M and S charging for carriers

Sausagenbacon · 27/11/2023 17:28

AIBU to find it cheeky of m&s to charge 10p for a paper carrier bag when I've just spent £50 on a dress? Especially as I got caught in the rain and it disintegrated.
I can understand why you would charge for a plastic bag, but this is ridiculous.

I’m tired of this shit now. We are charged outrageous prices for food and clothing to have it either thrown at us or have to check it out ourselves and then pay for the privilege of a receptacle to carry it home in. If some of you knew what customer service used to be like thirty years ago you’d weep at the state of it. Environment my arse. Just follow the money.

To the person saying their fabric shopping bag handles were too long. The answer to that is to shorten them! Just cut them, take a piece out and then sew back together again - sorted!

It’s the law. Get over it. Take your own bag in future

When did this law come into force to charge for paper bags?

Grumpystripes · 27/11/2023 21:23

I don't actually kind the charge. I mind the fact that the M&S paper bags are seriously shit.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 27/11/2023 21:28

madeinmanc · 27/11/2023 18:08

It penalises people using public transport because we can't "put our shopping loose in the boot" or "keep a fabric tote in the car".

I don't have a car and use public transport. I keep a nylon reusable bag in my handbag. one which folds into a small pouch, for any completely unexpected/unplanned purchases. If going to somewhere I think I might buy things, I stick a cotton tote or two over my shoulder. If going for my weekly food shop I take a few cotton totes, with several folded up inside one. No need to a boot to put shopping in or a car to keep a tote in.

Primark don't and they use paper bags.

White Stuff don't, either.

ISeeTheLight · 27/11/2023 21:38

Worse, in our M&S you have to scan, fold and pack your clothes yourself. They've completely closed all tills (apart from one that's returns only). Disgusting. I did email them about it as you do get in fact a better service in Primark. Including a free paper bag.

Sausagenbacon · 27/11/2023 21:39

Well, I still think it's seriously taking the piss. .

My local M&S had paper ones only at 40p . I am b forgetful so often need to buy one but I really resent it. I’d love to know what they would do if I turned up work a plastic bag for life past it’s best and asked for a replacement . … how long is “ for life?”

CharityShopChic · 27/11/2023 19:13

In Scotland all bags are charged for, whatever they are made of. Even a paper bag from the Maccies drive through costs.

I can't understand though why people don't carry the small fold out bags in their bag. I have several.

Me too - I think there are at least 4 in my handbag at any one time. They fold up very small (even the big ones would fit in the pocket of a pair of jeans) and they're really strong.

I was quite surprised when I bought some jeans in White Stuff the other day and they'd put them in a paper carrier bag before I realised.

Daisies12 · 27/11/2023 21:42

YABU. Anything single use is terrible for the planet; paper or plastic. If you’re going shopping take a bag; pretty basic.

or maybe they are trying to force people to consume less and stop choking the planet.

Sidebeforeself · 27/11/2023 21:45

Yeah that’s M&Ss motivation whilst
flogging tons of sequins and glitter…

idontlikealdi · 27/11/2023 21:45

10p? It's 40p here...

FettleOfKish · 27/11/2023 21:46

10p! You don't know you're born. All bags in all shops are 70p where I live (outside of UK).

It certainly sharpens the mind in terms of remembering to have some in the car, and a little fold up tote in each bag / pocket.

They charged me 40p on Saturday too.

I take a spare bag in my handbag

Doubleespresso33 · 27/11/2023 21:49

Just don’t pay for the bags? I have never once paid for one

I've never been charged for a paper bag in Scotland. Got one just yesterday from a cafe - I did have a bag for life but didn't want to put pies just wrapped in paper in my bag as then my bag gets greasy.

Stop whining and bring your own next time. That's the whole point.

Slippery slope. They had to charge for plastic and now they charge for all.

also, my bags-for-life tend to be use once too.

Sidebeforeself · 27/11/2023 21:50

How can you not pay for one without stealing it? And all of those saying g “ take a bag” yes that’s fine when you remember but sometimes people forget. I have a bag mountain in my utility room! And still bloody forget

Ocani · 27/11/2023 21:51

Daisies12 · 27/11/2023 21:43

Yes. All shops are motivated by the desire to have people consuming less. It is key.

Sidebeforeself · 27/11/2023 21:52

I cannot believe that shops … the epitome of consumerism.. are motivated to charge us for bags to protect the planet
