To not take son to a&e with a suspected broken toe?

Ds was at a presentation today in a lovely social club. He leant on a tabletop which wasn't attached to the legs of the table and it fell off onto his foot. It's landed near the top of his little toe and the two next to which are now pretty bruised.
He's not bothered by it much but it is sore. He can wiggle all his toes and walk on his foot. He's had calpol and is being careful with it.
I'm not sure if it warrants a trip to a&e. Our local hospital doesn't have an a&e and I don't think the walk in centre will deal with broken digits.
The nearest a&e is half an hour away in a big town. I could ring 111 but every time I have used them in the past they just tell me to use a&e.
What would you do?

I'd probably take him early tomorrow morning to avoid the wait

TitInATrance · 25/11/2023 17:25

I’d try the walk in centre and expect them to be able to deal with it. I had a similar injury to one toe 2 months ago, ignored it and it hasn’t healed straight, still hurts from time to time; wouldn’t want that for a child.

Nw22 · 25/11/2023 17:27

I have broken my toes a couple of times. The onyl time I sought treatment was when the toe was clearly misaligned and needed to be reset

YouJustDoYou · 25/11/2023 17:27

NHS don;t do much for it now tbh. I broke a rib, couldn't drive, lift stuff, walk, etc, they couldn't give a shit. Unless we're literally at deaths door, NHS don't want to know.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/11/2023 17:28

I'd take him in the morning very first thing just to cover bases but unlikely they will do anything tbh.
How old is DS poor thing.

Teatrayderby · 25/11/2023 17:29

Does the walk in have an X-ray? Ours does so it's perfect for this kind of thing.

DisquietintheRanks · 25/11/2023 17:30

I wouldn't take him if he can wriggle his toes and walk and his foot isn't too swollen.

DingDongDenny · 25/11/2023 17:31

Have you taped it to the one next to it for support

He's 8. He's gone playing at his mates house so I've got his friend's mum keeping an eye on him. I'll check out the opening times for the walk in centre but I'm pretty sure x-ray only opens at 9.
I'm now second guessing myself! I know they can't do much but I'm wondering if it's worth doing so I can tell school if it is broken. I'm in work tomorrow but Dh can take him. He's supposedly at a ninja warrior party tomorrow too. He will be gutted if he can't go 😭

No I don't think that would work as it's about three toes 😪

If they're pointing in funny directions, a really alarming colour or still really sore after 3 days then go to the docs, otherwise don't bother. they'll just look at it and say yeah it's probably broken and send you home

ringoutsolsticebells · 25/11/2023 17:33

It's his big toe. Might need fixing. Take him

Pawprintsonthewindow · 25/11/2023 17:33

This is it. Cropped it down cause his toenails need cutting 🤣

What did you think they might do for a broken rib?

Singleandproud · 25/11/2023 17:34

Not much can be done for a broken bone in fingers and toes, however you want it xrayd to make sure no bone splinters are floating around and so that school accept he can't do PE for X amount of weeks

If your DH gets there for 9am hopefully he will get seen ASAP and he can perhaps make it to his party.
I would want him checked over just to check for any other kind of fracture that isn't obvious right now although moving all toes is a good sign he should be seen before school imo.
You don't want to risk there being a fracture/break and his injury being picked up by school and asking why you didn't have him looked at.

Mosaic123 · 25/11/2023 17:34

Probably best not to play football at his friend's house.

I would take him tomorrow just so you know if the toes are broken as both he and his school will take extra care.

Spidey66 · 25/11/2023 17:35

I'd take him to a walk in centre....possibly in the morning. They're also called Minor Injuries for a reason!

DisquietintheRanks · 25/11/2023 17:35

He's bruised his foot. What makes you think they're broken?

Jammydodger1981 · 25/11/2023 17:35

That could be a broken foot looking at the location of the bruise, it’s on his metatarsals. I’d take him in.

curaçao · 25/11/2023 17:35

no, only if its the big toe.i have broken toes loads of times as i suspect most people have.

TheHawkisHowling · 25/11/2023 17:35

I'd call 111 or do an online assessment and see what the advice is there.

The NHS staff are ridiculously overstretched which is partially why I'm hesitant to go in for something they can't 'fix'.

curaçao · 25/11/2023 17:36

that looks like the foot more than the toe

They'll be on his switch so no football involved. ♥️
