To send Christmas cards?

Do any of you send Christmas cards? This year it seems to be treated as a weird anachronism instead of nice thing to do.

I like having ways of checking in with friends that doesn’t rely on my phone, but a friend of mine said it creates a sense of pressure and obligation at a stressful time of year.

I do send a few, but I think it is a tradition that is dying out.

CharityShopChic · 05/12/2023 10:46

Well it's entirely up to you, isn't it? It's a rapidly declining tradition though, fewer sent every year. I volunteer in a charity shop and for the last decade card sales have fallen year on year. And with a second class stamp costing 75p and first class £1.25, it can be an expensive tradition to keep up.

FuzzyPuffling · 05/12/2023 10:47

I love getting Christmas cards ( and send them too) . Good on you!

MermaidEyes · 05/12/2023 10:48

I only send (postal) to about 3 family members who I actually think a lot of. Then there's around 10 or so friends/neighbours who get one. I've stopped sending to anyone I have no other interaction with throughout the year.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/12/2023 10:49

Wasn’t going to but some cheery bugger has sent us one already, so that’s at least 1 to go back 😁

LoreleiG · 05/12/2023 10:50

I send them. Not to everyone though. The cost of postage is off putting!

SwingTheMonkey · 05/12/2023 10:57

Only to elderly relatives who expect one. It’s too expensive otherwise and with the postal service so unreliable, cards don’t always make it before Christmas anyway.

KimberleyClark · 05/12/2023 11:00

I send Christmas cards. Have a couple of friends not on SM and it is a way of keeping in touch.

ComtesseDeSpair · 05/12/2023 11:02

We do. It’s one of our traditions: we go to the same pub every year, bagsie the table nearest the fireplace and jointly write our cards, getting steadily more tipsy as the afternoon wears on. By drink number three, we think our little messages and drawings are hilarious, then they turn slushily sentimental. Our friends enjoy it, we enjoy it, it’s nice to post and receive something in the mail which isn’t a bill or a mass marketing campaign from Foxton’s promising they can sell your house for the best price to waiting buyers.

HoHoHoliday · 05/12/2023 11:03

I send Christmas cards, I write messages inside specific to the person I'm sending to. I love to receive them too, it really makes me happy.

TheBirdintheCave · 05/12/2023 11:03

I'm not sending any via post but we are giving them to our friends as/when we see them.

luckylavender · 05/12/2023 11:04

I do. I send quite a lot. Fewer than I used to but still a sizeable amount. I don't care what people think.

SallyWD · 05/12/2023 11:21

I have always sent them and always will. I think it's a lovely tradition. I also still send letters to people.
I don't mind at all if people don't send Christmas cards to me. I just enjoy sending them. Choosing a card for each person and writing a little message is a real pleasure.

caringcarer · 05/12/2023 11:28

I visit my sister's about 3 hours drive away the first Thursday of December every year. I'll be taking them Xmas cards and they will give me cards. I hang mine on a string in sitting room. Each year I get 1 or 2 less as elderly relatives die. I like them and think of the person when I write them.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 05/12/2023 11:33

It’s been dying out for the last 10 or so years. I still send a few but no more than 10.

eardefender · 05/12/2023 11:38

Its a lovely old fashioned tradition and i am sad it is dying out. I always send them. They are so christmassey and thoughtful. A text or email cant compare.

I love this idea! I might steal it.

mrswhiplington · 05/12/2023 11:42

I still do a few. Only have to post 2 though. The rest are family and some of the neighbours. I enjoy receiving them as well.

5foot5 · 05/12/2023 11:45

We send them. In fact we just finished writing the last one about 15 minutes ago!

We are sending just over 40 this year. It used to be more but the number has dwindled over the years. Partly due to elderly relatives dying off and partly because we both retired a couple of years ago so we are no longer sending cards to people at work.

We will hand deliver all we can but there are still around 30 to post.

I have already received one, it arrived at the end of November! I hang them on strings which I pin to the top edge of the door so they make a nice decoration.

I am aware it is probably an age thing and maybe dying out. Some of the people I exchange cards with also include letters so it is a nice way to keep up to date for those of us who don't do much SM. I actually eagerly await the round Robin we are guaranteed in at least two cards!

I always buy charity cards. There is a combined charities shop in our local library through November which is run by volunteers.

BettyfromBristol · 05/12/2023 11:45

I send fewer cards than I used to but that is more to do with people dying than the cost of postage. Probably about twenty this year.

Keeping in touch with friends is one of the very few Christmassy things I do although I choose cards which are not religious in any way.

ohtowinthelottery · 05/12/2023 11:50

I do but I reduce the number each year - although I've still got 20 or so to post and 12 to hand deliver.

goldennavy · 05/12/2023 11:53

I hand paint and decorate/personalize cards. What started as a hobby has turned into a great small business for me.
Most of my cards are suitable for framing and hanging on a wall. Hence I get lots of business and repeat orders.
Cards so often give pleasure.

Stephisaur · 05/12/2023 11:57

Always. I've got about 60 to write.

Colleagues, Neighbours, Friends, Family...

I love sending them!

SandyWaves · 05/12/2023 12:00

I love Christmas cards but agree they really are dying out.

I always buy charity cards and bought a load for my DC to give to their classmates. Sadly, they don't want to write them because it will mean they are 'geeky'. I used to have so many when I was a kid, we all wrote them.

Elfontheshmelf · 05/12/2023 12:01

I send cards to elderly relatives who I know appreciate it, especially as my son signs his name and draws pictures in them as well. Friends my own age (thirties) don't really expect them or send them to me so I don't bother doing loads, but my grandparents would notice if I didn't send them one.
