To think this is actually a rather nice daily menu for a toddler?

Breakfast - cheerios with milk

Snack - pear

Lunch - tuna, avocado and sweetcorn toasted sandwich

Dinner - homemade chicken curry
pudding - yoghurt

That’s fine surely?!

Cheerios = ultra processed yuk. Apart from that, fantastic!

Ilovetocookandbake · 05/12/2023 17:41

Ultra processed yuk 🤣

Looks fine to me. As others have said, mine eats at least two or three more snacks through the day but then eats all her dinner plus a piece of fruit and a yoghurt or similar. She eats about twice as much as her six year old brother.

Guavafish1 · 05/12/2023 16:59

I would substitute cheerio with something else.

Tbf in this case it’s probably the only think that you could possibly query.

Although this is MN so there’s still room for someone to come on and point out your child might as well be shooting up heroin as have a pear for a snack.

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/12/2023 17:45

That was the wrong quote.

ElFupacabra · 05/12/2023 17:45

God, mine gets “hoops” every bloody day at nursery. It’s fine to be concerned about kids diet but some take it too far. Balance and all that. Looks absolutely fine. Love to hear from the poster screaming about sugar as it how it is too high.

Topseyt123 · 05/12/2023 17:45

Sounds fine to me, including the Cheerios. Mine grew up on things like Cheerios, Weetabix or Shreddies when they were small and they seem to have survived.

breakingpointt · 05/12/2023 17:46

It sounds fine to me ! But I have a toddler who only eats crackers, melty sticks, plain pasta, plain chicken peas and baby formula (arfid)

High on sugar, where? Honestly wondering.

Well, it was actually MIL who made a ‘poor kids’ type of comment. I normally get on well with her which is why I’m a bit Confused

I don't see how she could criticise that nutritionally. Does she dislike tuna, avocado or sweetcorn? Is it the lack of cake, biscuits, sweets and sugary squash that's the issue?

theduchessofspork · 05/12/2023 17:50

I’d quite like that

Take no notice

I suppose in a world of perfection a portion of veg with dinner and some protein for breakfast in the form of yogurt

Sandysandwich · 05/12/2023 17:50

Totally fine, sounds really nice.
People can be weird- a mum at nursery told me I was irresponsible giving my child a banana in his lunchbox as "it's basically a stick of sugar".

There are some right nutters about. Did she do the headtilt and tinkly laugh as she said it?

Ultra processed yuk 🤣

I have it in for cereals, I must admit. I think they are the work of the Devil. I have never knowingly eaten a Cheerio - perhaps they are lovely!

I wouldn't have been able to resist responding "don't be so utterly ridiculous" to that.🙄🤣

I honestly can't take such idiots seriously.

pizzaHeart · 05/12/2023 17:56

My Mum would say that it’s not enough and too complicated, maybe it’s that? But she was absolutely horrified at my carrot and lentil soup for DD as the idea of veggie soup was completely alien to her.

HenriettaVienetta · 05/12/2023 17:57

No point ever posting about toddler meals here. Whatever you give them, someone will be catsbumming about sugar or additives, or protein or something. And everyone has different view on what is healthy/balanced so it then descends into factional bunfighting! With rock cakes lobbed in the other direction. 🤣

@GasGasp0deTheW0nderD0g
She pulled me aside, wide eyed with a look of concern as if she was warning me off giving my three year old a bag of knives.

It's kids brought up like that who eat nothing but Pot Noodles and fast food when they finally get away from their parents. At least, that's what I always hope.

TravellingT · 05/12/2023 18:07

My husband was raised drinking squash and cola while still drinking from a bottle, was constantly given tea and biscuits as a toddler and dinner always involved bread and butter. I wonder if your MIL thinks your toddler needs more crap and sugar? The menus seem perfect, cheerios aren't poison, and kids are fussy- fed is best and if cheerios are the worst part of their menu you're doing very well!

spriots · 05/12/2023 18:12

I think it's pretty good - but if I was going to point something out it would be that there's not a lot of veg. Slightly depends what you put in the chicken curry obviously.

I don't always manage this but I aim for 3 portions of veg and 2 of fruit a day.

SecondUsername4me · 05/12/2023 18:13

Fairylightfurore · 05/12/2023 16:59

It's fine, possibly a bit high on sugar if having everyday but as one meal in a week it looks ok

Unless the yoghurt has sugar in it then I'm not seeing where there is any (unless you suggest natural sugars in pear/sweetcorn is an issue)

It's absolutely fine.

But as you asked about the sugar:

Carbs are basically sugar - so the cheerios and bread are both sugar. Pear is also sugar, and sweetcorn has sugar too. Depending how you are making the chicken curry, that could have sugar (if you use a ready made sauce etc). The yoghurt will be sugary too if it is a flavoured/ processed fruit yoghurt - obviously not if it's just natural yoghurt but most toddlers won't like that.

So all in all, it could be quite high in sugar.

But honestly, that is nitpicking, and I'm only answering because you asked.

I think it's a perfectly healthy diet and I doubt it's too much sugar for a growing child.

Mumaway · 05/12/2023 18:23

I think it looks ok Cheerios are a no go in our house because of the sugar, but they do a low sugar version (in a blue box) that might work. They smell gross though, and although the kids eat them I definitely wouldn't!

wiseoldcat · 05/12/2023 18:24

SecondUsername4me · 05/12/2023 18:13

I don't think it's that the natural sugars are an 'issue', just that they are still sugar, so if you add it to the sugar in the cheerios, bread, yoghurt, then it could add up to be quite a lot.

But that is not unusual at all for a western diet and I certainly think it could be a lot worse. I don't think the 'poor kids' comment was warranted at all!

Ilovetocookandbake · 05/12/2023 18:24

There was quite a bit of veg in the curry, but probably could have tried to have more overall. Never sure if avocado is veg or fruit actually!

The yoghurt was a sugary one to be fair, Peppa Pig no less, but y’know …
