To think it’s impossible to find a flattering dress

I’ve been searching for a dress for Christmas Day, but it feels impossible when you are petite height wise but have boobs and a belly, I can’t find anything even slightly flattering… help a gal out with ideas please!

A wrap dress? As in comes down to a v neck and ties at the waist. The skirt part is A line.

I always think (or was maybe guided by Trinny and Susana, back in the day) that they look fab on curves.

maybemaybeno · 03/12/2023 22:02

YANBU it’s bloody hard this year!! The more I look, the more frazzled I feel by the lack of options

theduchessofspork · 03/12/2023 22:03

I was going to say a wrap dress, but head over to style and beauty - they will help

@Artesia

did you miss the 'good to know'

Model is 5ft 6in and wears size UK 8 Designed for a slim fit

the model is beyond 'slum'
flat chested
above average height.

@Thisismynewname23

sorry, I'm barely 5ft, very busty, and a tummy bigger than yours! I look like a bloody lampshade in dresses or skirts.

You sound slimmer & younger than me. I wish you all the best finding something.

I'll be sticking to jeans. .

GrumpyOldCrone · 03/12/2023 22:24

If you like your legs, wear something above the knee, with tights if you feel the cold and heels if you can wear them.

A v-neckline is good for a big bust, and a skater style skirt is usually good for disguising a tummy. Stick to one colour, e.g.black or navy, and accessorise with jewellery.

SootspriteSearcher · 03/12/2023 22:55

I find the most flattering style is swing/skater.
Collectif, dolly and dotty, british retro and hell bunny all have beautiful dresses to suit all tastes and shapes so well worth a browse. I have dresses from all of them, and petticoats/short cardigans from various places too which I interchange with the dresses.

No- I didn't miss it. But I'm 5'3" with boobs, stomach and hips, and it looks bloody fabulous on me- had loads of compliments- so thought it was worth recommending. No need to get quite so exercised about attempts to assist.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 03/12/2023 23:01

I'm short and fat, 5ft 2 and 12 stone. I tried on so many dresses, all looked awful.
I have bought a knitted dress. Loose fitting, no pulled in waist and completely hides my body. Perfect!

This company is great for dressing the boobliscious, and the owner shows the clothes on a variety of shapes and sizes.

KenAdams · 04/12/2023 00:06

Same as you. I have lots luck with v neck, velvet ruched dresses.

I wore an AX Paris one out the other night. Again, ruched and I sized up.

Foxsoxandgloves · 04/12/2023 07:12

I'm sorry, I know its not what you want to hear but the reason clothes aren't flattering when you are overweight is because you are overweight. That's all there is to it. I used to be fat and now am an 8 to 10 and my greatest joy is trying on clothes knowing things will just fit. I know its not a popular opinion but it's just because people don't say what they really think. People don't really love their curves, everyone knows you are treated by others, and feel yourself, totally different when fat to when thin.

AhBiscuits · 04/12/2023 07:16

Don't get one of those awful short, satin wrap dresses that seem popular atm. They look like dressing gowns.

I have a nice v-neck tea dress I got in monsoon which is flattering.

I don’t think it’s as simple as that. I am five 2 with a bmi of 19 but disproportionately large boobs and belly. So many dresses are not flattering on me. Anything with a waist gives me a matronly ‘bosom’ and stomach.

It isn’t just about being overweight. I have many friends who are much bigger than me, but because everything is in proportion, they look gorgeous and suit so many more clothes than I do.

OP, I stick with tops and short skirts as I have decent legs. Or I do a nice top and stylish (not skinny!) jeans. I share your dress pain! Especially at this time of year. Most dresses posted here would not suit me.

Wrap dresses are really not that flattering for many people. Despite what Trinny and Susannah said! Agree re the dressing gown look!

Hi @Thisismynewname23

I'm 47, a size 16 with big boobs & a bit of a tummy to disguise, short 5'4" but with good legs.
So to my work Christmas Party I wore a black wrap front silky jacquard above the knee dress from River Island.
I got it BNWT for £14 on eBay!

It's very flattering as it drapes rather than clings, has long sleeves and skims my shape.
It has an elasticated waist & did have a material belt but I cut it off as I felt it didn't flatter.
I wore black patterned tights from New Look & black heels, & a black & gold River Island crossbody with gold jewellery for accessories.

I think with bigger up top wear wrap tops & v necks also scoop necklines are ideal with a very good bra.
Wear something that drapes or has ruching across your belly.
Pick out what you like about yourself and show off that feature eg for me it's my legs.

This is the dress (before I ironed it & removed the belt) & the tights.

To think it’s impossible to find a flattering dress

Not sure I agree with this at all - I'm a healthy BMI and pretty slim overall but since my 3 C-section babies I have a belly/overhang that will never shift. Pair that with quite a small chest and no waist, it's completely changed the shape of my body and will never (in my mind) look nice. Lots and lots of clothes (in a magical size 10, no less) just don't look flattering on me.

My friend is about 5ft10, big boobs, very very tiny waist and runs marathons etc for fun. Her hips are naturally really wide despite not having an ounce of fat anywhere on her body, actually it is probably accentuated by this. She struggles to find flattering clothes to fit her shape.

lookingforMolly · 04/12/2023 07:39

Ps it isn't satin & didn't look like a dressing gown!

No one asked for this advice, get lost 😡

Hello Op,

Sorry I haven’t read all the posts so this may have been mentioned already. Whistles do fab dresses, which skim the tummy area. I am petite with boobs and a tummy and I love them. I go for the midi dresses and they are very flattering but obviously longer than midi on me but a perfect length for heels or flats. They have started doing them in a petite size now too! Happy shopping xx
