What on earth is a Christmas Eve box??

I've suddenly seen 'Christmas Eve boxes' popping up everywhere. In shops, on Etsy, social feeds. Never even heard of the concept and now all of a sudden it's everywhere.

Can someone explain the point? Seems like they are filled with same kind of things you'd put in a stocking. Be honest, is it just another Instagram fad/ excuse to spend money?

I didn't realise that hot chocolate was a special Christmas thing, don't people have it most of the year.

How many sets of bedding are you allowed to have I wonder?

One on, one off, one in the wash. Anything else is just wasteful!! (Said in the old Yorkshire accent of my dear departed grandmother).

Or...as many as you like and are able to store.

UnimaginableWindBird · 04/12/2023 16:03

I use brushed cotton bedding in winter and linen in summer. I also use a different duvet in warm and cold weather. Isn't that fairly normal?

User136921 · 04/12/2023 16:03

You can buy pyjamas all year round

Yeah so much junk. Why do kids need pyjamas and books anyway? Let them sleep in old rags and read the milk bottle before bed 🙄

Why do parents feel they have to "gift" pj's and a book to their children. Might start doing this all year round, gifting Easter underpants and Halloween socks. Might even start putting breakfast in a box on a daily basis as a celebration for the coming of summer. Weekend homework will come in a gift bag with ribbon.

Do what you want 🤷‍♀️

Socks as a gift are certainly nothing new

Should probs have a few sets of Christmas bedding - since maist folk on here like to claim they change it daily 🎉

Prinnny · 04/12/2023 16:05

We do a 1st of Dec box, it comes down from
the attic and is filled with all the Christmas books and hair accessories we’ve accumulated over the years, Santas plate, craft bits to make Christmas cards for family and shock horror I get a new pair of pyjamas, gingerbread house kit and an advent calendar to go with it.

So gluttonous and wasteful, I’ll defo be on the naughty list 🤣

Wednesdaysotherchild · 04/12/2023 16:05

It’s not a thing! It’s just the last gasps of end stage consumer culture, burping out plastic tat and polyester pyjamas for all who succumb.

A disgusting and completely wasteful greedy use of the worlds resources for 'keeping up with the joneses' type gross parents.

Should be bloody boycotted!!

Calm down love.

Queucumber · 04/12/2023 16:06

I was an 80s child. We never has Christmas Eve boxes. Still, each Christmas morning we unwrapped new pyjamas or nighties, cosy socks, a Cadbury’s selection box, books, little toys etc. They just happened to be in Christmas Stockings or under the tree. The only difference seems to be opening some present about 16 hours earlier and a personalised wooden box!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/12/2023 16:06

Ahh , okay . I'll bite .

Christmas Eve Hampers : (CEH)
Pyjamas (winter , not Christmas . Flannel and probably tartan)
A bath bomb
A sachet of hot chocolate
Small pack of biscuits
Annual
Advent calendar
To settle them , do a bath/pyjamas/drink/read routine then bedtime

Mine are 24 and 21
I do the Dec 1st Hamper
They get pyjamas /loungewear
Underwear /socks
Toiletries/make-up

They don't need settled on Christmas Eve night . They do like to use their new things all through December .

Its not tat . They aren't spoiled .

Do them or don't do them.
No-one is holding a gun to your head are they .?

I could just do without the faux horror Is this A THING ? that gets rolled out on MN , I imagine the arched eyebrows and the mouth stretched out in an elomgated O .

Every pair of pjs I've been given on Christmas Eve are cotton....

Bleakmidwinter1977 · 04/12/2023 16:06

Socks as a gift for your own children is quite sad. It's like asking them to thank you for the pain you suffered during child birth.

TheKeatingFive · 04/12/2023 16:07

polyester pyjamas

Why assume that? Other than to be snotty of course. Plenty of cotton Christmas pjs out there

Terfosaurus · 04/12/2023 16:07

TheKeatingFive · 04/12/2023 16:01

I've got 7 Blush none of them are Christmasy though.

TheMainChristmasCharacter · 04/12/2023 16:07

I started giving mine new (not Christmassy) pyjamas on Christmas Eve because they tended to need them around then. Also it made them excited to get ready for bed 🤣 so they’d get their pyjamas on then we’d watch a Christmassy film before they went to bed. My younger children don’t always need new pyjamas at Christmas but my older two would revolt if I broke tradition now!

ArthnoldManacatsaman · 04/12/2023 16:07

TheKeatingFive · 04/12/2023 15:59

Now you can buy Christmas sheets and pillowcases. I bet they don't get used all year round.

Who knows. If I had them, I wouldn't put it past me. Perhaps they get used for the month of December for many years though?

Indeed - my mother bought Christmas duvet sets for her grandchildren in 2008. They have been used every December since then (usually put out on the first night of the school holidays) and will be for many years to come as they still look like new. I see those as a bit different from pyjamas though since children don’t grow out of them - wouldn’t use pyjamas for 2-3 weeks a year, that would be waste

Tartan is fine if you identify as Scottish, otherwise, it's just an appropriation of another culture.

What's sad about having nice things to put on your feet?

Cheeseywheel · 04/12/2023 16:09

We love a Christmas Eve box. Pjs and a book. No need to sneer at us, it’s really unkind.

Ha! My 24yo likes socks , he's a student so wouldn't think to spend his own money on this .
And if I gave him cash he'd pocket it and run about in socks he wore at 16 Xmas Wink
