To think I shouldn’t have to stop my run to walk past a horse?

This has happened twice now. Out for a run and the horse riders have asked me to stop running while I go past their horse!!

I’ll put this in context- daughter rides, I used to ride. When passing a horse or pony I’ll go wide and slow, or stop and wait at a passing place on narrow roads (often while the riders amble up at a slow walk deep in conversation with their fellow riders, 3 abreast….and without a hint of thank you). When I’m out with our dog I’ll make sure she is on the lead while we pass. but being asked to stop and walk???

Maybe tell that to people calling each other wankers.

You do you.

Yes god forbid any joggers have to make any compromises for the world around them ever. It's an outrage!

Please don't tar us all with the same brush, I run and I like to think that I'm considerate to other road/trail users. Have also recently started running with my son and am teaching him to be considerate. Its a shame that we often don't get the same consideration in return (especially from groups of people who take up the whole path and leave us to go in the road, even though if they went 2 abreast we'd be able to pass).

So don’t preach about playgrounds to me 🤷🏻‍♀️

Why should OP give a shit about people’s safety when they don’t even have basic courtesy to say thank you.

Don't need to, you'll do it yourself.

You’re not making any sense, there’s no preaching in my post.

Off you pop.

Hippyhippybake · 25/11/2023 15:40

This is all so depressing, whatever happened to common courtesy? Of course you should not come running up behind a horse, not least because if it spooks badly you may end up badly injured.

Those people saying it’s the rider’s responsibility must have no idea about horses and how they behave.

sunglassesonthetable · 25/11/2023 15:42

Give it a rest @wesurecouldstandgladioli

Lots of posters on here arguing for a modicum of give and take and basic compromise when you share the environment with others.

Horses are not as predictable as cars. Doesn't mean they should not be ridden in public.

You should be aware of everyone's safety even people who might not say thank you.

You need to be conscious of everyone’s safety and have patience.

All this anger isn’t going to help you. Relax.

which anger? 😂

You’re so obsessed, it must be anger.

Give it a rest now maybe?

Conkered · 25/11/2023 15:51

<sigh>

blacksax · 25/11/2023 15:53

There's no point in saying that people with potentially skittish horses should stay on private land. What private land? You clearly have no idea of how little of it there is, and that it is so fragmented it can only be accessed via bridle paths and public roads.

A horse is a prey species and a dog is a predator species. Of course horses could be spooked by someone with a dog running towards them, it is ingrained in their DNA to be scared of fast-moving predators.

Just be considerate.

sunglassesonthetable · 25/11/2023 15:56

What like

" horse wankers who need a good throwing of their horse...."

type of anger @wesurecouldstandgladioli ?

😂

No, that was you.

But crack on back tracking.

I'm for boring old compromise.

shockthemonkey · 25/11/2023 15:57

I’m sure it’s been said, but even bomb-proof horses don’t start out that way, so unless you’re going to ban all horses out and about you’d need to show a little forbearance once in while. You are bound to come across green ones sooner or later.

That said, running up from behind could startle just about any horse.

Absolutely agree.

Banning horses who are known risks is one thing, but to expect all horses to be perfectly behaved in all circumstances is totally unrealistic and unreasonable. That's why the highway code exists. To reflect the risks, rights and considerations needed by all road and path users.

SoupDragon · 25/11/2023 16:45

wesurecouldstandgladioli · 25/11/2023 14:32

You’ve got that the wrong way round, it’s the rider who doesn’t want to consider others.

I disagree.

ginasevern · 25/11/2023 16:46

OP, why can't you walk past horses? It won't kill you or psychologically damage you. Hell, it'll hardly even inconvenience you. The road is for everyone to share and the general idea is that we all do it with thought, consideration and in a safe manner. It really is that simple. In my experience horse riders always give a wave of appreciation. Joggers on the other hand seem to think they can charge like raging bulls past pedestrians (bonus points if pedestrians are elderly) or throw themselves headlong in front of moving cars without a single notice of intent. God forbid they would have to break their stride for one nano second which perfectly illustrates your attitude towards horse riders.

SoupDragon · 25/11/2023 16:49

wesurecouldstandgladioli · 25/11/2023 14:31

But the horse riders are asking OP to stop whilst they continue on. It’s the horse riders who should stop, whilst OP slows down. Considering they also never thank OP when she stops for them, they are extremely arrogant.

No they aren't. "the horse riders have asked me to stop running while I go past their horse!!" They simply want her to slow down whilst she goes past. They have not asked her to stop moving, just to stop running.

the "without a hint of a thank you" riders are the ones on the road where the OP drives past slow and wide.

ginasevern · 25/11/2023 16:59

"But the horse riders are asking OP to stop whilst they continue on. It’s the horse riders who should stop, whilst OP slows down. Considering they also never thank OP when she stops for them, they are extremely arrogant."

No, no they're not. They're asking her to walk past their horses, not thunder on past like a lunactic. The OP sounds entitled like most of the runners I encounter. The amount of times they launch themselves across the road in my busy city without looking or a single by or leave. It's like playing a life or death video game, except I'll be the one had up for murder. The way they treat pedestrians isn't any better either. They will not stop or slow down for a second, it's as if they're possessed. On the other hand I've never met rude horseriders.

Circularargument · 25/11/2023 17:03

Solasum · 25/11/2023 06:01

A horse is very big and heavy, and can damage you a lot more quickly and easily than you can damage it. For the few seconds of inconvenience, just stop.

This. Honestly what do you want, a broken kneecap or a few yards broken pace?

IwouldIfICouldButIcantSoIWont · 25/11/2023 17:05

It depends - if you want to chance a horse being startled, rearing up, and kicking you, keep running.

Conkered · 25/11/2023 17:34

I'm never quite sure how to react when someone doesn't slow down enough, or show any awareness that they might need to. I have tried saying something like "that's a bit fast still, this horse is okay but another might not be" and have had 2 fingers stuck up at me! So I now don't say anything or thank them, but apparently that means I deserve to be thrown from my horse!

I will admit to thwacking cars with my stick if they drive too close though 😳

Hippyhippybake · 25/11/2023 18:09

I just despair of why people can’t be a bit more tolerant of others and behave like reasonable human beings.

I was walking on an isolated bridle path last week with my dogs and came around a blind bend to find another woman with her dog. Her dog was then aggressive to mine and a small scrap ensued. She was anxious and apologetic as her dog was a rescue and had aggressive tendencies but it was obvious that it was nobody’s fault, just one of those things. It was just so nice to have an interaction where both parties were polite, reasonable and tolerant of each other.

I also recently came unexpectedly across a cantering horse and rider on the same bridle path and I was horrified that my dogs were off lead and the rider was horrified she hadn’t seen me coming. Again we had a friendly conversation about it and agreed it was nobody’s fault.

DeadbeatYoda · 25/11/2023 18:45

I've been on both sides of this and I walk past horses. It's really not a big deal and could make all the difference. What's the problem?
