...to be super pissed of with the unending and ridiculous use of super as an adjective

For example, 'i am super excited about our christmas party', 'it's super spooky...' etc
Where did 'very' go?
Why does everyomne want to sound like an eight-years-old american?

From an etymological perspective, in a lot of contexts “super”, which derives from the Latin for over or beyond would actually make more sense than “very” which derives from the Latin for true. “I am beyond and over excited to go to the spooky haunted house because it’s said to be beyond scary” makes fine grammatical sense. And as another poster has picked up, it’s neither a new usage nor an Americanism.

Yes, it annoys me too. I think it's a US import. I had to read an important professional report at work yesterday and it appeared at least twice. Boils my p*ss. 😒

enchantedsquirrelwood · 23/11/2023 11:12

I don't mind that one.

But I noticed another one I dislike this morning - "wait list". It's a waitING list.

truetruebarneymcgrew · 23/11/2023 11:21

I'm old(ish!) and I remember everything being 'super' in the 80s, it then went out of fashion just as 'one' went out of fashion to be replaced by 'you'. They were both considered posh iirc, and fell from favour.

Ugh it grinds my gears

How can anyone getting super-annoyed by the use of "super" then express their anger using such a super-annoying phrase as "grind my gears" or "boils my piss"?

enchantedsquirrelwood · 23/11/2023 11:27

And another one, this is parkrun specific, but the expression for the person who's done the most parkruns is:

the "runniest" runner. Ugh.

betterangels · 23/11/2023 11:28

Everything is awesome and incredible, too. Just no. YANBU.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/11/2023 11:36

YANBU

People are suddenly 'terrified' of mild irritations where a proportionate reaction would be to be a bit worried.

That conjures an image of the most unfortunately-afflicted patient on an incontinence ward...

I just read this to my trail/marathon/ultra runner dh and he grimaced. Runniest runners are the reason he is very careful what and when he eats before a run, and why he is also very careful to stick precisely to the route for the first few miles - until the runniest runners have dealt with their guts.

I mean, I 💯 love the evolution of language and, like, the way a new generation bring their own culture. I totes get that it can be super annoying but I mean just like lean in and don’t deep it I guess.

I was just going to post that

Taylor swift threads were where I first saw that.

And today a couple of posters were talking about change rooms.
