Toddler being a bugger with his antibiotics

Sorry for posting here. Did try chat but no response. He spat out most of his second dose. Does that matter? As its only one dose. With the others he got most of it in.

Tia

Tried everything with my DS. Put it in a yoghurt, in a smoothie- apparently they tasted too 'spicy'.

Pinned him down but he fought like a wild animal and spat it out/it came out of his nose.

Honestly we were never able to give him a course of antibiotics. One time the hospital doctors threatened to do them via IV, but luckily he recovered before it became necessary.

Exhausting.

I'm glad he recovered before having to go the IV route. He took the last one. Let's hope it continues as I think his tonsillitis is bacterial

If he vomits it back up, after pinning . Call them and ask for another antibiotic.

I'm sure my son wouldn't take the one you have mentioned but will take amoxicillin and others.

He took amoxicillin no bother. If he spits it out again will defo go with that one

It's phenoxymethylpenicillin

The tablets taste disgusting to me and I'm an adult!

Nephew had it recently and we ended up giving him a sugar cube then syringing the antibiotics into his mouth. Far from ideal but it also meant he got it and didn't puke it back up!

My little one isn't great at things like this. He had a course around the age of 2 and hated it til my husband wrapped him in a big blanket and shouted, "Baby burrito!". Very random - apparently he'd seen it on Youtube - but it bloody worked! I was so stressed at him missing doses that I would have tried most things. Good luck! X

Sounds like a great idea and glad it worked. Yes I can't have him spitting it out again. Thinking his tonsillitis is bacterial. Thank you. X

Can't imagine they taste nice. I don't want to taste the liquid. Smells vile. Sounds like a good plan. Just have to hope he keep them down. Only one spit up atm. Can't have him doing it again as we think his tonsillitis is bacterial

You'll need to pin him down, shoot them into the cheek, give him kisses and a cuddle and he'll be fine. Not fun for anyone but medications are essential if they're poorly 🤷‍♀️

Gonna have to. Can't have him spitting it out again. We thinking it's bacterial his tonsillitis.

Another thing it's says to give on a empty tummy I may not have been able every time as he's a bottomless pit and never stops eating. Will it be okay?

We were (still are!) the same re. eating and he definitely didn't always have them on an empty stomach.

crazycatladie · 18/11/2023 20:34

I did a soon of antibiotics followed by a spoon of Nutella.

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 18/11/2023 20:36

Switch to tablets. Put it on a spoon and cover with jelly and it is straight down the hatch! The tablet form is bullet shaped capsules. Only discovered this with our last child!

19 month will be too young for the tablets won't they?

Remember ds being sent into hospital unwell as we couldn’t even get him to take calpol. The nurse squirted it into his mouth, held his mouth shut then triumphantly announced ‘that’s how you do it!’ Then ds opened his mouth and spat it back out! She then realised we weren’t exaggerating or not trying!

Haha oh dear. Little tinker. I just hope my son takes the rest of it. Only spat a tiny bit out with this dose

We have just had to do this with our DD. No chance it was getting in her on its own. Tried once and she spat it out. Tried again and she cried until she started gagging. In the end, we just mixed it in to half a post of chocolate mouse and popped some chocolate chips in there. Worked a treat and by the end of the course, she would feed it to herself.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 18/11/2023 21:02

It tastes awful. The only way we managed it was to offer good incentives!!

SpicyNoodleSoup · 18/11/2023 21:03

That's meant to say half a pot of chocolate mousse 😂

jollybynamejollybynature · 18/11/2023 21:04

My little one (13months old) had that one not too long ago (he was around 12months old) for the exact same thing too.
Can honestly say it was a battle to get it down him for the full 10 days especially as it was 4 times a day too!

We just made sure it was at least 30mins before eating and an hour after but there were times that it couldn't be done.
Nursery also missed a few doses too.

Don't really have any tricks or tips as it was such a battle and we had a few tears too but we found picking him up and giving it out a syringe in stages worked best for us.

HungryandIknowit · 18/11/2023 21:06

You can ask the pharmacy (when they're open) what you can mix it with. They gave us tablets once which we crushed and mixed with yoghurt. That worked well.

Fluffycatbelly · 18/11/2023 21:16

My oldest was prescribed the same and they're horrible, tastes like battery acid. I ended up getting the tablets to crush and hide in a shot glass amount of super strength strawberry nesquik. The baby also got prescribed them a month later and I just refused to take the penicillin prescription, they gave the yellow flavoured alcoholic l amoxicillin instead

needtonamechangeforthis1 · 18/11/2023 22:05

I really don't understand why they make them taste so vile! Why can't they be made to taste better so kids will take them 🤷🏻‍♀️ it really doesn't make sense!
I get the argument of not wanting overdosing but is that really likely to happen? They can make calpol taste ok so why not antibiotics?

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 18/11/2023 23:23

He will swallow it with jelly so would be fine
