/2008 22:57

whilst in boots the other day i noticed that my wee girl had a packet of panadols in her hand. We had been no where near the pharmacy section in the shop. The tablets she had picked up was randomly placed at pushchair level in the middle of the shop with other items on promotion. I appreciate mums need to keep an eye on wandering hands but still think that they should be out of reach just in case a mum or dad didnt notice them getting picked up.

They are a chemist!

Do you want them to cellotape everything to the ceiling?

PeachesMcLean · 13/03/2008 23:02

LOL that was what I was thinking but I didn't have the bottle to say it.

Sorry Double.

doublethetrouble · 13/03/2008 23:11

no need for sarcasm thank you. just think they should at very least keep tablets to the pharmaceutical area or if not in that area out of toddler reach.

No!Its up to the parent to keep an eye on the toddler, not for Boots to rearrange its shop! If a toddler is left long enough away from a parent to be able to locate and eat a panadol (having got it out of said packet) then obviously they are not keeping a close enough eye IMO

Tommy · 13/03/2008 23:16

was going to say the same as Tori32 - it is unlikely that your toddler could unwrap and eat a tablet before you would notice

misdee · 13/03/2008 23:18

pretty much what tori said.

totally unreasonable

cory · 13/03/2008 23:18

I have to say I agree with Tori. Assuming that the tablets are in a packet, it would take quite a long time for a toddler to actually access any medicine (holding the packet in her hand won't do her any harm). Surely we are talking quite a few minutes here. I think the pharmacy might reasonably expect parents not to take their eyes off their offspring for that long.

tori32 · 13/03/2008 23:21

Whats happening I seem to have 3 people agreeing with me!

amytheearwaxbanisher · 13/03/2008 23:22

i think yabu its your job to keep your toddler safe not boots, its a chemist

suedonim · 13/03/2008 23:25

A child can grab all sorts of things from shelves in shops, such as shampoo, loo cleaner, scissors, matches, alcohol etc. It's our task as parents to be vigilant.

doublethetrouble · 13/03/2008 23:25

my toddler was in pushchair as i previously said. I do watch my children (toddler and baby) and as also previously said in post i do appreciate it is parents duty to keep eye on kids however i also appreciate that there are parents who dont watch kids as closely and as such a child could be unnecessarily put at risk whilst they decide what bottle of shampoo they buy. Parent at fault yes but not childr and it would be them that end up overdosing in wort case scenario.

alfiesbabe · 13/03/2008 23:25

YABU. Tell your toddler not to pick things up when you're shopping. If she can't manage that, go shopping without her.

suedonim · 13/03/2008 23:29

Those parents who don't bother to watch their children when in Boots I suspect are hardly likely to keep Panadol under lock and key at home either.

doublethetrouble · 13/03/2008 23:43

how old are your children alfiesbabe? My daughter is not a child from hell and Im sure my daughter isnt the only child that has picked things up in a shop before. Childcare whilst shopping is not option for me. This is first time i have started thread and although i appreciate folk can have different opinion from me i feel that comments like ofgs etc and comments somewhat act like i dont look after my children. If someone wants tablets they will go to the pharmacy section for them so dont think they need to be placed anywhere else in shop within reach of kids.

catsmother · 13/03/2008 23:51

Double, if you start a thread in AIBU, there's every chance someone might say "yes" !

I appreciate it must have been a heart-stopping moment to see your daughter with pills in her hand, but logically, there is SO much a toddler, or slightly older (and therefore taller) child could harm themselves with in a chemist that it would be impossible to rearrange everything behind the counter, unless Boots were going to ditch the self service idea altogether and that ain't going to happen !

ladette · 13/03/2008 23:53

Doublethetrouble, I'm well known on MN as a paranoid Mum, so see where you're coming from with this. But sit back and think about this logically: the tablets aren't sat openly on the shelves, with little glasses of water freely available to wash them down. They're either in child-locked containers or boxes containing blister packs. Realistically, a little one isn't going to break into it without your noticing, even if you've turned your back, and if they did, they'd gag before swallowing them.

Scramble · 13/03/2008 23:54

My Dsused to regularly lift the helicopter from ELC, but I would pay more attention in shops like boots etc, I would be more worried about them grabbing stuff like lipstick and making a mess.

If a toddler picks up any object they could wreck it so its only fair you should keep an eye on them so as not to wreck the stock, put child in danger or inadvertantly nick it.

amytheearwaxbanisher · 13/03/2008 23:59

im not saying you dont look after your children i have a toddler who pulls everything off the shelves but i am always watching so he doesnt harm himself or others but if your saying shops should take every precaution so children of careless parents dont get hurt that is unreasonable,in that case we should all drive five miles an hour in case parents dont watch their children near roadshow could someone not notice a toddler taking and opening and swallowing painkillers in a shop?if they could not notice that then shop safety is really the least of the parents worrys

doublethetrouble · 14/03/2008 00:07

It is so much nicer being told im being unreasonable in a logic justified fashion. I can accept yes i probably am a paranoid mummy that doesnt like leaving anything to risk so far as my little ones are concerned. I love them:-). Feel more p'd off that previous posters act like i dont adequately care for my kids than where boots are positioning there tablets now. Folk are quite harsh on here sometimes eh? think im going to change my name and hopefully then if i dares start thread again earlier posters will be nice to me!

amytheearwaxbanisher · 14/03/2008 00:14

i agree people can be a bit quick to cut you down i never start an aibu thread without my thick skin on!

LadyOfWaffle · 14/03/2008 00:18

Woweee, I think they should keep medication higher up, it's not rocket science. YANBU to think that they should. Maybe you should talk to the boots manager? See what they have to say on the matter. Toddlers can be so quick and so crafty - pills aren't like hair dye or whatever with child safty kids, they are very 'sweet like' and tempting for a toddler.

ladette · 14/03/2008 10:30

doublethetrouble, don't change your name. You have friends on this thread who will look out for you! And what you said wasn't bad at all, and said with the best of intentions.

sparklyfairypie · 14/03/2008 10:36

dont change your name - you have now earned some kudos because instead of saying "fuck you all your all bitches" you have realised what everyne was trying to say and understood, but yes it is human nature to be parenoid over kids.

yabu (slightly) but its understandable why.

sparklyfairypie · 14/03/2008 10:39

oh want to add i started off on the anti-MN and its all fluffyness, and its nice but everyones too nice and theres sooooooo much bitching behind peoples back it makes me feel sceptical. But here people say what they think, sometimes thats harsh yes. However if you need advice/support then these ladies come through for fellow MNers

(I got paid £50 ffrom MN for posting this btw)
