Am thinking about my friend and her stolen car - as she doesn't have any money she bought the car on finance. They have said she is still eligible for the 3 years of payments even if insurance does not pay out, which they may not. A more well off person would have taken a bank loan or bought a car out straight. If she had some savings she could try and buy another car. She is spending money on taxis bringing her dds taxis to and from school. It just goes on and on. It's very hard to pull yourself out of these situations isnt it.

Why would her insurance not pay out?

Ceci03 · 04/12/2023 13:50

Because she left her key outside and they used it to steal the car?

Plus the amount owed on the finance will far exceed the amount paid out unfortunately due to interest, depreciation etc.

What's the issue with insurance? They should pay outnas well as for replacement car.

Unless she only had 3rd party....

Hollyhead · 04/12/2023 13:53

Oh god poor thing, presuming the key outside was an accident.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 04/12/2023 13:54

A more well off person who took out a bak loan would also have been liable for the loan repayments...

RendeersDancingTowardsChristmas · 04/12/2023 13:54

Oh ok she's left the keys, well lesson learnt.
Who leaves their key outside??

Tracker1234 · 04/12/2023 13:55

She left the key outside? That's nothing to do with being poor!

Ducksinthebath · 04/12/2023 13:55

The bank wouldn’t cancel the loan if the car got nicked.

Mrsbusybody · 04/12/2023 13:58

I don’t think this has anything to do with inequality and I am someone who gets wound up over decisions made by the government that have an effect on poorer people.

Have you never made a mistake in your life or been absent minded?

Because she left her key outside and they used it to steal the car?

Why are you replying as if we know what happened? Utterly bizarre!

Ceci03 · 04/12/2023 14:00

Yeh well even rich people make mistakes - her dd was desperate for a wee and was rushing in the door and in the chaos of coming in she inadvertently left the keys in her front door. I've done that too. That's good about the insurance. No she has comp.

murasaki · 04/12/2023 14:01

Well the bank loan would need to be repaid, the cash would be lost, so she's no worse off than anyone else for what was, let's be honest, her mistake.

purplewater · 04/12/2023 14:02

You'd still need to pay a bank loan same as a PCP. Fingers crossed insurance pays out I'm not sure how that all works with the key being in plain sight. Sounds horrible for her.

Panderoo · 04/12/2023 14:02

That’s purely to do with forgetting her keys were in the lock and nothing to do with her income.

Did she try for a bank loan or a loan off of a community bank and get turned down?

RedToothBrush · 04/12/2023 14:02

Ceci03 · 04/12/2023 13:50

Well she wouldn't have the issue here if she hadn't been a fuckwit and paid more attention to her security.

LlynTegid · 04/12/2023 14:03

In general I agree with you, this seems someone being careless not about low incomes.

WestwardHo1 · 04/12/2023 14:05

YANBU

People with money get better deals on everything. They can amass points on credit cards which they pay off in full every month, for example. My boyfriend earns well and his employers pay for his private health insurance. Just two examples.

Life is just far harder in every way if you don't have much money.

Overthebow · 04/12/2023 14:05

I think this is stretching it a bit, it’s her fault she left the keys out and that has nothing to do with income.

murasaki · 04/12/2023 14:05

If i rent and I leave my key in the front door and someone raids my house, am I somehow more deserving than a homeowner who does the same? I think not.

She's paying the stupidity tax, sadly, amd that crosses income barriers.

BorgQueen · 04/12/2023 14:06

Who would be stupid enough to admit to the insurance that they left the keys in?

mondaytosunday · 04/12/2023 14:06

Your example is poor. Many 'rich' people lease their cars, and as pointed out bank loans (which would generally be a more expensive way of buying a car) would not be forgiven.
Even relatively high income people do not have £25-35k sitting in their bank to buy a car with.

WestwardHo1 · 04/12/2023 14:06

The key thing is bad luck and could have happened to a well off person.

beepbeepboppy · 04/12/2023 14:06

For the future, mention to your friend if she takes out a car loan/finance again, Take out GAP insurance. It pays out the difference between the finance balance and the insurance payout.

Most sales people at garages will try sell it, it's definitely worth it.
