To think this is actually a rather nice daily menu for a toddler?

Breakfast - cheerios with milk

Snack - pear

Lunch - tuna, avocado and sweetcorn toasted sandwich

Dinner - homemade chicken curry
pudding - yoghurt

That’s fine surely?!

Are you American by chance? The British version has about 5 times the amount of sugar compared to the American version.

There are worse things though, I let my kids eat them and think as part of a balanced diet they’re absolutely fine!

Yes! In the US Cheerios are a staple for toddlers bc of the low sugar. We do have like 10 different flavored varieties that have a bit more sugar though. I think even those are fine as well.

It’s really strange - maybe she did mean lack of treats or maybe horrified at the cheerios!

He has gone off eggs recently which rules a lot of my ‘breakfast menu’ out. If anyone has any good ideas for breakfasts for toddlers then feel free to share.

Mine quite like Weetabix and Shreddies - they seem very bland to me but both my kids choose them over Cheerios most of the time so those might be worth a try.

Mine also like a bagel and nut butter

It’s a bit light on fruit and veg compared to what mine eats- she has a bit of a veg obsession though, especially raw and she has 2-3 portions fruit daily too. But appreciate not all kids do. DD cried in McDonalds when she had to have chips instead of carrot sticks 🙈😂 sometimes I wonder if they gave me the wrong baby…

But otherwise looks entirely normal to me.

My teenager has always been like this. I had to add lettuce and tomato to her Happy Meal burgers or she wouldn't eat it. It was actually a struggle to get her to eat convenience foods when I was working too many hours to cook. She has always loved just a whole raw vegetable. Her favorite foods are peas and tomatoes. When I asked her what she wanted for Christmas dinner this year she said a salad 😂

Cheerios are absolute junk but otherwise good

saffronsoup · 06/12/2023 07:09

She may not have meant it was unhealthy but more that it is adult food. Is he eating what you are eating or are you making these are separate meals for him?

I think if we were at the park and a parent pulled out a tuna avocado and sweetcorn toasted sandwich for the toddler, there were be a few eyeborws raised. It seems a little hoity toity - however as I said, if he is just eating what you are eating, then why not.

Carbs are not sugar. Sugar is carbs not the other way round. Also sugar in whole fruit and veg is fine - it's refined sugar that's the issue. So the yogurt and the Cheerios are the only sugary things. I think that's better than the average toddler diet. If wanting to do better i'd add a couple more fruit or veg portions.

It's not that it's not fine, it's just some people don't realise that sugar in fruit still adds to the total daily amount of sugar. Your body treats it in the exact same way as a spoonful of processed sugar. If you ate 30 pears, your body would be struggling with processing that amount of sugar.

But again - I think OP's menu is a perfectly fine/ normal western diet for a toddler, and certainly doesn't warrant any 'poor kid' comments.

@WillowCraft Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose (i.e. sugar).

The point I was making is that the cheerios and bread also contain sugars/ will be broken down into sugars when eaten.

This is something that people don't always consider when thinking about how much sugar is in their diet. I know people who eat tons of bread who think they are on a low sugar diet, for example.
