How much clothing do you pack for a week away?

I know it varies according to what activities the holiday is geared around and what weather you're expecting, but just curious to get an idea of what other people pack for a week away.

I'm away at the moment and in trying to not over pack for this week I am dissatisfied because I have no 'nice' clothes with me for going out for dinner etc. But managed to get it right for sight seeing with lots of walking during the day.

Are you good at packing for holidays, and what amounts of clothes do you bring for X amount of days?

Pack for a weekend and that should cover everything you need. Add a few more of underwear, socks and t-shirts.

bellac11 · 01/12/2023 13:22

I forgot the sock issue, I need a few pairs to wear around the apartment to keep my feet warm, different socks for different shoes. I end up with quite a lot of socks.

OH takes shower slippers and normal slippers.

2 bottoms, linen trousers/jeans then shorts/skirt
1-2 pairs shoes - boots and trainers or sandals and trainers
5 tops. With 2 bottoms that gives 10 outfits
1 camisole for sleeping, 2 bras inc. 1 sport, enough underwear, 1 swimsuit, maybe 1 pair thin leggings
Hat
Jacket/scarf if needed

Very little, I went away with a girl friend and she took a different dress for every evening! We weren't going anywhere posh or formal and were back in our room by 9.30pm so hardly needed a different outfit each evening!

bellac11 · 01/12/2023 13:35

Its nice to get dressed up on holiday, its about the only time I have to use nice clothes

You can always spot the british tourist, rocking up in jeans, walking shoes and a kagoul for an evening meal, where everyone else is dressed nicely

I pack like I'm planning to shit myself several times a day.

Too much, always.

My younger sister is an absolute wizard at packing light, she can somehow go away for a week on hand luggage. She's capable of putting together a capsule wardrobe that takes up almost no space and let's her have a different outfit every day. She's a marvel.

I'm hopeless at it so following with interest to see if anyone has any tricks!

Choose either tops or bottoms as neutral, for example on a recent trip I took a pair of black trousers, a khaki skirt and 5 tops with different colours and prints, that way everything matches. Shoes, jacket and bag in neutral colours.

You can do also patterned or brightly coloured bottoms, then black tees and white button for example. I don't bother with dresses anymore for travel, they take up space for not many wearings.

It depends very much where you are going.
For a city break, I'd go smarter, certainly as far as evening options are concerned, so a decent coat or jacket and a nice dress /silk shirt. I find most cities are more dressy than London, where I live, and I have felt a bit scruffy in the past on holiday, so always make sure I have at least one nice outfit. I will always have red lipstick and statement earrings to hand to assist with that.
If I'm in UK, then jeans and trainers, maybe a slightly nicer top or jumper for eating out, but if I'm away for a less than a week I try to take hand luggage only. I try to squeeze in straighteners as it's a quick way to make my hair look OK, so then another pair of jeans, a cashmere jumper or 2, or shirts if it's warmer, a hoody, a scarf, a couple of under tshirts, a nightdress, pants for everyday and 2 bras, trainers and DMs. Maybe leggings which can go under a long dress or with the big hoody for relaxing in. Flipflops if its not winter, crocs or slippers if it is. Sunglasses, wristwarmers, and a small hat/beanie in my pocket for windy/rainy days.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/12/2023 13:56

Well if you know you're going to be eating out, you take clothes you'll want to wear to eat out in - that's the mistake. A couple of dresses rolled up don't take up space or weigh much but you need to be careful with shoes - wear the bulkiest ones on the plane then pack a couple of pairs that you can walk around in and also go out in the evening with.

I have lists honed over many holidays, for different types of trips, for example my last two holidays have been a hiking holiday in a hot country, then a city break in a Nordic country so very cold, but we then only went for 4 days. Both times were hand luggage only (rucksack and wheelie case) and both times I came back with clothes I didn't wear. But I generally wear most tops twice and bottoms 3/4 times. If you're eating out in the evening, only wearing clothes for a few hours and don't drop food on yourself, you can wear each dress for 3 evenings easily. But I think about what I expect to be doing and pack a few items for each.

I am a whizz at packing light, really organised... and then for about 2-3 days prior to actually leaving, I keep going "oooh I love that top, I'll just throw that in," or "oh but those sandals are a bit fancier than the others, we've got room in the case, I'll shove them in too" etc 😂 so I end up with too much.

But the initial list (for a week in the sun) goes:

7 x knickers
2 x bras
2 x swimsuits
2 x shorts/skirts
5 x tops
2 x nicer dresses/jumpsuits
1 x beach cover up/kaftan etc
1 x flip flops
1 x nicer sandals
1 x socks

Loose trousers (or leggings), long sleeved top, trainers, socks and hoodie are worn on the plane.
Shorts, skirts, tops must all be suitable for either beach or restaurant.
Take jewellery to "dress up" the casual outfits if needed.

JaninaDuszejko · 01/12/2023 14:07

I plan my outfits and take 1 outfit per day so e.g. for somewhere warm I'd wear comfortable travelling clothes and pack 6 dresses and 3 pairs of sandals. We always go self catering so there is the option to wash clothes though. We do city breaks with lots of sightseeing.

On the other hand my husband is a horrendous overpacker, e.g. he wanted to take 3 jumpers and a winter coat to Malaga in October (it was mid 20s everyday we were there). He sulked when I told him to leave his coat in the boot of the car in Scotland and that it wouldn't kill him to walk 100m outside without a jacket on a mild autumn day.

7 pairs of jeans! I'd take one with me for a week and maybe one other trousers/dress. 4 or 5 tops, one PJs. One jumper for travelling, one in the case.
No swimming stuff.
Try to use the same shoes for everything.

Yeah, sometimes I only need 4 pairs, but others they can get wet/muddy daily.
Theyre all I wear so a clean pair every day as required.

bellac11 · 01/12/2023 14:38

Yes they tend to get all splattered up the back of the leg and round the ankle. Not a good look
