VW Id4 speed limiter - Help!!!

Id4speed · 22/11/2023 11:23

Hey all,

I have an VW id4 and all I want it to do is to adjust automatically the max allowable speed limit I should not go above.

I don’t want the car to accelerate my speed to match the max allowable speed limit, like a cruise system would do.

All I want is to refrain me from going over the limit! i.e if the limit is 50mph the car should not let me go above 50 but will also let me go with 30 if this is what I prefer.

I live in a rural area where some roads are 20mph, others 30mph, others 40mph and others 50mph.

It’s very easy to go exceed the allowable speed and I need some help!

Can ID4 do it for me?

I don’t want to set myself the speed limit every 5mins depending where I drive, I want the car to use the road signs and adjust it automatically.

AIBU - ID4 can’t do it
AINBU - ID4 can do it

If AINBU please help me to set it up!!!

I can't imagine this technology is found in any cars. It's certainly possible for the companies to implement it, but it would be a massive safety hazard (that one time you need to speed up to avoid an accident and the car won't do it...).

It would also no doubt lead to endless litigation from people who were fined for speeding in areas where the car had the wrong limit.

Lots of cars do have limiters which you can set yourself, but it won't automatically adjust.

Maybe try just paying attention to the speed limit and not speeding?

IncorrigibIeRogue · 22/11/2023 11:36

Can't you drive or something?

Why on earth would you expect your car to be responsible for maintaining the correct speed for the road? It's a car, not a sentient being with the ability to make independent judgements that might need to alter in a split second.

If you're not able to manage sticking within the speed limit yourself then frankly you shouldn't be driving.

sollenwir · 22/11/2023 11:44

Just pay attention to the speed limits and obey them - anyone who is driving and has passed a driving test should not need technology to do this for them.

IloveJudgeJudy · 22/11/2023 11:46

I know exactly the facility you mean. I had it on my Skoda (as well as cruise control). I think I have it on my Seat and DH has it on his Volvo. On my Skoda you could switch between them with a switch on the same stalk as cruise control.

SleepingisanArt · 22/11/2023 11:48

We had a car which read the road signs and adjusted the speed accordingly- it was a nightmare! On the motorway you'd be doing 70 and the drive past an exit slip road with a sign for 40... Guess what? The car slams on the brakes to match the sign it's 'seen' and there's nothing you can do to prevent it. Really dangerous. Hated it! For other reasons returned the car to the dealership and now have a car with cruise control and we use our eyes to check the speed limits......

DragonMyst · 22/11/2023 11:59

My Ford Focus has it. As SleepingisanArt said it will read side road signs and adjust to those occasionally, mine doesn't slam the brakes on though it limits the fuel supply and you can override it by pressing the accelerator harder. It doesn't always get it right so I always check when changing speed zones anyway which kind of defeats the object imo.

Thank you all!

For those that replied with a bit of negativity, most new cars have cruise control in them. It doesn’t mean that the drivers can’t drive!

I was just asking if there is a speed limiter function instead of cruise control in id4!

I have an iD3 - so I would imagine the controls are similar. I can set it to sound an alarm if I go above the speed limit, and it automatically adjusts the speed at which the alarm sounds.

Cruise control is not a safety issue though, whereas your inability to be in control of your car's speed seems to be.

Your question was about multiple settings though. If you aren't aware of the speed limit at all times for your surroundings then that could be a problem.

RTFM?

It would take you less time and trouble to research this from the source, than to ask random internet strangers. Why do people expect to be spoon-fed information rather than learning for themselves??

Also, not "negativity" to point out that you should be following speed limits without the need to rely on technology. That's just a basic driving skill.

There's no negativity, just pointing out the reality of the situation with regard to monitoring your speed.

Safe travels.

CaramacFiend · 22/11/2023 22:15

Most car speedos read 3-4mph more than actual speed so there is some margin. And speed cameras usually have a small margin too. So it's hard to accidentally speed if you're reasonably careful.

You can double check this by using Google maps with the speedo on and comparing to the car speedo - satellite navigation is much more accurate.

My Passat speedo reads close to 35mph when I'm actually doing 30.

CaramacFiend · 22/11/2023 22:17

You can turn the Google maps speedo on and off by tapping the speed limit sign at the bottom. Will pop out next to it so you can compare your current speed to the limit.

SgtJuneAckland · 22/11/2023 22:18

I was a passenger in a colleague's car yesterday. It didn't physically limit the speed but did notify her when she exceeded it even minimally , she was doing 32 in a 30, thinking it was a 40

Of course cruise control is a safety issue. If you're not paying attention you could plough into the back of a stationary lorry at 70mph.

Tinkerbyebye · 22/11/2023 22:35

I don’t know of any car that would do this automatically, what happens if limits have been reduced unexpectedly ? Any electronic system is sort of linked to a main system, my car details on the dash the limit and changes as the limit changes, picking it up from somewhere, but we are having lots of roadworks, limits have been reduced, the car doesn’t pick that up and quotes the old one

just set your speed limiter manually, it’s not difficult

Modern cruise control keeps uses radar to keep you from doing exactly this. It slows down as it detects vehicles ahead, either to keep you a set distance from the car in front, or slam on the brakes if you haven't noticed the stationary lorry.

All new cars are required to have speed limit sign reading technology for this exact reason.

CaramacFiend · 22/11/2023 23:05

I once drove a truck that had automatic braking and it nearly caused me to crash. I was approaching a corner and as I started to turn in the brakes activated unexpectedly mid corner (I think they picked up a junction box or lamp post on the kerb).

But rather than emergency brake they sort of did a hard dab, quickly on and off, and caused the fully loaded 32t truck to lurch mid bend.

Don't trust this, it's a legend. As any car mechanic will tell you, some read more, some less, some pretty much spot on.

FelicityFlops · 22/11/2023 23:15

To be really honest, if you, personally, are not able to observe the speed limits on the roads you use, please just stop driving.
Cruise control can be used on motorways, for example, but are not a substitute for being alert and in control of your car. Actually, I think cruise control is quite dangerous as it diverts your mind from the task in hand, but don't take any notice of me, because I have only been driving for 47 years with no accidents (the last 25 in a high-powered car).
I am sure all you youngsters know much better.

TedWilson · 22/11/2023 23:17

I know what you mean. My BMW had this but can't find it on new electric merc. Maybe they don't do it on electrics yet? BMW was an image of two speed clocks I think.

I'm sorry but if you want your car to do all this, for you, then you shouldn't be driving because you are unwilling to pay proper attention to the road.

I'd advice you to wait until driverless cars come out.

Or get someone else to drive you. Like a bus driver.

Stop being lazy and pay attention to the road properly so you don't hit something.

StillWantingADog · 22/11/2023 23:27

our car does this so it’s not an unreasonable question
