Nails.

I feel like in order to be well-groomed, smart nails are essential. Yes, clean and tidy is the minimum, but having a colour (or a french polish), to me, is really elegant. (And yes, I know some people don't like French polish).

(1) I've tried press-on nails. The smell of the glue is awful. Taking them off was awful & leaves nails damaged. It looks terrible when one falls off. I hate that 'thick' feeling.

(2) The same goes for acrylics.

(3) I've tried doing an ordinary polish on myself. It always looks shit. And that's even if I don't knock against something. I try to do it like when I am sitting to watch a movie, so it has an hour to dry, but I will accidentally press it into my jumper or something. I've tried doing it just before bed so there's less chance of creating a dent/smudge. But I can't keep still that long. Inevitably smudged on my pillow or something.

(4) If I pay someone to do it, by the time I get home I've knocked a dent into it.

(5) Doing gel on myself looks shit. I just don't have a steady enough hand or patience.

(6) For me gel polish at a salon has worked the best. But for fingers and toes you're looking at at least £50. Where I am they charge around £30 for hands. After two weeks the hands need to be redone. I can't afford £700 per year on that. I know there are some people who do an infill thing but it seems to cost only about £5 less than gel nails, though they say it causes less damage.

Solution:
semi-cured gel nail strips

I wish I had discovered them decades ago. (Though, to be fair, they probably weren't invented).

There are some with all designs and patterns, but I just got the plain colour ones (boring red, but I like it). I've seen them online for as cheap as a pound, but the ones I got were £8 for 20 stickers.

It took me 5 minutes to put them on. I used scissors and nail clippers to adjust the size a couple. I keep my nails short, so with the excess I cut off I could do my toes. So, fingers and toes £4. And I've got spares in case of damage.

I cured them under a lamp for 90 seconds. (I wear the UV protection gloves).

They look so, so good 😭

They didn't take an hour driving into town & getting them done. No faff of booking an appointment or waiting around as a walk in.

They don't feel thick like press-ons. No mess. No dents. No smell. No polish painted accidentally on my skin. no making small talk £4!

I've only had them on since morning. I don't know how they will hold up. I'll report back. But they've lasted long enough for an interview/event/night out, which is when I usually would have got them done.

Sorry not sorry for the spiel, but I feel excited that I've figured out a beauty thing. Like when I discovered magnetic eyeliner & eyelashes. Probably in 20 years they will tell us it's as bad as cigarettes but I'll enjoy it for now.

I'm also here for the recommendations Wink

What are the protective gloves? I have solar keratosis and can’t have UV light on my skin so never visit a salon now.

Elastica23 · 21/11/2023 16:10

Sounds great. Can you attach a link?

I've bought a few different ones so I can see which work and which don't. The ones I did today were these.

They are £10 now but they were 8 when I got them and they are different prices on different sites. Do Google lense.

Pretty much like this. But there's still some skin showing, of course.

Are they like nail wraps?

My favourite discovery has been magnetic lashes

I don't really know what nail wraps are.

These are literally like a sticker, the kind you give to kids. Except they are a bit squidgy because they are made of gel polish.

You stick them on. Trim any excess. Under the lamp. (It says 60s on the box but I did 90 for some reason). Done.

How do you take them off? Do they damage the nail underneath?

I haven't tried yet. I assume the same as gel nails.

One place I went to in the past damaged my nails. They buffed them with a machine (which was a bit sore). And the same when taking them off. Doing that repeatedly caused damage.

The lady I found in the end (and I feel a bit bad, but a saving of hundreds of pounds a year is not to be sniffed at), only gently scuffed the nails with an buffer, and took them off gently and I had no damage. She put a cotton pad with remover then covered with foil, so I'm not actually soaking my hands in remover. Then she scraped off the soft gel with no damage to my nail. I'll do it her way.

I don't have an IV lamp so that would be an added expense.

I've had great results with stickers tbh

Magnetic lashes. I bought some once which were like a sandwich of the strip, your lashes then the magnetic lashes. They felt horrible and clunky, so I decided magnetic lashes are not for me.

Then I saw the ones where you use eyeliner, and the eyeliner is normal, except for the fact that the magnetic lashes attach to it. I've never got on with stick on lashes. Sometimes you mess up your eye make up. Nine times out of ten I just give up.

Magnetic lashes are a game changer. Can you buy them in boots/superdrug? I keep losing them.

Yeah. I had it from when I tried to do my own. But at £20 it's still cheaper than a visit to the salon.

I use nail wraps. I've tried Lily & Fox nails and also Holy grail nails.

I considered semi cured gels as they last longer but don't like how gel polish leaves your nail when you remove them. I also didn't want the extra UV exposure, not sure if I'm overthinking that bit or not but 🤷.

I find I get annoyed by the regrowth / cuticle gap by 10-14 days post application. Which is roughly how long the standard nail wraps look pristine for. And nail wraps don't leave any damage at all. So for me they're perfect. I've got a few different Christmas designs ready, I'm applying the first ones tonight 😁

But whether it's semi cured gels or standard nail wraps... They seriously are a revelation. 😁

clarepetal · 21/11/2023 17:30

Can you use any lamp? I have a mylee one but am not getting on with the polish. Could I cure these press on things with it? Am tempted to give it a try!

Jewelspun · 21/11/2023 17:33

My natural nails are beautiful, strong and supple as I have for over forty five years rubbed a teeny tiny amount of Vaseline into them at bedtime.

You can get ones made out of normal polish that don't need curing. Try Holy Grail Nail classic wraps.

You can remove them with polish remover or their special stuff which kind of dissolves them.

They are BRILLIANT and I rarely paint my nails since I discovered them.

pastypirate · 21/11/2023 17:39

Can we see a pic op??

Pinkpinkpink15 · 21/11/2023 17:40

It's a whole new world...

when I'm being waited on & looked after, my nails grow beautifully, but it so rarely happens these days, they never look amazing, but I doubt any 'fake' ones would last any better.

I need someone to cook & clean etc!! 😂

im glad you've found something that works for you!!

I wish it were. I could do with the money. I don't have any recommendations as to brand. I said I've bought a few different ones. I've had this on on for about 10 hours now, so I can't really say if it is good or not in terms of being long lasting. Just that it looks really good on day 1.

I just put an amazon link because loads of people use that. I can't remember if I ordered from Amazon or eBay or somewhere else. I've been on a bit of a beauty buy rampage because I want to look good for a Christmas party coming up.

I just wanted to share because I've got great advice from threads in the past and I wanted to pay it forward.
