To think I've cracked it?

Nails.

I feel like in order to be well-groomed, smart nails are essential. Yes, clean and tidy is the minimum, but having a colour (or a french polish), to me, is really elegant. (And yes, I know some people don't like French polish).

(1) I've tried press-on nails. The smell of the glue is awful. Taking them off was awful & leaves nails damaged. It looks terrible when one falls off. I hate that 'thick' feeling.

(2) The same goes for acrylics.

(3) I've tried doing an ordinary polish on myself. It always looks shit. And that's even if I don't knock against something. I try to do it like when I am sitting to watch a movie, so it has an hour to dry, but I will accidentally press it into my jumper or something. I've tried doing it just before bed so there's less chance of creating a dent/smudge. But I can't keep still that long. Inevitably smudged on my pillow or something.

(4) If I pay someone to do it, by the time I get home I've knocked a dent into it.

(5) Doing gel on myself looks shit. I just don't have a steady enough hand or patience.

(6) For me gel polish at a salon has worked the best. But for fingers and toes you're looking at at least £50. Where I am they charge around £30 for hands. After two weeks the hands need to be redone. I can't afford £700 per year on that. I know there are some people who do an infill thing but it seems to cost only about £5 less than gel nails, though they say it causes less damage.

Solution:
semi-cured gel nail strips

I wish I had discovered them decades ago. (Though, to be fair, they probably weren't invented).

There are some with all designs and patterns, but I just got the plain colour ones (boring red, but I like it). I've seen them online for as cheap as a pound, but the ones I got were £8 for 20 stickers.

It took me 5 minutes to put them on. I used scissors and nail clippers to adjust the size a couple. I keep my nails short, so with the excess I cut off I could do my toes. So, fingers and toes £4. And I've got spares in case of damage.

I cured them under a lamp for 90 seconds. (I wear the UV protection gloves).

They look so, so good 😭

They didn't take an hour driving into town & getting them done. No faff of booking an appointment or waiting around as a walk in.

They don't feel thick like press-ons. No mess. No dents. No smell. No polish painted accidentally on my skin. no making small talk £4!

I've only had them on since morning. I don't know how they will hold up. I'll report back. But they've lasted long enough for an interview/event/night out, which is when I usually would have got them done.

Sorry not sorry for the spiel, but I feel excited that I've figured out a beauty thing. Like when I discovered magnetic eyeliner & eyelashes. Probably in 20 years they will tell us it's as bad as cigarettes but I'll enjoy it for now.

I use nail wraps. I've tried Lily & Fox nails and also Holy grail nails.

I considered semi cured gels as they last longer but don't like how gel polish leaves your nail when you remove them. I also didn't want the extra UV exposure, not sure if I'm overthinking that bit or not but 🤷.

I find I get annoyed by the regrowth / cuticle gap by 10-14 days post application. Which is roughly how long the standard nail wraps look pristine for. And nail wraps don't leave any damage at all. So for me they're perfect. I've got a few different Christmas designs ready, I'm applying the first ones tonight 😁

But whether it's semi cured gels or standard nail wraps... They seriously are a revelation. 😁

How do wraps work? Do you need to put polish on too?

It's a whole new world...

when I'm being waited on & looked after, my nails grow beautifully, but it so rarely happens these days, they never look amazing, but I doubt any 'fake' ones would last any better.

I need someone to cook & clean etc!! 😂

im glad you've found something that works for you!!

That's why gel has worked for me. I can do gardening, housework etc without any chipping.

@LylaLee sounds like wraps work the same as your semi cured gel strips. You stick them on, trim/file off the excess. No need to cure unless you've used semi-cured gel or crystal wraps.

You can put a clear top coat of polish, but I don't always. I do find they last a bit longer if I do, though - two weeks easily.

Those were good recommendations. Lots of fun designs. I just prefer to stick to plain.

They should go round schools, telling people.

When I've used up all the ones I have I will try wraps. Thanks.

I think I like the shininess of gel, but avoiding UV is better.

I'd rather not. They look exactly like a gel polish done at a salon. I misjudged the size of one, but it is not that noticeable.

I use wraps, which are exactly the same but don't need cured. They probably don't last quite as well - 1 to 2 weeks for me. But to remove them, I just soak in a bit of nail oil, lift the edges, and they basically slide off.

I buy them on Etsy, for about £4 per strip, and the best one are in packs which are joined by a silver strip in the middle (these are sold by lots of different sellers, but all seem to be the same thing. I usually buy from NailsEra). The ones where the wraps are individually on backing sheets are rubbish.

I use https://www.worthyof.co.uk/ for the same nails. They’re so easy to apply and last me 2-3 weeks. The customer service is awesome too.

I don’t mind showing some of nail pics so you can get an idea what they look like.

The nails seem like an absolute faff and normal nail polish would be easier, but I’m glad you’ve found something that works for you.

The magnetic eyelashes however have intrigued me!
I’ll definitely give them a try!

Edit: I’ve just seen the previous posters photos and they do look lovely and not something you could do easily with nail polish.

RudsyFarmer · 21/11/2023 18:47

I’m convinced this is just an advert.

Cheesyfootballs01 · 21/11/2023 19:13

Definitely an AD! OP why won’t you show a pic of your own nails? It’s not like you could be identified from them……

Exactly. No comment when the weird Mumsnet ad on the product was mentioned and then an inability to take a photo of said nails.

Royalbloo · 21/11/2023 19:35

Biab is excellent

Royalbloo · 21/11/2023 19:36

Here are mine - done today

Curiosity101 · 21/11/2023 19:43

Here's a couple of my nail wraps I've had recently. Definitely can't speak for whether the OP is trying to do some sort of advertising. But these are legit, from Holy Grail nails or Lily&Fox. I think the black and white was Holy grail nails, the two Halloween ones were lily and fox. I definitely found the quality of Holy grail nail was much better. So that's where I've got my new Christmas ones from. I'm swapping mine today for the first Christmas set. I'm very excited. And no... November isn't too early for Christmas nails... 😅

LinkedinLovely · 21/11/2023 20:07

No, these don't need curing, but they are Lazer printed to fit your nails. Feels like the future!

Bim2021 · 21/11/2023 20:08

I’ve discovered these recently too! I bought from oh my gosh nails. Can’t afford the salon and these work well! Last about a week for me but I’m bored and fancy a change by then. I use the normal polish wraps rather than gels.

People saying its an ad... its a well known fact that any amazon link posted on here is automatically changed BY mumsnet in order for them to a) make commission and b) prevent anyone else posting commission links (as if they didn't, we really would be spammed with ads!)

I don't know why you got a Mumsnet ad. I just did a Google lense of the packet I used. Maybe the reason I bought it was seeing it on a Mumsnet ad at some point. But as I said, I don't recommend any brand. And I don't know if the one I'm using will even survive one full day, or survive me having a shower.

I have very distinctive rings I never take off, and I'd rather not be identified.

There was a case where a stalker murdered a YouTuber. He literally saw the reflection in her eyes of the road name or tube stop she lived by, stalked her and killed her. I don't think it would get to that, but I'd rather not be linked to a thread about my boss' bad breath, or recommendations for hemrroid cream.

Mumsnet automatically adds affiliate links to links to products as a way to earn commission.

What does that mean? You scan your hand somewhere and it calculates the right size? How much do they cost?
