Is DP BU to keep a tv Amazon sent him in error?

Tadpolle · 30/11/2023 20:37

It looks from the weight label on the big box the tv came in, and the email notification, Amazon think they've delivered some cheap small batteries he ordered.

But the batteries came yesterday and today it's a big tv worth about £450. He didn't order or pay for it.

His current plan is to keep it intact in packaging for a few weeks and if nothing happens, use it as our tv.

Had anything like this happened to you? Is this technically a crime? Would Amazon even care given then scale of the operation and the time of year? I've been told by them not to bother returning erroneous deliveries before. Is DP being U to keep it?

what A mix up someone’s made. Can he talk to customer services

KarmenPQZ · 30/11/2023 20:42

It’ll surely be a scam someone bought after hacking his account and they failed to intercept it. I’d be confident that Amazon doesn’t deliver large valuable items by mistake and ultimately he will get charged for it. Keep it in the box for a few weeks for sure before deciding

Ragwort · 30/11/2023 20:42

Yes. Morally he knows he hasn't paid for it ... can he contact customer service & ask them to collect it?

KarmenPQZ · 30/11/2023 20:43

(We’ve had a fancy apple lap top delivered to us this way and we did get charged for it and returned it in tact in its box)

whogivesacarrot · 30/11/2023 20:43

I suggest he contacts Amazon it’s highly likely they’ll tell him to keep it anyway

This.

Every time I've had something miss-delivered by Amazon they've ended up telling me to keep it. If even the packing labels are wrong they won't want to be bothered trying to get it back into their computer system. But by having that conversation with them (I always use their online chat system so I have a record) you're covered if anything gets questioned down the line.

CustardySergeant · 30/11/2023 20:50

Personally I would contact Amazon and tell them. As to whether keeping it would technically be a crime, I don't know, but it wouldn't be the moral thing to do, would it? It's down to whether you care about that.

TrishTrix · 30/11/2023 20:55

It's unsolicited goods. I think you can keep it legitimately.

Mind you when it happened to me (huge order of stamps sent by Royal Mail) which I notified them about and they did nothing in response to but then threatened me with court action months later.

In the end I bribed my lawyer friend to write a cease and desist letter reminding them of their obligations under consumer law.

I'd tell DP to stick to his plan.

Tadpolle · 30/11/2023 21:03

Thanks for your perspectives. Interesting about the hack/ scam possibility but he's not had the money go out of his account nor is it showing on his Amazon account.

I've heard similar before about it being too much trouble to get returns back on their system and they tell you just to keep mistakenly sent things.

for a TV I think he should come clean. If some big company like Amazon sent me a pair of socks by mistake I’d keep it, but not a £450 TV. He should cough up.

gamerchick · 30/11/2023 21:07

I don't think I could. Too honest. I'd contact Amazon and see what they say.

OdeToBarney · 30/11/2023 21:12

I'd contact Amazon. It would be dishonest not to do so, and I could be struck off for dishonesty. Not worth it for a TV. Plus I am too honest, the guilt would get me!

Has Amazon's computer system had a bad day today? I woke up to a notification thanking me for the return of a set of paints I bought 1.5 weeks ago. I am happy with them and have not requested a refund let alone returned the product. I received a refund (£5.09) this afternoon. I've been too busy to log in or chase this up yet.

I’m not😂, I’d keep it. As you said keep it in the box for a few weeks to see if you get charged and if not consider it an early Xmas gift.

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 01/12/2023 07:55

Also woken up to an £8.95 refund from Hotel Chocolat from a purchase I made last Thursday evening. Again, I've not requested this/taken anything back/made a complaint...

I do remember that my card declined on the first try as I had reached my contactless limit, declined on the second time I put a pin in, with no reason given in my app, and then it went through on the third attempt using a pin.

This was the Thursday before Black Friday, although not a BF offer.

What's going on?

Monzo.

Dipsomaniax · 01/12/2023 08:02

I got a very expensive Nespresso coffee machine delivered once (alongside the actual coffee I'd ordered). I rang them, they were so uninterested and I had to repackage the machine and wait in for the day for them to collect it.

I didn't even get an acknowledgement: a "got that!" or "thanks!" For my efforts.

I wouldn't have kept it but might have donated it instead had I realised they really weren't bothered about missing stock.

lap90 · 01/12/2023 08:06

Ah, that old trick.

Jokes aside, why did you accept the delivery?

Honestly i would have to say something. While amazon have told me many times to keep things im not sure if they'd say the same about a TV

If you are in any sort of professional body and are pursued through the courts for dishonesty could you lose your registration?

I also judge people on their integrity

anonuser63732 · 02/12/2023 02:22

Just start a conversation with their online chat saying you've had a box delivered but you didn't order anything and that you don't know what it is because you didn't open it. They might tell you not to bother returning it 😆

romdowa · 02/12/2023 03:53

Personally I'd say nothing, wait and see if they get on to you and then have a new TV for Christmas.

Momtotwokids · 02/12/2023 04:18

All these people say just keep Amazon won't care. Don't be so sure. I bought a travel bag and it was ripped when I got it delivered. They wanted it back before sending me a new $15.00 one.

More fool you! I wouldn't have waited in. If they wanted it back they could come and collect at my convenience!
