Selling on Vinted for well over priced paid

Just browsing on Vinted and notice people take the absolute mickey when selling items on there which are sold out in shops...

Some people clearly buy in bulk just to sell on Vinted (for triple the original price) when they realise that items are limited edition etc. I don't believe them when they say 'bought for me - doesn't quite fit...' well why did you buy 4 in the same colour then Shock?

I know people will pay if they want but these items seem to sit there because people aren't stupid.

It's pure selfishness and greed

But that's life, people trying to make a few quid and people willing to pay it.

stargirl1701 · 03/12/2023 13:22

That is capitalism.

BoohooWoohoo · 03/12/2023 13:23

People have always done this and always will. I am very lucky that I haven’t had to pay over the odds on EBay

Silverstoat · 03/12/2023 13:25

What about luxury brands? They buy materials and fabric, pay some poor soul minimum wage to sew the thing together, then wack an emblem on it and sell it for 10000% more than its actual value.

letmeeatinpeace · 03/12/2023 13:32

I once sold a heated clothes airer on my local buy&sell group, for a low price, only to find that the person who bought it re-sold it on the SAME group for 4x the price. That really pissed me off. But my DP thought it was fair game.

Cornettoninja · 03/12/2023 13:32

it goes on but I can’t get worked up over it tbh. I have the option to not buy from sellers. if they have something I want that I can’t get anywhere else that’s on me. 🤷‍♀️

QueenMegan · 03/12/2023 13:35

You just offer what you think its worth. I have never ever paid what they want. Often it's high street brands that people take the sick plus postage

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 03/12/2023 13:36

It’s supply and demand surely? If they don’t sell then the price will have to come down. You’re being unreasonable and you don’t have to buy.

I’ve had some great buys off Vinted and all under £10 so it depends what you want to buy.

Sailawaytocromer · 03/12/2023 13:37

I once did this when I was in an awful relationship and was on mat leave. Bought 20 or so “must have” items and sold for 4 times the price (no exaggeration). I don’t feel at all bad. The items I sold were not essential for anyone to have and it was an easy way for me to make some much needed money for very little effort. I’d do it again if I ever needed to.

I have never “needed” to buy anything at an inflated price on eBay etc. I probably wouldn’t. There have been tops sold out at my favourite shop that are then sold on for more but I just wait and buy one second hand a year later (if I still really want it).

Sailawaytocromer · 03/12/2023 13:38

I will add that one of my dc desperate wanted something for Christmas that costs £60 new. I got it for £5 on vinted - had been worn once! Wouldn’t buy overpriced things but when I was in a tough situation I was glad others were willing to…!

Sparklesocks · 03/12/2023 13:42

You get a real mix on vinted - I get a lot of baby clothes on there and will find a lovely John Lewis cardigan in great shape for £1.50 but then see someone trying to flog a used single primark sleepsuit for a fiver. But yes if it’s sold out and demand is high you can charge a bit higher. Just the way it works. Always worth putting a reasonable offer in as some people will price higher expecting a bit of bartering.

I did see someone selling single Christmas cards for £1.50 each - not handmade or artsy or anything, just normal store bought cards they didn’t want - but of course when you factor in postage/fees those cards will be £4-5 - nobody is going to pay that when they get a whole pack for the same price new in shops.

Happyhippos21 · 03/12/2023 13:44

I think its a real mixed bag on vinted and obviously if your unhappy with a price then dont buy or make an offer.

The one think i dont understand is people who are selling a primark baby set for like £4 by the time postage and fees are added you are literally as well buying new.

PrimalOwl10 · 03/12/2023 13:47

I've seen stuff overpriced it never sells. I've seen stuff from primark on vinted for 20 quid more. One was a stitch suitcase priced at 65 it was 45 pounds. I looked at vinted thinking I might get one used but found it ridiculously priced

TheWayTheLightFalls · 03/12/2023 13:51

A market is made up of buyers and sellers 🤷‍♀️

I’m not a fan of people stockpiling all the Kevin the Carrots or whatever and selling for multiples online, but then again I can’t think of any item I’d be willing to pay ££££ over the odds for.

One of my neighbours was having a clear out recently and I spotted two unopened but retired Lego sets she was selling, both for £20. I’ve since resold one for £55 and the other for £35. Felt guilty at first but she is smart enough to see what things go for online and apparently wanted to sell in a hurry as she is decluttering.

lkwhjis · 03/12/2023 14:00

This is what EBay was about when it first started decades ago. Nothing new.

EyeInTheSky23 · 03/12/2023 14:19

I'm struggling to think of what items get sold out in shops, and that ppl would pay x 4 the RRP for!

Can they really not get an alternative

skyeisthelimit · 03/12/2023 14:21

I don't agree with people buying multiples to resell but it's always happened and will continue to happen. If there is a limited edition item then everyone should get the same chance to buy from the retailer. If retailers limited it to 1 per person it would help.

I sell cheap and cheerful on vinted to get rid of it, but I have got some great bargains. There were a couple of musical theatre books that DD wanted, and they are £35 each on Amazon. I paid around £15 including postage and they are in mint condition

He’s right.

StockpotSoup · 03/12/2023 14:35

A few years ago I saw that LEGO advent calendars had shot up in price on Amazon through resellers when Amazon’s stock had sold out. The next year I bought five as soon as they came online in September and sold them all for a profit in November. Better in my pocket than someone else’s.

19lottie82 · 03/12/2023 14:38

So should all
shops just sell their stock for what they originally paid for it?
YABU

no one is forced to buy something they don’t want.

lollo8 · 03/12/2023 14:40

Don't buy it then.

Honestly, so many threads on here are about people getting all huffed up about something they could simply ignore. No wonder so many people are unhappy, if they get wound up by all of these things that have absolutely nothing to do with them.

Sailawaytocromer · 03/12/2023 14:50

@EyeInTheSky23 it was a John Lewis Christmas toy… I think it was £15 new and they were selling for £50-£75!!

vintedSeller123 · 03/12/2023 15:06

@threebean are you the oddball who messaged me on Vinted calling me a ‘scrounging melt’ on Vinted for selling a wooden cuthbert!

(fyi if this is you it’s ‘you’re’)

Ive got to admit I was surprised by the vitriol tbh. I bought one then saw what they were selling for so listed it. If anyone wants it fair enough, if not I’ll include it in my child’s birthday presents as planned.

Gosh, it seems a bit mean when it's a child's toy.

I thought it was clothing or something.
