Please help me find quiet beaches for UK holiday in the summer holiday

I'm getting stuck and hoping for some inspiration/help. My daughter is autistic and hates busy places but loves going to the beach. Every year we go on a UK cottage beach holiday near Norfolk, but we are keen to try somewhere different as my other children are getting bored of this.
Any suggestions of nice quiet beaches somewhere that is nice for a holiday. We have to go in August so many places are v busy. We live in Milton Keynes and don't want to travel more than 3/4 hours ideally. Thanks for any suggestions 😊.

Would you consider Ireland OP, if ferry is doable for you? Some amazing and quiet beaches there, on both sides of the border.

How about Southsea? It’s a pebble beach and you can see the Isle of Wight (which you could also do - it’s less than an hour on the hovercraft). The main stretch can get fairly busy when the weather is warm but further along towards Eastney is very quiet. Water is warm and safe (relatively speaking). It’s great for paddleboarding. It doesn’t have the great views of Northumberland but it does have lots of nice things to see, do including the amazing D Day exhibition, and the nearby Mary Rose Museum, Gunwharf if you like a bit of shopping and café society, and there’s even a traditional rickety funfair and pier if you want to venture into the main part of the seafront.

@Airdustmoon shhhhh! 🤫

@TrashedSofa we might be able to manage Ireland - can you suggest any good places suitable? Thanks

@PieAndLattes Southsea sounds good. I like the idea of a day trip to isle of wight.

Isle of Wight is another option - lots of beaches and things to do, plus going on the ferry adds an extra element.

Northumberland, especially Beadnell is lovely safe beach for children. We go most years & even older kid love it. We have shortie wetsuits to swim properly & do paddleboarding.

Donegal is fantastic, especially if you're able to walk a bit. Do you need to be able to park right next to the beach?

In NI, you could try Cushendall. Also there are lake options inland in Fermanagh, if that would work.

Gorleston on Sea near Great Yarmouth? (you might already have been here if your usually in Norfolk but...)the beach is beautiful ( I think award Winning) but there's only a couple of fish and chip shops 1 arcade and no massive car parks so I found it relatively quiet.

MrsSkylerWhite · 29/11/2023 10:39

Lots of wonderful, empty beaches in the Scottish Highlands and Islands.

The Northumberland beaches are similar to the North Norfolk beaches OP. Enormous and utterly beautiful. You can visit a different beach every day, there are lots of castles too. Worth the drive.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 06/04/2024 07:27

Northumberland or Pembrokeshire

We were in Pembrokeshire last year on August bank holiday and Pendene sands was incredibly quiet, another beach the name of which escapes me there was us and three dog walkers. All huge beautiful beaches.

VestaTilley · 06/04/2024 07:30

Sussex and Dorset far too busy nowadays. You need Northumberland.

sofasofa42 · 06/04/2024 07:41

Google Angmering- on- sea. Pebble beaches though, always quiet. No one seems to have discovered it but I grew up there and lots of happy memories on the beach during the summer . Surrounding countryside is lovely as well, and close to Arundel. Stay away from Worthing though and Littlehampton- this beach sits between them .

bozzabollix · 06/04/2024 07:50

You’ve asked about Kent. It can be busy but there is the odd quiet place. We stayed in Broadstairs and while the main beach was busy the one around the corner, below the Eastern Esplanade was really quiet. It’s got a lot of rock pools as well as sand, it’s gorgeous. Romney Marsh is quiet and Greatstone is a beautiful sandy beach and never truly crowded. Avoid Camber like the plague though. It is heaving.

It is rammed in Dorset, having been there and done that. Way more popular than Kent.

I’ve added the picture of the Broadstairs beach.

There are some lovely long beaches in Northumberland. Holy Island is great as long as you stay on the island, as once the causeway floods the island is empty apart from those staying in the village. The main beach is still quite busy, but if you walk around the island you find enormous beaches, practically empty apart from a couple of seals. As long as everyone's mobility is good.
I always find, whether we visit Devon, Northumberland, Wales, if the beach looks long, and the facilities are limited, just walk a few minutes away from the car park - perhaps half an hour - and you'll have a quiet time.

downsizedilemma · 07/04/2024 12:53

If you are thinking about going to France, the Eurotunnel could work well for your DD. You just drive the car onto the train, and then all sit in the car for the journey (about half an hour). It's pretty peaceful.

Daftasabroom · 07/04/2024 12:55

@ispendmytimecompletingforms south east Cornwall, Whitsand bay is on overlooked gem.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 07/04/2024 12:56

As long as you avoid Torquay, Weymouth, Bournemouth and West Wittering, you should be fine.

Polyethyl · 07/04/2024 13:01

Poppit Sands, Pembrokeshire and Newport Sands, Pembrokeshire are big sandy beaches. They won't be empty in August, but much emptier than Broadstairs or Cornwall!

Pwllgwaelod Beach, Pembrokeshire is a small sandy cove beach with a pub. Usually quite quiet.

BadgerFace · 07/04/2024 13:18

I’d recommend Broad Haven South beach in Pembrokeshire, this is a photo of how busy it was in mid-July. Glorious. We stayed at Bluestone which has lots of great activities onsite.

Sounds like Northumberland might be very busy this year! I tend to keep the good places under my hat.

BadgerFace · 07/04/2024 14:05

Northern France we’ve also found quiet the last week of August. This is Deauville beach last year. We stayed in a great house with a pool in Cornville-sur-Risle and did a day trip to this beach.

We have done a lot of driving holidays around the UK (my eldest is autistic and prefers to drive) and northern France.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 07/04/2024 14:23

Any beach in Kent is going to be shingle not sand. Another vote for Pembrokeshire and Cardigan Bay here (esp. Mwnt).

Gingernurt88 · 07/04/2024 14:28

Anglesey is relatively quiet during summer holidays well definitely compared to Cornwall and Devon anyway.
