Outdoor Flashing Xmas Lights

slightly lighthearted

If you love all the Xmas lights and decorations- then great! I have my own inside. But you can't see your big fuck off flashing lights as they are outside your house, and you are inside it. In fact, your flashing lights are only seen by me and a few other neighbours, mainly in my living room and bedroom. I don't understand!!!! Why???

Obviously I can't say anything as that would make me look completely miserable, but don't people think?? Even lights permanently on would be preferable to the flashing!!!

AIBU to not want flashing lights pointed at my house?

Yanbu, and I think it’s ok to say something like ask whether they can maybe turn them off at x time as the flashing is quite bright in your bedroom.

DancingAgain · 03/12/2023 05:42

We see them when we come home from being out. 😉 And we can actually see some of our lights from inside the house.

DramaAlpaca · 03/12/2023 05:42

YANBU at all, and I would politely ask them to turn them off at night.

Holly2285 · 03/12/2023 05:49

Across the road have got blue flashing ones this year. I keep thinking emergency services are outside. They have them on 24/7 as well.

ChimChimeny · 03/12/2023 06:00

They have them on 24/7 as well.
Well that's unnecessary!
We have two sets of outside lights although only used one last year & not sure if we'll do both this year, ours are usually on a slow fade, I read on here about flashing lights giving people migraines and annoying them and our house being quite prominent (on hill on a corner) so never have them flashing

That's what drapes are for. If you're like this about something as delightful as Christmas lights I can't imagine how you are about real problems.

fairygalaxy · 03/12/2023 06:08

It's lazy not to set the timer so they go off at 11

I'd want to say something but, let's be honest, it's a certain type of person who has that sort of display.

If anyone like that moved into my vicinity, I would have to move home as flashing lights are a major migraine trigger for me.

I don't really want to spend months every year living in my kitchen and bathroom to accommodate their 'Look At Me!!!!' arseholery.

GetYourBaublesOut · 03/12/2023 06:15

Agree OP.

I love Xmas lights but a load of flashing ones are a pita. Especially 24/7.

Bringing joy to others or showing off.

Just shut your curtains.

rockingbird · 03/12/2023 06:16

The children wanted a snowflake projector in the garden projecting onto the front of the house. We did our tree and decorations yesterday.. I set it up and was immediately thinking I bet the next door neighbours complain so swiftly switched it off.. 🫣 some of the houses round here are like full on winter wonderland.. and there's me wondering about snowflakes!! I'm going to knock and ask their opinion today, I'd hate to be that neighbour who pisses off next door at Christmas.

I get those with tasteful displays, with twinkling/fading lights etc.

But the 'in your face' flashing lights, what precisely is delightful about those flashing all day and all night?

Hearmenow23 · 03/12/2023 06:21

Yes obviously I'll be closing the curtains, but it got me thinking about the thinking 🤔.

The people with the lights are very sweet and just excited, I would imagine, but they can't actually see their lights!

I love the ones that dont flash or even flash slowly. It's the disco like strobey Ones I'm not keen on

Devilsmommy · 03/12/2023 06:26

It's like a competitive sport. Who can get the most up and the most flashing and annoying ones 😁

And they can see the lights when they come home after work etc

Kids play outside and see them. They’re nice to come home to. They’re nice to welcome visitors. And we can see some of ours from inside. I don’t understand what you’re not getting. 🤣

Nofilteritwonthelp · 03/12/2023 06:32

I love Xmas lights, but YANBU I can see how that would be annoying. Do you not have blinds/curtains? I'd just ask if they can turn them off before the go to bed

For me the highlight of the year as a child was driving around rich neighborhoods where most people had over the top displays with millions of lights and different characters like Jiminy Cricket flying across their yard on a pulley, etc. I had a very rough childhood and this was one of my very few happy memories. I don't think it takes a tragic backstory to create a happy association however, maybe just a good attitude and a general spirit of not being snotty. I mean really...tasteful? Who made you the judge of what's appropriate and what's not? It's just your opinion. And you know what they say about opinions! Lighten up! Pun intended!

Trez1510 · 03/12/2023 06:43

@flowerchild2000 you were dragged round rich folks' neighbourhoods at 2 or 3am? That is indeed a tragic backstory.

My judgement as to what is suitable/tasteful is guided by the type of lights that will or will not trigger migraines for me.

As an aside, I would bet a dollar to a cent those who rich neighbourhood residents a) did not have their displays flashing 24/7, and b) had homes large enough to allow them to continue living their lives without harm to themselves from their own or others' 'delightful' displays.

Draw your curtains, you're not a martyr.

Trez1510 · 03/12/2023 06:49

Precisely how does drawing my curtains assist me when getting to and from my car, or opening my front door to visitors etc.?
