Mussels in white wine for a child?

Divinespark · 23/11/2023 09:11

Would you serve mussels in white wine to a nearly 11 year old? Strange question, but the child in question likes mussels, occasionally, the mussels in butter was supposed to be delivered but got the white wine instead lol.

Why are people so insistent that it cooks off? A quick google will tell you that it doesn’t.

KnittedCardi · 24/11/2023 11:37

I never really thought about it tbh. The DC's always ate what we ate, including anything with wine in. They both consumed clams and mussels as toddlers upwards, dipping bread in the juices to finish off, benefitting from holidays in Italy, and an Italian heritage. Back when Cafe Rouge was ubiquitous, the supper of choice was a big bucket of mussels with fries.

PelicanPopcorn · 24/11/2023 11:53

Got amazing images of people totally legless after eating mussels 🤔

GoingOffOnATangent · 24/11/2023 12:24

@PelicanPopcorn might there have been a glass of wine or two drunk with the meal? 😁🥂

HoneyBeatrice · 24/11/2023 15:27

Yes of course

ChampagneVan · 24/11/2023 15:28

Mine have had red wine in bolognese etc since they were teeny!!

Magicmama92 · 24/11/2023 16:02

I wouldn't even if the alcohol burns off but it's best to ask the child and their parents.

Normandy144 · 24/11/2023 16:10

Yes of course. My eldest loves mussels and has moules marinieres when we're in France. It wouldn't even occur to me not to give it to her to be honest.

TheKeatingFive · 24/11/2023 16:12

Served this up to a 9 year old and 5 year old last week. Went down a treat.

bombastix · 24/11/2023 16:16

If the child eats it then excellent. Top class parenting. The alcohol will have evaporated.

moleeye · 24/11/2023 16:27

Yep

My 9 and 4 YO demolish it

CornishGem1975 · 24/11/2023 16:35

Yep, I regularly serve bolognese with red wine in it to my 3 year old. Never questioned it to be honest. Alcohol cooks off.

sensationalsally · 24/11/2023 16:38

Alcohol would be burned off in cooking process.

This is the new “cancel the cheque” isn’t it?

Alcohol does not completely boil off unless you cook it for about 90 minutes.

Obviously a couple of glasses cooked for half an hour and shared between several people is going to have only a safe quantity per portion, but this “it will boil off” is complete nonsense.

Is it true that alcohol is cooked off in food?

You've made a lovely, rich stew with wine or beer to flavour it. But can your baby or toddler share it with you and your family? It depends on a number of…

I'm going to assume we're talking about the vacuum sealed packets from the supermarket. These, according to Sainsbury's, contain 5% wine.

5% of 250g = 12.5g.

12.5g of white wine = about 12.5ml (a small glass is 125 or 250ml). Or 2 and a half teaspoons - less than a tablespoon.

If it were a stronger 12% wine (and not the cheap stuff they use in cooking), that would then be around (checks Sainsbury's again) 1.5 units per 125ml glass.

1.5 units / 12,5 = 0.15 units of alcohol.

Then add heat specifically to make steam.

I don't think they'll be falling asleep in their profiteroles, somehow.

wafflingworrier · 24/11/2023 20:15

Yes. We buy the packs from Aldi, my kids love them and have eaten mussels in white wine since they were 5 years old.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/11/2023 20:21

Yes absolutely

It really is. Cancel the cheque, penis beaker and now the alcohol will burn off.

Sadly you can post the facts as much as you like and there will still be someone along soon to tell us the alcohol will all burn off 😆

10yo here loves a white wine and cream sauce, and mussels are a firm favourite. Wine goes in stews, sauces and bolognese here, and has done since forever. Entirely your own choice obviously, but I doubt there's much alcohol per serving by the time it's cooked.
