What on earth is a Christmas Eve box??

I've suddenly seen 'Christmas Eve boxes' popping up everywhere. In shops, on Etsy, social feeds. Never even heard of the concept and now all of a sudden it's everywhere.

Can someone explain the point? Seems like they are filled with same kind of things you'd put in a stocking. Be honest, is it just another Instagram fad/ excuse to spend money?

The Pyjamas I have bought my children will last them all year, probably 2 years going on the christmas ones they are currently wearing that they got from a relative 2 years ago and are just growing out of.

They cost me £8 a pair, I always get a size bigger, and they will wear them all year (along with another couple of pairs they have that still fit).

I don’t think £16 between them for a couple of years wear is bad value at all!

If they are still in good condition when they have grown out of them (which pyjamas usually are), then they are taken to the charity shop, no
waste.

Keep thinking this.....

Does it matter if you wear pyjamas that have a design of a christmas puds or candy canes or snowflakes..... ( insert your own choice here ) in April?

We all know the answer.

Needmorelego · 08/12/2023 09:53

@sunglassesonthetable by April we should all be on to jammies with bunnies on surely?
For our Easter Egg hunts 🤣🤣

So don't. But the sales happen in order to get rid of stock they didn't sell at peak time. Most people want to give their gifts at Christmas so they buy them before Christmas.

Do you really not grasp this?

I generally get my pyjamas in the Next sale, for me, not for a box and if I get first slot which I generally do, they often arrive before Christmas

Easter Bunny Box!!!!!

That's nice.

I’ve always bought my DC new pyjamas, socks, a Christmas bath bomb and chocolate Santa on Christmas Eve since they were very small. It’s just a little tradition I started years ago and have kept doing. They use the bath bomb in the bath then get into their new pjs and socks and I take a pic of them in front of the tree. Just always done this, nothing tacky about it imo.

Needmorelego · 08/12/2023 10:03

@sunglassesonthetable I mean who wouldn't want this ?
(disclaimer.....bunnies are for life not just Easter etc etc 🙂)

We put in Christmas DVDs (the same ones each year), hot chocolates, popcorn, reindeer food (oats & edible glitter) in the same old present box. We try to have a calming film night before bed.

We don't usually bother with the tat as such or PJs, new toothbrush stuff etc.

Needmorelego · 08/12/2023 12:51

@SabihaN you've just proved my point about the meaningless of the word "tat".
How can everyday basics (nightwear and tooth brushes) be "tat" ?

Even people who do boxes sneer at people who do different boxes. At least you're not denying your box is a box, I suppose.

How are pyjamas and toothbrushes "tat" but your glittery porridge oats aren't?

Flopsyj · 09/12/2023 12:13

Not new in our family. My kids are 11 & 14 and we’ve always done them. PJ’s, a book, hot chocolate and a small gift. Guess every family has their own traditions, so just do what suits yours. Exchanging of gifts on Xmas eve is not a new phenomenon, many countries do it.

Flopsyj · 09/12/2023 12:22

In many countries presents are exchanged on Xmas eve. German is a very famous example of this. Maybe they are simply following family traditions. My family has German heritage, but we are British so this is why we do it. Not to demand extra gratitude or to buy ‘tat’. Some real uneducated comments on here

So true. I've just realised that I don't even have a box, my xmas eve box is a pile on the stairs. I voted the wrong way, I should have said boxes are shit, since I package my PJs differently.

The OP should have said "Xmas eve boxes are shit:
YABU: I love them, we have new PJs and a bath bomb, it's nice
YANBU: We just have new PJs and a bath bomb, it's all social media excess."

So PJs, which will be worn multiple times are tat, but 'food' for non existent reindeer is fine. Get in the fucking bin.

Cheeseywheel · 10/12/2023 06:50

The poster clearly says ‘tat OR PJs/toothbrsh’

Needmorelego · 10/12/2023 07:03

@Cheeseywheel I stand corrected - as I missed that "or".
I still hate the word "tat" though.
