Course he said it! What happened to levelling up eh! Scary that they actually think like this. It isn't helpful at all. Disgraceful in fact.

I'm actually more upset by the comments on here then the circumstances around what was actually said.

Anyway, which poster is going to tell Tom Hardy or Duncan Bannatyne that they live in a shit hole?

I believe Bannatyne lives at Wynyard and Hardy lives in Yarm - neither of which are places in the North Stockton constituency. I'm sure like everyone else they are aware that Stockton North is 'a shit hole'

Just been checking the boundaries, Stockton North includes Billingham which was flavour of the month with the Tories during the pandemic when they realised there was vaccine manufacturing expertise there. At the last election the Tories massively reduced Labour's majority in the constituency so if they'd been more serious about levelling up they might have been able to gain the seat. Now it'll be safe Labour again after that fuck up.

And the rest of the north east. Cleverly’s single-handedly demolished the red wall.

This is funny.

I am about as far as a Tory apologist as it gets.

But what I am (which most people in this comment thread are not) is a realist.

Assuming Labour wins in 2024 (high probability of this) there will be no money to invest in places like Stockton over the entire first Parliamemt (2025 - 2030) because of our high debt service costs (nearing £100bn/year).

This is not a "hypothetical thing". It is reality.

Starmer knows this, which is why he is laying down the ground work for two terms (2025 - 30 & 2030 - 2035).

It is "possible" there might be levelling up money from 2030 onwards, but there will be no money until 2030.

you are completely missing the point. I neither know nor care what Stockton is like, although I do care about children living in poverty and I do care about a member of the government behaving like this. Being rude about a community in our country, lying about it, backtracking about his lies none of that is OK regardless of how you or anyone else feels about Stockton.

BIossomtoes · 24/11/2023 07:58

It’s the front page of the Northern Echo so clearly it’s very newsworthy up here. That will have lost them a huge number of votes.

Those votes plus the votes of the elderly who have learned that the Tory party think they should have all just died in the pandemic. They seem to be digging their own grave.

Topofthemountain · 24/11/2023 09:39

Except Stockton North includes Wynyard, Thorpe Thewles, Norton, Billingham, Stillington as well as the less desirable areas.

They get accused of constantly lying, yet here he is saying something 100% accurate and people still complain

Wow.

His inappropriate comment was in response to the extremely high rates of child poverty.

Ive never been to Stockton but if it is a ‘shithole’, and if it is a ‘shithole’ because of poverty, it’s because the Tories have made it a ‘shithole’

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 24/11/2023 09:43

lochmaree · 23/11/2023 20:22

it's not ideal but I dont think it's newsworthy.

You don’t think an MO, a decision maker whose actions affect millions, blaming children for being in poverty is newsworthy?

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 24/11/2023 09:45

BouncingJAS · 23/11/2023 21:07

Its somewhat funny that people are pretending to be angered by this.

First off, Stockton is a dump. It is massively deprived and its depressing to even visit the place.

And no, "levelling up" was just a slogan to buy votes at the GE2019.

Stockton had been dying for a long time and nobody is coming to rescue it.

Nor should they. When you have very limited money, Stockton is not the place you should be spending this money on. The area is already dead with no hope of recovering.

WTF have I just read.

You don’t think a place that needs levelling up should have any money spent on it?

I hate humans sometimes

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 24/11/2023 09:48

BouncingJAS · 23/11/2023 21:13

Hate to break this to you,

But that is not how life works when you have limited funds.

You have to make choices.

Stockton is simply not the right choice.

The UK is facing a triage type economic situation due to massive economic damage (Brexit/Covid).

Stockton is simply not worth saving.

The government do it have ‘limited funds’ - they just choose not to spend them anywhere outside the south.

Stockton isn’t worth saving - shall we just nepalm all the residents then?

Thank fuck real life doesn’t work like that

Notaflippinclue · 23/11/2023 21:25

Good job everybody who says things like shit hole at work doesn't get sacked - the country would implode

My job isn’t to make the country a better place and do something serious about child poverty. HTH

Namechange1345677 · 23/11/2023 21:31

I know stockton very well! And I've been to a hell of a lot worse places! Parts of London are horrific!! Stockton has been neglected over the years but its still trying! And doesn't deserve such comments!

Yep. I went to Wembley recently - the area was filthy, run down, drug dealers on street corners openly dealing, fights in public etc.

But I’m not so much of a colossal cunt that I’d say “fuck them leave the children to squalor” and I can’t imagine why anyone else would ever take that stance.

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 24/11/2023 09:56

BouncingJAS · 23/11/2023 21:58

People with your "views" are ignored in the Treasury because they are not relevant.

They care about value for money. If they put in £x how much could they expect to get out in £x.

And thats why Stockton fails vs others towns and villages in the UK

It is simply not cost effective to invest in a place like Stockton right now.

Your "emotional reactions" are simply not relevant here. Its only cold, hard numbers that matter when it comes to investment when the cost of capital is high.

OK then if it’s about ‘cold hard numbers’ - give me a financial breakdown of WHY the government can’t invest in Stockton. Seeing as you know it all, what is it about Stockton that means it will inevitably financially fail and that the repercussions of NOT investing (ie generations of impoverished economically inactive people, costing the economy millions to take care of) will be cheaper in the long run?

Ill wait.

Westfacing · 24/11/2023 10:11

Stockton is simply not worth saving.

In 1981 Mrs Thatcher was minded to let Liverpool wither on the vine - I think the phrase was 'managed decline'.

That wouldn't have been a wise move would it.

StrictlyComeSnoozing · 24/11/2023 10:16

People aren't half getting carried away with the wrong element of this.

It doesn't matter that it was Stockton. It doesn't matter what your personal opinion of Stockton is.

The Home Secretary should absolutely not ever be referring to any constituency, town, village, city or part of the UK as a shithole, and most certainly not as a remark in response to the amount of children living in poverty in said place. Lying about it is perhaps even worse as it is clear as day on the recording what words are said so just shows further his contempt for the people he is paid to represent as Home Secretary.

Westfacing · 24/11/2023 10:22

He seems to like the word shit - he hasn't denied saying the Rwanda plan was batshit.

PrimalOwl10 · 24/11/2023 11:07

Bannatyne lives in Yarm, Tom Hardy lives in America he never lived in Stockton his girlfriend parents live near Thorpe thewels hence why he's been spotted about. I know as I'm a teessider.

This, with bells on.

If you don't have a problem with the home secretary reacting to a question about child poverty with the phrase "because it's a shithole" then really, raise your standards.

PickAChew · 24/11/2023 12:42

The people of Stockton wouldn't be allowed the tents. Tents bad, remember.

You have an incredibly low bar. Until a week or so ago, this person was representing the UK overseas. You really believe such conduct is acceptable?

orangeginaa · 24/11/2023 12:53

I've met plenty of politicians through work and my major problem with the Tory party is they are generally truly awful about working class people. Brexit was just a way to get the working class vote by using immigration as a catalyst. They see the majority of UK citizens as heathens. I'll never forget what a Tory back bencher said to me about teenage mums - it was disgusting and he thought he was being hilarious.
Labour politicians are far from perfect but their objectives are totally different. They at least have a moral compass - even if their policies are sometimes off. I know who I'd rather have in power.

ilovesooty · 24/11/2023 13:31

Sunak should sack him, but he won't.

Exactly - as I said, can anyone imagine him saying it about Weybridge or fucking Virginia Water? The cunt.

He can’t really - he’s running out of people to put in the cabinet.

Tory party ... are generally truly awful about working class people.

How do you reconcile that statement with Tories who are from WC, though, like Gove, Dorries, Javid, Schapps, McVey (started life in care), Stephen Crabb, Steve Baker.... I'm not sure the "Tories are all posh boys" stereotype holds up, any more.
