To think I am going to live until I am 83?

Background. Years ago I had one clairvoyant reading at home, and one thing she told me that stuck with me is that I will live until I am 83.

Since then, Ive never bothered with anything like that, and am rather sceptical/critical of people that claim to know the future. Wouldnt dream of having a reading now.

My question is this remark she made stuck with me. Ive kind of believed it and often think to myself that is the age I shall live too?

Am I being silly, or is there any possibility I might?🤔

Given the average woman's lifespan, it's not especially far fetched.

Squeezita · 24/11/2023 14:20

I’m not sure how you can call yourself sceptical if you’re giving it credence.

However, I think there is such a thing as a self fulfilling prophecy so you may start to wind down if you start believing you’re dying aged 83.

I am religious though so I do think our time on Earth is predetermined by God.

ive changed my opinion now, but it sticks in my head.

My nan had 4 sisters who all died aged 94. She believed that she would also die at 94. Even though for the last couple of years of her life she was quite ill with multiple things it seemed like she hung on until she hit 94 and then went peacefully in her sleep. Self fulfilling prophecy imo

BeeCucumber · 24/11/2023 14:24

No one has any way of knowing how long they will live. We don’t have a use-by date.

Nonoatchristmas · 24/11/2023 14:26

I agree, it can absolutely be self fulfilling. I don’t believe in any woo, but my mother and (apparently - didn’t know him) my grandfather died younger than average. I’ve always had this nagging feeling since childhood that I would also die younger, but I also think it’s simply anxiety. If someone predicted I’d live until 83 I’d absolutely not believe them and probably pigheadedly die before then just to make a point 🤣

I mean technically we do, and 83 is probably about a good average for a woman (with certain lifestyle and health factors included) in this country. But that’s what ‘psychics’ do, they take something of greatest possibility and use it to cold read.

That's going to be a fraught year

I'd do 82 twice then skip to 84.

PinkDeer · 24/11/2023 14:36

How old are you now?

OlderandwiserMaybe · 24/11/2023 14:45

I'm fully anticipating living into my 90's and being a crazy old lady embarrassing my grandchildren (whom as yet don't exist)
I've no basis on which to believe such a thing other than most of my relatives have lived to a very old age and i am generally healthy and always have been.

These days 83 isn't incredibly old and it's very possible you will live until then. Come back on this thread in years to come and update us LOL

SurelySmartie · 24/11/2023 14:50

Are you viewing this as good news or bad news OP?

83 is the average female life expectancy in the uk so if you had to guess one age that someone would live to… I guess that would be it!

Catza · 24/11/2023 14:55

I was once told by a clairvoyant that I will die at 35. Haven't given it much thought and still alive.

SurelySmartie · 24/11/2023 14:58

But are you 34?

decionsdecisions62 · 24/11/2023 15:01

I think there is actually a company in America that will test your dna and tell you if you want that information.

ManateeFair · 24/11/2023 15:02

YWNBU to believe that you might live to 83. YABU to believe that you will live to 83.

It's a fairly standard lifespan for a woman so it's perfectly plausible, but it's no more plausible than living to 82, or 86, or 79, or indeed getting run over a truck and dying tomorrow.

You may live to 83, you may not. If you do, it will not be because a clairvoyant* saw into your future.

*scammer

AInightingale · 24/11/2023 15:06

Well, when I was about 19, my friend and I were messing about with a ouija board (yes, I know, very foolish) and it told us that I was going to die at 47 and she would live to be 83. I am now 51 so the forces of darkness don't know much.

welcometothnuthouse · 24/11/2023 15:08

Even doctors could tell for certain how long you will live, there is always room for error even if patient is terminal.
As for clairvoyants, I don't believe a 'real' one would tell you that even if they did know. They play into peoples fears and make money out of them as a result.

I think there is actually a company in America that will test your dna and tell you if you want that information.

DNA can't tell you the age you're going to die at. At all.

For a start, your DNA doesn't know that you're a smoker, or what your eating habits and lifestyle are like. It also doesn't know if you're going to fall down the stairs and break your neck next week. It doesn't know if you're going to catch an infectious disease or get sepsis or choke on a peanut or crash your car.

Even if you fill in a lifestyle questionnaire as well as providing DNA, it still can't tell you the age you're going to die at. It could give you a rough idea of the kind of lifespan you might be expected to have, but even that would be pretty meaningless in the big scheme of things.

Hubblebubble · 24/11/2023 15:14

I have a feeling I'll live into my 90s. Based on two of my great grandmothers living into their 90s. A lot of longevity is generic. I also have a good life style, exercise, don't smoke, seldom drink, cook healthy food.

Hubblebubble · 24/11/2023 15:15

Genetic not generic

Beezknees · 24/11/2023 15:23

I've got it in my head that I'll live a long life.

One of my work colleagues is convinced she will die quite young. She lives an unhealthy lifestyle - vapes, only eats beige food/takeaways, has anaemia. She's not bothered about changing her lifestyle and instead has accepted dying young!

Cumbrianlife · 24/11/2023 15:35

MIL has always said she would live until she's 90 and she'd live long enough to see my DS1 get married. I have 3 DC and she has five other GC, all of whom are older than DS1. I've always thought it was a pretty awful thing to say, even if she thought it, although it's obvious DH and DS1 are the golden child to her in their respective generations.
Coincidentally, DS1 is getting married next year, her 90th is a few weeks before. I wonder how she feels now about being so vocal that she'd die at that age. She's been saying it for at least the last thirty years, although not recently. MIL is in rude health, especially given her age. She has far outlived all her siblings, FIL and all her old friends. I'll be interested to see if she is right, I am the least woo person I know but I might change my mind if she isn't around to blow out the candles on her 91st. I did hear her say recently she will be mad if anyone sends a card with her age on.
