What would you think if your gardener sent this message to all their clients?

"Hi all, just to let you know a new service I'm offering -

Poo picking - Happy to clean up after your dog before I start work
£15 first 1-15min
£1per min after that

Thanks!"

This follows an incident on Monday where they got dog poo sprayed all over them whilst strimming a garden that hadn't been poo-picked (as previously requested) before they started work. They had to leave work to go home and shower as it was splattered over their face.

YABU - dog poo is an occupational hazard of gardening and that's an outrageous price to charge for clearing it up

YANBU - fair enough, dog poo is rank and that's a reasonable price to charge for dealing with it before starting work

What if it's cat poo? I have had cats shit in my garden (and not along the edges, slap bang in the middle by the washing line), and wouldn't have thought to check somebody else's pet had shat all over my garden before the gardener came.

pinkcableknit · 25/11/2023 18:43

He's right, but sending a sarcy message to your clients isn't going to help business...

Americano75 · 25/11/2023 18:46

Good for him! I hope he was wearing goggles, apart from being gross you really don't want animal shit in your eyes.

TiptoeThroughTheToadstools · 25/11/2023 18:49

YANBU gardening services and picking up dog shit are two different things, it's a disgusting job, particularly if it isn't your dog. IMHO people should be clearing their own gardens.

Assuming you do not live in the south west of the UK then, as it's hardly dipped below freezing at all here so far and most days have been in double figures with nights in the higher single figures. This weekend is set to be very cold, but as of today we have only had two frosts (and one of those hardly counts because it had vanished by 6.30am!).

I’m in the SW and mowed my grass a few days ago. It was 12 degrees here today!

fetchacloth · 25/11/2023 19:04

Fair play to the gardener really.

Cazareeto1 · 25/11/2023 19:09

It’s common respect to pick up your dog poo before a gardener comes, would you like dog shif sprayed on your face!? I dare say he has sent that out so people will pick up their dogs poo! And yes when shit is mowed over it sprays everywhere! Poor gardener I would personally vomit if someone’s dog shit was sprayed on my face when doing my job! They are not paied to pick up shit or have shit sprayed in their face, poor bloke. I think you are being completely ignorant and unreasonable. Would you go to you work and be sprayed with dog shit on your face of all places??

BubbleBubbleBubbleBubblePop · 25/11/2023 19:10

Good on him. It will act as more of a deterrent I should think, make people clean up after their animals or pay up. How embarrassing for them, leaving shite for the gardener to come across.

gnarlynarwhal · 25/11/2023 19:14

I don’t blame them. That’s disgusting.

Wingingit11 · 25/11/2023 19:22

Grim.
not a dog owner but genuinely icked that people just leave it out there if you can see it anyway

Cherrysoup · 25/11/2023 19:24

He's probably sent it to shame the client and to ensure it doesn't happen again. Nobody will pay that but if he has to check before starting work, fair play to him.

Lavenderblue11 · 25/11/2023 19:28

FUPAgirl · 24/11/2023 08:04

Op I think it's really fair because the point really is to encourage customers to do it themselves- good on that gardener

This isn't reply to your message @FUPAgirl, just wondering about your display name - is it what I think it is? 🤣🤣

Hayliebells · 25/11/2023 19:41

YANBU. And I think I'd just drop the clients who don't poo pick, if that's a realistic option.

Canisaysomething · 25/11/2023 19:57

I’ve worked as a gardener in a different country. The concept of letting your dog shit on your lawn and not pick it up is absolutely disgusting. It’s a gross lazy dog owner thing that definitely doesn’t happen in other countries. Super gross.

SomethingUniqueThisTime · 25/11/2023 20:24

I think it’s very reasonable, the cost indicates it is not acceptable to expect the gardener to clear up poo before they start work.
However I’ve been caught out on my allotment by random fox poo, so I think it might be an issue if it’s not obvious to the garden’s owner.

Philandbill · 25/11/2023 20:28

Skybluepinky · 25/11/2023 18:34

That their are some disgusting people who don’t pick up after their dogs, good on the gardener.

This! If it's anything where you are like it is around here then gardeners are hard to come by. I'd be ditching that client if I was him. Somebody else will snap him up.

MrsMarzetti · 25/11/2023 20:28

Some people are grim, you should be picking the poo up as soon as the dog has done it. Why should your neighours put up with the smell? Manky people.

TheWorldisGoingMad · 25/11/2023 21:09

I hate to say it, but this makes me think their is lots of poo in the garden if you need this service. Perhaps mobility or disability is a factor. The risk of the dog stepping in it and then coming back into the house must be high.😬 I suppose it depends on how often the poo is lifted. If it's daily or every few days, a dog poo lifter would be useful. But 2+ poos a day for a week or more is a serious health hazard....🤢
My dog doesn't go in the garden, she goes on her walks. However neighbours cats poo all the time and it stinks to high heaven. What the heck do they eat, it stinks like a decomposing body.

If I was the Gardener I'd assume 1 poo could be a fox, dog or cat. Any more than 1, you miss your session and you're still billed.

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 25/11/2023 21:10

Our gardening firm weee very clear that of poo is not picked they will mow around it. They are also paid online the day before they come.

Missingpop · 25/11/2023 21:13

I can’t begin to imagine how gross that was for them £30 quid a minute wouldn’t be unreasonable in my eyes, but I’m one of those people who clean up after my girls even if the get me up at 02.00am for the loo; I can’t leave a turd on the grass I hate seeing dog crap left on verges or paths so I’m darned if I’d leave it in my own garden good look to you I hope you get paid for doing it x

WhatYouWearing · 25/11/2023 21:54

If most of the gardener's clients don't pick up shit then the message is fair enough. However I suspect it's just a passive aggressive way to shame one client and he should have just sorted it out directly. Or better still, withdrawn his services.

BlowMyBubbles · 25/11/2023 22:56

DoggyDooDooDoo · 24/11/2023 08:49

🤣 but the question is, how much would a poo picker charge? What's a reasonable rate for the task?

How much poo would a poo picker pick if a poo picker could pick poo.

WhatYouWearing · 25/11/2023 22:59

@BlowMyBubbles 😂

Packetofcrispsplease · 25/11/2023 23:27

Ugh can’t believe some customers are so lazy they haven’t picked up dog poo 💩
missing one ..ok understandable if your dog has gone for one late at night and you don’t see it ..but multiple just ugh 😣 .
I have only one dog I guess but I’m out regularly to clean up .
He usually goes 💩on his walks with me anyway

debbs77 · 25/11/2023 23:31
