How much clothing do you pack for a week away?

I know it varies according to what activities the holiday is geared around and what weather you're expecting, but just curious to get an idea of what other people pack for a week away.

I'm away at the moment and in trying to not over pack for this week I am dissatisfied because I have no 'nice' clothes with me for going out for dinner etc. But managed to get it right for sight seeing with lots of walking during the day.

Are you good at packing for holidays, and what amounts of clothes do you bring for X amount of days?

Obviously depends on the holiday. I generally don't change for dinner/evening, but might pack longer trousers or a fancier top for evenings - and wear the same things all week.

For a summer week in a hotel on the Med with the occasional dinner out I would pack:

2 x swimsuits
7 x knickers
2 x bras
4 x tops
1 x fancier top
1 x pyjamas
4 x shorts/skirt
1 x long trousers
1 x sandals
1 x crocs/walking shoes

and depending on time of year, a hoodie/sweatshirt/jumper or light jacket too.

Octavia64 · 01/12/2023 09:34

Depends if I'm going ski-ing or sunbathing.

Generally, assuming no washing machine

8x sets of underwear and socks
Several tops (usually all themed around a colour)
A few trousers (picked to go with the tops)
Thin waterproof/or bigger coat depending on weather
Jumpers
Warm clothes for if I get cold (I'm disabled and get cold easily)

IamSmarticus · 01/12/2023 09:39

I don't pack by saying 'Oh well I think I will need 8 x t-shirts, 4 x pairs of shorts..' I do it by making a spreadsheet/list and writing down the days/nights that I will be there. Then plan what I will wear at each of those times and pack them!

It isn't as rigid as I must wear the pink shorts and white t-shirt on Monday, obviously I can change my mind depending how I feel but at least I know I have enough outfits etc.

Then depending on the time of year, I might also include a hoodie/jacket/cardigan.

CharityShopChic · 01/12/2023 09:41

I cannot imagine making a spreadsheet and planning my wardrobe to that degree. But then again I am not really that fussy about what I wear, not bothered about "matching" or whatever.

PearTreeBoat · 01/12/2023 09:42

I certainly don’t pack lightly! So for 7 days general holiday I’d pack:

14 sets of underwear
2 jeans
2 trousers
5 daytime dresses
3 evening type dresses
5 daytime tops
5 evening type tops
3 sets of swimwear
2 sandals (day time)
1 pair trainer/pumps
2 pairs of flip flops
2 pairs heels
2 pj’s
2 beach towels

i like to have a choice of what to wear even when I’m away. I’ve done my time of only taking what can fit in my back pack so these days I’m very much the opposite!!

JenniferJupiterVenusandMars · 01/12/2023 09:55

Nor me @CharityShopChic 😊
I’m away next week in this country, self catering, walking and wandering around towns. There’s a washing machine in the cottage.
am taking a medium sized suitcase with:
4 sets underwear
7 pairs socks
pyjamas, slippers
3 fleece tops
3 long sleeve tee shirts
3 pairs jeans/walking trousers
A Thermal vest and long Johns
Cords/shirt/wooly jumper for pub meal
walking boots and Dubarry boots
Walking jacket and warm waterproof coat.
toiletries
Hopefully that should cover it!

Heyhoherewegoagain · 01/12/2023 09:57

@PearTreeBoat what do you do that you take 14 sets of underwear for 7 days? (Genuine question)

GimpMasksAndWagonWheels · 01/12/2023 09:58

Mine's not quite a spreadsheet but I do list out things for the week. Not day by day, but I might say, ok.. (bikinis & pool stuff aside), if I go for dinner, what am I going to wear. If I go for a full day excursion what am I going to wear... if I'm spending all my days in swimwear, do I need something more appropriate for going down for breakfast.

Basically just thinking of all the 'settings' and making sure there's something I can wear. (It's def not a new outfit each time though, it'll be things that can mix & match, and get re-worn)

GimpMasksAndWagonWheels · 01/12/2023 09:59

And for underwear I seemingly think I'm going to wet or soil myself every single day as I seem to pack far too many 'just in case' knickers 😂😂

PearTreeBoat · 01/12/2023 10:03

@Heyhoherewegoagain shower twice a day

Catza · 01/12/2023 10:04

Absolute minimum.
Two pairs of bottoms, 4 tops plus two changes of seasonal clothes (sweaters for winter, shorts and swimsuits for summer). A pair of walking shoes and a pair of dress shoes.
Spent a month in Spain and four months in Japan with just a carry on size suitcase (although, access to washing machine at both locations).

JustFrustrated · 01/12/2023 11:18

Assuming a week in the sun

1 pair trainers
1 pair flip flops/sliders for by the pool
1 pair "nice" shoes
4 bikinis
12 underwear sets
4 nice outfits.
7 day outfits -broken down into tops and bottoms and dresses, which are still "nice" for going into town just not "dinner out" nice.

I'm like a Pp in that I'll have a spreadsheet to make sure I pack everything, and that the kids have packed everything.

Too many times of going away and realising Ive forgotten a charger etc. and then having to buy stuff when I'm there.

It's not that I'm fussy, more that it acts as a sort of checklist and makes sure I don't foget to pack anything! Nothing worse than getting to my destination and finding I've forgotten my favourite dress, or a particular top that I wear with particular bottoms. It also reminds me of certain items of holiday clothing that I might have forgotten I own because they are packed away somewhere (yes, I do have clothes that I only wear on holiday).

Plus, I do like a nice spreadsheet Grin

egowise · 01/12/2023 11:43

Far too much. I don't have a system, I just throw in what I think I will want to wear.

ManateeFair · 01/12/2023 11:59

As you say, depends where I'm going. If it's somewhere in the UK or a similarly unpredictable climate, I end up taking a lot more than I do if I'm going somewhere hot.

I went somewhere on the Med in October, and I think this is pretty much what I took:

  • Cropped chino-style trousers
  • A pair of jeans
  • Two or three vest tops/t-shirts
  • A pair of capri leggings
  • Two oversize short-sleeve shirts/tops that I could wear over the leggings
  • A denim jacket (only time I actually needed it was on the plane!)
  • Two summer jumpsuits
  • A pair of loose fitting dungaree shorts
  • Four dresses that were casual enough for day time but also nice enough to go to a restaurant in the evening
  • Two dresses that were a bit smarter
  • Leather Converse
  • Birkenstock sandals (black patent Arizonas which are OK to wear with a dress in the evening)
  • Flip-flops mostly just to wear at our accommodation
  • Knickers, trainer socks, bras, chub-rub shorts in case of sweaty thigh issues

Holiday was a mix of relaxing at our accommodation, sightseeing, exploring etc. Was by the sea but we weren't swimming/sunbathing so didn't take swimwear.

Verv · 01/12/2023 12:36

I tend to go away more in winter as I love the cold.
Im also a consummate over-packer so for a week -

7 jeans
7 hoodies/jumpers/etc
7 long sleeve tops for under which can double as pj tops because god forbid overpacking.
7 socks
4 pj bottoms
4 bras
20 pants - 2 each day - 4 spares in case of zombie apocalypse, never been required once but I dont learn.
3 footwear - Uggs / winter boots / sneakers
2 coats - 1 waterproof 1 quilted

Fortunately im very casual so out for dinner outfit is exactly the same as out for a wander

Lyricallie · 01/12/2023 12:50

I’m also in team spreadsheet, however I mainly use it as a checklist and then I can reuse it for future trips just edit the quantity of outfits. I don’t say oh I must wear this on Tuesday, “more nice dress for meal on Tuesday” so I know to pack a dress for that day in addition to day clothes e.g. leggings and a top.

I also pack extra underwear in case I work out whilst away or have an extra shower during the day.

bellac11 · 01/12/2023 13:00

I take tons but not as much as OH

I like shoes to go with different outfits, just got back from a holiday where I had 5 pairs with me (wearing one pair obviously).

I like to have day time clothes, going out clothes and sitting around the apartment clothes

I like to have different coats and jackets to go with different things, it was harder this time because obviously its winter so I needed waterproof things as well as warm things.

I always book somewhere with a washing machine and ironing board but have learned that they dont always work, as in on this occasion unfortunately

I take 7 knickers and 3 bras (for a week)

Palava57 · 01/12/2023 13:03

I usually travel for 2 weeks with just a carry on bag and small rucksack. It’s better with a washing machine but I used to manage without. I make sure that each bottom half can go with 2-3 tops so I don’t feel I’m wearing the same thing all the time. And include one smart dress though end up not wearing it much especially as husband never dresses up!
My lists much as some of those above - with footwear I prioritise comfort ie walking sandals, trainers and flip flops. Nice sandals don’t justify the space as can only use when no walking involved. I can layer 3-4 items if it’s cold. Packing cubes recently acquired might enable me to take a little more 😊

thedamnseason · 01/12/2023 13:03

I will generally take all of my clothes and accessories including all the new things I insisted I needed for the trip.

The tiny amounts other people pack make me anxious. What if there's a coffee or salsa incident and there's no spare top or 6? Unthinkable.

Heyhoherewegoagain · 01/12/2023 09:57

@PearTreeBoat what do you do that you take 14 sets of underwear for 7 days? (Genuine question)

I take two pairs of pants a day if abroad. I shower in the morning as I get sweaty at night then in the evening to get off sun cream etc. I would never put worn pants on after a shower. I might not wear them all if I’ve been just in a swimsuit but often I wear shorts next to the pool with a bikini top.

7 pairs of jeans! I'd take one with me for a week and maybe one other trousers/dress. 4 or 5 tops, one PJs. One jumper for travelling, one in the case.
No swimming stuff.
Try to use the same shoes for everything.

bellac11 · 01/12/2023 13:15

You shouldnt wear the same shoes day in day out, particularly with heavy wear like walking around cities.

MonsteraMama · 01/12/2023 13:17

Too much, always.

My younger sister is an absolute wizard at packing light, she can somehow go away for a week on hand luggage. She's capable of putting together a capsule wardrobe that takes up almost no space and let's her have a different outfit every day. She's a marvel.

I'm hopeless at it so following with interest to see if anyone has any tricks!

turkeyboots · 01/12/2023 13:17

I always pack too much. Outfit for each day, re wearing jeans at least 2 plus top or dresses for evening. And a spare jumper.
I will always come home with at least 2 unworn outfits.
