...to be super pissed of with the unending and ridiculous use of super as an adjective

For example, 'i am super excited about our christmas party', 'it's super spooky...' etc
Where did 'very' go?
Why does everyomne want to sound like an eight-years-old american?

Language changes and evolves. Best get used to it 😉

FaiIureToLunch · 23/11/2023 06:41

It’s super annoying but I love it because it makes everything feel so enthusiastic 🎉🎉🙏

sorrynotathome · 23/11/2023 06:42

Or “incredible”. I think it’s really easy to believe most/all of the things that people describe as incredible.

Teatrayderby · 23/11/2023 06:43

I also hate this. My DC have also started to say 'search up' instead of just research/Google. "Mum can you search up how to...." I've told them they will need to leave if they continue. Both under 8 but I think that's fair.

chillichutneysarnie · 23/11/2023 06:43

Haha I thought I'd picked that up from my family in Canada, apparently not

Vettrianofan · 23/11/2023 06:44

I think it's jolly good actually!

sorrynotathome · 23/11/2023 06:46

Actually “search up” may be less offensive than “research”. People who say they do their own research do nothing of the kind - they just do a google search.

MurielThrockmorton · 23/11/2023 06:48

YANBU. I commented about this a while ago, why is it so super annoying though?

Twiglets1 · 23/11/2023 06:49

Ugh it grinds my gears

CarpetSlipper · 23/11/2023 06:50

Yanbu, it’s very irritating.

KatBurglar · 23/11/2023 06:51

In “super spooky” it’s an adverb, not an adjective.

Adjectives modify nouns, adverbs modify verbs and adjectives.

jemenfous37 · 23/11/2023 06:54

@Teatrayderby 🤣🤣

jemenfous37 · 23/11/2023 06:56

@KatBurglar Thank you (hangs head in shame...)😃

jemenfous37 · 23/11/2023 07:05

Thank you everypne!
@TwiddlingMyToes , yes, it does evolve, but such evolutions make no sense! We have such a rich and descriptive language, yet we are adopting such nonsense as 'super' and 'reaching out' rather than contacting someone (I mean, why say "I'll reach out to Grumpyface" rather than "I'll ring Grumpyface"?

I appreciate that few today worry about being able to understand spelling, grammar and appropriate use of language, so we may be a small collective of voices railing into the wind!

Also, Grumpyface is a good descriptor of me

Dilbertian · 23/11/2023 07:17

'Reach out' sounds (dare I say it 😉) super sensitive. Could also cover any form of communication: phone, email, semaphore. But, yes, I agree, it's super irritating and mostly prattish.

Here's another to grind your gears and raise your blood pressure: 'based off of'. No! Whatever it is, it's 'based on', or even 'based upon'.

jemenfous37 · 23/11/2023 07:20

I may have to silence you, @Dilbertian !!! 😀

OP posts:
tuvamoodyson · 23/11/2023 07:21

Yes…I’ve mentioned it on here before. Nobody is ever very busy/excited/pleased, it’s all so OTT, ‘devastated’ over the most trivial of things, when really you’re disappointed….its all so dramatic! 🙈

EvlisPersley · 23/11/2023 07:24

YANBU - and why is everything “iconic“ all of a sudden? 😏

Dipsomaniax · 23/11/2023 07:32

I hate "reach out". When I hear it I picture the speaker stretching their arm in a a Rose-on-the-door (or did she even reach out for/to him) type gesture.

But I love "Super". It's enthusiastic and I am trying to embrace the evolution of language.

What I cannot do is use the americanised sanitising of language: poop (instead of poo), passed on 🙄 instead of died.

x2boys · 23/11/2023 07:33

I find Perfect more annoying
M son has complex disabilities so we have various professionals involved in his care ,and I found them saying perfect after everything, " so the next meeting will be on the 13th" " is that ok " yes ," perfect

CoalCraft · 23/11/2023 07:35

Honestly OP this is super trivial

Summonedbybees · 23/11/2023 07:48

John Donne, the 16th century poet and scholar is credited as starting the trend and putting super in front of all sorts of words
Hence his biography, Super-Infinite

RunnyPaint · 23/11/2023 08:02

"Spooky" is an adjective in the example given (not a verb), so OP is right that "super" is an adjective here.

I quite like the enthusiasm of "super", especially when said in a super-posh voice.

RunnyPaint · 23/11/2023 08:05

Ignore me, it's too early in the morning! It is an adverb here 😳

LadyOfTheCanyon · 23/11/2023 09:42

I like to comment 'Incredible scenes.' in a dry tone when people are being excessively gushy- it often brings people down to Earth a bit!
