Amazon at it again.

I live in a dodgy area, on a publically accessible road, with enough foot traffic for there to be a worry, but not enough for there to be a constant stream of oversight of my house iyswim.

Amazon delivered today. To my front porch, in plain sight of everyone passing, despite there being instructions that if I'm not there it needs to be dropped into the back garden, out of sight. And left.

Not only could the Christmas gifts for my children have been stolen (one was not even packaged properly, so it was easy to see what it was). It would also have been obvious to anyone else that I wasn't at home at the time.

Why not
-leave it in my safe place
-drop if off at a neighbour's?

AIBU? No complaints procedure that I can see, the thumbs-down button just gets me back to my orders.

They're pretty busy at this time of the year.
Maybe get a ring doorbell as a deterrent.

OnlyFannys · 27/11/2023 17:52

You can contact them on the app pretty easily bit tbh if things go missing with amazon they never seem to quibble about refunding or replacing

DaughterNo2 · 27/11/2023 17:53

There is a chat facility. 🤷‍♀️ I’ve complained about the opposite tbh, where I’ve had parcels thrown over a 6ft gate rather than being left in my ‘safe place’

Lilibert456 · 27/11/2023 17:54

Some delivery drivers can't be bothered. I know they are busy. You should complain to Amazon. If you don't complain it will continue.

hedgehoglurker · 27/11/2023 17:55

You got the delivery safely? Why complain if nothing bad happened?

ShowOfHands · 27/11/2023 17:56

I've just had the same with Yodel, except I don't have a front porch so they left it on the doorstep, in the pouring rain. The safe place is a shed 5ft away from the front door and open at all times (nothing in there) or the neighbour who was in at the time.

I had a message at work yesterday saying "left in front porch". Surprising considering I didn't have a front porch when I left for work.

Customer service couldn't have cared less.

More by luck than judgement. Her specific instructions were ignored.

MereDintofPandiculation · 27/11/2023 17:58

It's difficult to navigate through the Amazon contact pages to a phone no, but googling Amazon phone gives numbers you can try.

Note that if they'd dropped it in your back garden and was stolen from there, or got damaged in the drop, then you'd have no come-back because they would have delivered as instructed.

pacora · 27/11/2023 18:00

I've had this a couple of times lately. I see them just dumping the stuff on our doormat without even ringing our bell. I've twice now complained via their website...it's not too onerous and you do get quite good service when you get through. The latest one (2 weeks ago) I was given a £10 gift card or whatever it is on my Amazon account. They feed it back to the logistics manager too. So. It is worth doing.

Doesn't make a difference. I have one and have the exact same issue as the OP!

CasperGutman · 27/11/2023 18:04

I love it when couriers leave parcels in my porch without my asking them to. 99.9% of the time I get the parcel just fine without any annoying trips to the depot. 0.1% of the time the item goes missing and it's the delivery company's fault, as they left the item in an insecure location of their own initiative.

You're even better off than this, because you explicitly instructed them NOT to leave anything there, so there can be no doubt at all as to who's paying if something goes missing.

Tanaria · 27/11/2023 18:17

To be clear, it wasn't left IN a porch; it was left in front of my (public) front door!

I have not been able to locate a complaint facility, but will try again when the kids are in bed. It's annoying that it would have been so easy to steal (and it left my house vulnerable, as I said, because it was clear no one was in).

I've been burgled before, so am probably extra sensitive to the latter.

It pisses me right off when they do this. Sometimes they deliver early and I'm away

SutWytTi · 27/11/2023 18:23

YABU to use Amazon and then moan.

The company is trashing the high street, pays shit wages - do you really expect them to care about you as a customer?

Change supplier wherever possible.

Tanaria · 27/11/2023 18:24

I've never had an issue before; either I've been in when they dropped it at the door and dashed, or they left it in my garden as instructed.

I was just so bloody annoyed at this, though.

For what it's worth, I use small, local businesses where I can.

Two particular items were from Japan, though, and I needed a reliable seller who'd deliver within good time for the holiday.

Not just Amazon. They all do this and it is really annoying. I have a large parcel box under my front window with a PARCEL BOX sign on it. It’s very clear, and literally two metres from my front door. Still I get parcels dumped on my doorstep, in full view of the road, and they don’t bother ringing the doorbell. Sometimes I’ve found soggy parcels there when I’ve got the milk in on a morning, that have clearly been sitting there all night.

zurala · 27/11/2023 18:27

YANBU but a parcel on your doorstep doesn't indicate you aren't in. Both DH and I work from home and it is very rare that there's no one home yet or parcels are always left on the doorstep without so much as a knock on the door. Sometimes they are there for hours and get really wet if it's raining. It's infuriating. It takes two seconds to knock the door before walking off!

When you are on the amazon webpage, scroll down to the bottom where all the links are, click on the 'customer service' link and you will be able to contact amazon. I've always found them to be really helpful with any issues.

Nothing was nicked though, was it.
Perhaps people are more honest than you thought.

I'll be sure to tell my house and car insurers just that and I'll be looking forward to a massive discount next year!

As a deterrent to people thinking about stealing parcels, not to stop the delivery company leaving them on the doorstep.

justmyluck1234 · 27/11/2023 18:48

Some of them are completely useless... they constantly deliver to the wrong number in my area... they somehow delivered to a number 12 the other day photo taken and everything which isn't even close to my door number

RetinolStings · 27/11/2023 18:49

Order things to be delivered to a locker if you aren’t going to be in?
It must drive them mad to be hunting around where to leave stuff if people aren’t in.

minipie · 27/11/2023 18:51

This happens to me almost every delivery. We have a covered (but fully open) porch and it gets left there. Not had anything walk yet🤞but it’s only a matter of time.

The worst are the ones who leave it in the porch without even bothering to ring the bell - I was in so know they didn’t!! Guess it costs them an extra 30 sec to ring the bell and wait for it to be answered - but if they don’t ring it I don’t know there’s a parcel sitting there.

To be fair I think most delivery drivers are paid appallingly so it’s the company you should have beef with not the driver.
