To have only bought for him

My adult son lives with his girlfriend of 5 years and her two children, 10 and 7. I went round earlier to drop off an advent calendar for my son. I felt it was a little frosty. Was I unreasonable to have only bought for him?

Eat the chocolate in front of the children!

Sorry, I thought we were sharing mean ideas...

What adult wants an advent calendar from Mummy? Cringe.

Perhaps it’s a family tradition but how mean to leave two innocent kids out if it.
Regardless of their (non) relationship to you, how could you do that?

I am most definitely an adult and I expect an advent calendar from my mum every year 🤣 (she also buys for my kids just FYI)

If you are mean to the people he loves and chooses to live with you have only your self to blame if the invites dry up. Catch on to yourself and buy the DC a little gift for Xmas and some flowers for his partner.

lunar1 · 28/11/2023 20:13

Your son is probably embarrassed by your behaviour. He's accepted his partner and her children into his life, and you can't spare a couple of quid to get them an advent calendar.

If he thinks you are making him choose, I very much doubt you will win.

TomatoSandwiches · 28/11/2023 20:14

Does your adult son buy you a Christmas gift?

AmazingSnakeHead · 28/11/2023 20:14

Is this a joke? You have known these little children sicne they were two and five, and buy an adult Chocolate but none for them? Beyond weird.

CanIPutTheTreeUpYet · 28/11/2023 20:15

My teenage son has his girlfriend around a few times a week. She doesn't know it yet, but she's got four presents from me. My other teenager is mostly round at his girlfriends house. She's also getting presents. I couldn't just totally ignore their existence when my DC like them.... Is this even for real 🤔🤨

Pineapplewaves · 28/11/2023 20:16

I think you should have asked if the DC had advent calendars already (it used to really annoy me when I got calendars for DC and MIL turned up with the exact same ones and presented them before me).

If plans had already been made for calendars for her DC you could have got his partner one too.

Yes some adults do have and like an advent calendar - everyone has one in our house, kids and adults!

tescocreditcard · 28/11/2023 20:16

Sure you did!

So many strange threads tonight. What is going on?

Full moon?

Full moon?

😄😄😄

Morechocmorechoc · 28/11/2023 20:18

My mum gave me one but not dh or kids. She knows I get the kids so why would she. Its nice she still gets me one, I'm still her daughter.

Meowandthen · 28/11/2023 20:19

7% think this is reasonable? Unkind people.

Friendfoe1 · 28/11/2023 20:20

I find that an odd thing to do: I would have been taking advent calendars for both kids and nothing for the adults.

Ladybughello · 28/11/2023 20:20

You gave your adult son an advent calendar, rather than his (essentially) step-children that he lives with? 🤯🤯🤯And the family was only a “bit frosty”?

FreshWinterMorning · 28/11/2023 20:22

Oooh no, that's a pretty awful thing to do @Usersnoozerfuzer

DingleDongle80 · 28/11/2023 20:22

This sends a loud and clear message to your son that you don't accept his partner or her children as your family.

Is that the message you wanted to send?

In your shoes, I'd have bought the kiddies something. Doesn't need to cost much!

CarrotCake01 · 28/11/2023 20:25

I'm not sure if this is a wind up.... feels like a wind up....

In summary, yes. That's very weird. YABU.

Usersnoozerfuzer · 28/11/2023 20:27

Thanks everyone. This is a reverse, I’m the gf in the situation. I was really hoping you’d all tell me I was being unreasonable and perhaps she doesn’t dislike me!

YABU but not as U as posters saying that adults don’t get chocolate advent calendars! My advent calendar from my mum arrived in the post this morning, along with a much bigger and better one for my partner who’s had a tough year. I was even happier to see him being obviously touched by the little gesture of care than to get my own month’s supply of morning chocolates. We’re a lot closer to 40 than to 30. All adults should get advent calendars in my opinion!

edit - cross posted with the big reveal! Hope your partner gets you a good advent calendar!

LakeTiticaca · 28/11/2023 20:29

How old is your son, 6?
Seems a bit petty to buy for an adult and leave 2 kids looking on.
What a tightwad!!

At what point do you get to be the adult?

itsanewday23 · 28/11/2023 20:31

Why are you buying your adult son a advent calender

Ah, sorry to hear that. You're not unreasonable for feeling that way...I'd be really disappointed in my partner's Mum for doing this.
