To let 11 year old make sushi

I know this sounds extreme but I’m not confident with him using a very sharp knife and secondly it’s our dinner and I bought quite expensive ingredients and don’t want him to ruin it or stop my other dcs eating it if it doesn’t look right (they’re picky).

Can’t you make it together?

Dacadactyl · 24/11/2023 18:15

I'd let them tbh.

No time like the present to get them involved with household stuff. Just oversee them using the knife. I'd be trying to get the others involved too. If they're showing an interest on helping, I think you'd be mad to poo poo them.

newnamethanks · 24/11/2023 18:16

Let him make his own alongside you while you prepare the rest.

Yukongoldd · 24/11/2023 18:18

He won’t let me he wants to cook for everyone himself with no help 😠

Luckydog7 · 24/11/2023 18:20

Surely he can help assemble them. He could also do the cutting once they are made? Agree slicing the fish maybe too difficult and easy to botch.

Madcats · 24/11/2023 18:20

It might sound counter-intuitive, but it is better to tackle it with a sharp knife that can slice easily, than a blunt one.

Supervise the cutting and then leave him be for his portion. Perhaps show him how to assemble some pieces first (so you have a few that the rest will eat).

Good luck

Wahwoo · 24/11/2023 18:21

No, I wouldn’t let him do it all himself for the reasons you say.

He can do his, while you’re making the others’ (to watch for knives and hygiene).

He can make everyone’s on a night you’re having pasta.

FranticHare · 24/11/2023 18:21

Encourage him! You could offer yourself as is sous chef - he might like the idea of you tidying up and washing up for him! Then you’ll be around to keep an eye…

Torganer · 24/11/2023 18:22

At least let him help. I make it with my 2yr old and then just cut it myself after.

sushiburger · 24/11/2023 18:23

How is he ever going to learn to cook if you don't let him? Tell your other kids to not be so rude.

CurlewKate · 24/11/2023 18:25

Is he a confident cook? Does he have good instructions? I'd lean on the counter with a glass of wine ready to give him a hand if he needs it. Well done him!

Bruisername · 24/11/2023 18:27

If he knows what he’s doing then let him

if he doesn’t then he can’t do it alone but you can do it together. If that’s not good enough for him then his loss

Marblessolveeverything · 24/11/2023 18:36

Well it's do it together or not at all, are you really letting an 11 year old dictate to you?

I don't mean to be alarmist but that isn't the way I would roll. By all means explain your reasoning and ask them to join or step aside.

Dacadactyl · 24/11/2023 18:37

Yukongoldd · 24/11/2023 18:18

He won’t let me he wants to cook for everyone himself with no help 😠

Just oversee him then.

DS11 got everyone's tea out of the oven and plated it up earlier. I was just there to oversee him.

When he cooks for us, I oversee him then too. I wouldn't be too worried about knives, he'll never learn if he's not allowed to use them.

Renamed · 24/11/2023 18:41

Is he using pufferfish?

could he not just do the rice ones leaving you to slice fish if using? How is he at chopping vegetables?

Yukongoldd · 24/11/2023 19:34

@Renamed erm
no just salmon and tuna

OP posts:
Yukongoldd · 24/11/2023 21:15

Thing is he doesn’t know

OP posts:
Bruisername · 24/11/2023 21:21

Well what did you do in the end?

Whiteday · 24/11/2023 21:23

Yukongoldd · 24/11/2023 18:18

He won’t let me he wants to cook for everyone himself with no help 😠

He won't let you?

Which of you is the parent?

itstrue · 24/11/2023 22:08

I get it. My eldest is the same. She would just decide in the middle to mix it up in one bowl or do something else even with me supervising!

puppymagic · 24/11/2023 22:10

I'd just do the first one or two with him to make sure he has the technique, then leave him to it, since he wants to do it alone.

Yukongoldd · 25/11/2023 11:59

We decided to do it today now. Will the fish still be ok!?🆗

OP posts:
brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 25/11/2023 12:07

And you really do need a very sharp knife to make it well - even cutting the rolled nori into pieces looks bad with a blunt knife - the edges aren’t crisp. Tell your kid the very best chefs in the world have a team of helpers.

Thepeopleversuswork · 25/11/2023 12:16

Can't he do it supervised?

My DD (now 12) loves sushi and went through a phase of making it. I would never let her do it without me in close proximity but I can't see a problem with doing it per se.

Itsmehi222 · 25/11/2023 12:17

Yukongoldd · 24/11/2023 18:18

No I wouldn’t let him make sushi with no help.
