"Hi all, just to let you know a new service I'm offering -

Poo picking - Happy to clean up after your dog before I start work
£15 first 1-15min
£1per min after that

Thanks!"

This follows an incident on Monday where they got dog poo sprayed all over them whilst strimming a garden that hadn't been poo-picked (as previously requested) before they started work. They had to leave work to go home and shower as it was splattered over their face.

YABU - dog poo is an occupational hazard of gardening and that's an outrageous price to charge for clearing it up

YANBU - fair enough, dog poo is rank and that's a reasonable price to charge for dealing with it before starting work

There was a woman who walked her dog by my house every day. Her dog poo’d in my yard every day and she left it there, every day.
So I collected it every day and on the fifth and final day, I headed her off at the pass and presented her with the big bag of poo and said, “Here - I believe this is yours. Don’t leave your dog’s shit in my yard any more.”
I never saw her again, but I’m sure she’s letting her dog shit in somebody else’s yard every day.
I hate shitty dog owners like her. They give good dog owners a bad name.

People who let their dogs poo in the garden don't pick it up immediately? Eww 😳

Harmonypus · 26/11/2023 04:30

This might be a good idea, but £60 an hour for removing poo is definitely excessive, especially as its not a job that requires qualifications!

There are plenty of professional people who don't earn that much!

They're a gardener, not a poo picker, and £60 an hour is a surcharge for asking them to do something (disgusting) out of their job scope.

I don't see how qualifications are relevant. I used to bill as a lawyer and you'd have to pay even me more than my lawyer's rate to pick up fecal matter, even though poo picker doesn't require any qualifications.

Dogs should be banned

You're on the wrong thread, this one is for people having a sensible discussions.

I think the message is great OP!

PaterPower · 26/11/2023 06:21

I don’t think he’s charging enough, tbh.

YANBU

That said I don't understand why people don't pick it up as their dogs do it. It's not difficult, I watch my dog, and bag the poop. I can't imagine having to dodge dog poo in my garden, and the gardener is completely justified to charge for picking it up if the owners are too lazy to do it.

GlomOfNit · 26/11/2023 09:49

I can't imagine how disgusting it must be to be sprayed with dog shit while working! I think it was politely but pointedly worded and frankly - it's his job. He gets to set the parameters and if he regularly works gardens where lazy gross owners can't be arsed to pick up their dog's crap, then that is a hazardous workplace.

I live next door to people who never, ever walk their dog and the garden is full of turds. They have young children.

GrannyRose15 · 26/11/2023 13:36

I don’t think he is being serious about the charges but it is a good way to get his message across. All his considerate clients will now be even more considerate and his inconsiderate clients won’t ask him back. Win win really.

Bananacup · 27/11/2023 12:18

I don't get it. I don't have a dog and have never lived with one so maybe don't really appreciate the dog poo situation but... animals poo in gardens, that's what animals do? Snails poo, birds poo, neighbours' cats poo, foxes poo. Is there something special about dog poo? I don't see how you can be a gardener and be allergic to touching poo (with gloves on). Our garden has hundreds of snails and they do poo! That's what compost is. Stuff rots, animals poo

Clearly IABU as everyone on this thread disagrees with me but I genuinely don't get it

It can be large , gross and slimey, not easy to pick up..its not always well formed.
I left a really good job because a weeks worth was left all over a large garden. He had two dogs and staff working from home.I just felt sick having to pick it all up before cutting the lawn.
