To think that if you send an email, you don't need to text someone to say you've emailed them?

Why do people do this?!

I know you have sent an email - I got a notification for it in the same way I got a notification from the text message you sent to tell me you sent the email!

Drives me insane!!

Oh I love it when people do this. I've had my email since 2002 so it's fairly clogged with spam. Plus I don't check my mail nearly as often as WhatsApp and haven't set notifications as it's mostly spam.

Missingthegore · 18/11/2023 05:15

I have had important emails somehow end up in my spam despite having previous emails from that person. I got very pissy with conveyancer who rang me chasing paperwork for emails I'd never seen (in my junk).
I have text people at work asking them to prioritise a response to an email when I know they get so many everyday / have other duties so they are not in front of a computer all day.
I have 2 personal email accounts....one I use for all those shite sign ups for online purchases / other junk and another one that my bills come to or I would use if job hunting/ selling or buying a house just to reduce the volume I need to triage

Hmm ok I see how context is important. And I am someone who has email notifications on so it seems pointless to me to send a further message when I'd already got notified the first time.

And it's my ex who is currently doing it, so that might explain my grumpiness!

Oh well then
If it's your ex doing it

Wait until you have to forward important emails to a teen! It'll never be read unless a text notification about the email is sent as well, because 'who uses email now Mum? You're sooo old-fashioned!' 😁

GodDammitCecil · 17/11/2023 20:39

I did this to someone yesterday - so irrationally assumed this was a passive aggressive dig at me! Until you said it was your ex.

Not everyone has notifications on for personal emails. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Someone I hadn’t heard from in a while texted me asking for some information on behalf of someone else, that was pretty sensitive.

I was out and about and didn’t get to it until later. I looked for the info, compiled it into an email, and because it was hours after the original text has been sent, I replied to the text saying I’d sent the info (it was too much to send by text).

I just felt bad that it had taken me a while to come back, and I wasn’t sure how often they checked their email. Is that OK?!

Edited

Haha unless you are my ex it's not a dig at you!! I think it's completely acceptable in your situation, you are exempted from my annoyance!

I think it’s common to not have notifications on for email.

This. If you don’t tell me to look, it could be several days till I check my email.

So it seems it's just me who operates in the world of emails in a totally different way to everyone else.

I have several different email addresses that I check regularly in the same way that I check my whatsapp and they all have notifications set up. Perhaps I'm just not as popular as a lot of people here and don't get that many emails so it's not a distraction?!

Anyway, thanks for introducing me to how everyone else does email!

Because they want a reply now / it's urgent / important / you're late to send them one.

I use email like you do, but if I notice that others don't, then I take mitigating action. So far that has just been my two teenage sons, sometimes my DH (but unfortunately he doesn't check his personal texts very often either), and one other person. It's definitely not the default.

However, at work, some people only check their email once or twice a day, in which case I default to Teams messaging.

youveturnedupwelldone · 18/11/2023 08:10

I ask people to do this, I am terrible with my emails so it does help if someone points out an urgent one.

I had a boyfriend once who used to ring me to see if I'd got the text he'd literally just sent me, it was endearingly annoying!

HolefreeGrail · 18/11/2023 08:14

Drives me mad. One particular colleague sends me a teams message to tell me they have sent an email every time. I respond extremely quickly to the email. Sometimes I respond on teams just saying that I have already responded to the email. And I’ve also suggested that I don’t require a teams message as well as an email, but to deaf ears…

But why do you let your email get clogged with spam? Since GDPR came in, it's really easy to unsubscribe from unwanted mailing lists. There's always an 'unsubscribe' link at the bottom. It's basic housekeeping that we should all be teaching to our children.

When you've had the same address for 20+ years there are hundreds trying to spam you. As often as you click unsubscribe, a new thing pops up.

Yabu! If new things are popping up it's because you are subscribing to them, whether knowingly or not. If you are buying things online, do you make sure you tick/untick the marketing permission box? (Sometimes it is ticked by default, or ticking the box means you don't want the marketing, so you need to read what is says).

I have had my email address for as long as you have and my account is clean of spam. So no excuses! 🙂

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/11/2023 08:29

Some people don’t check emails regularly, or they get so many that it’s easy to miss one.

underneaththeash · 18/11/2023 08:30

I have to do this for Brownies, otherwise half the pare re say that haven’t received/lnoticed it. It’s usually for consent forms.

even with a text and an email some parents will forget to fill them on or not follow the instructions!

melj1213 · 18/11/2023 09:47

I will only text someone that I have sent them an email if it is a) urgent b) requires a response and hasn't received one after a reasonable amount of time or c) I want confirmation they have received it.

I actually did the email/text thing just yesterday because a friend and. I are going to a WSL football game together this Sunday, I bought the tickets ages ago but they only emailed me the ticket QR codes yesterday with instructions that every person has to have their own ticket on their own phone, no having one person with multiple people's tickets on one phone (unless it's a child's ticket), so I had to forward the email to her so she could download her ticket. I then text her to say "Hey I've sent over the email for the game so you can download your ticket to your phone, let me know asap if there are any issues opening the link to download it" because we very rarely email each other so I have no idea how often she checks her emails and because I needed to know that the email had sent correctly so that if there was a problem I had the maximum amount of time to rectify it before the game.

I don't really use email for communication (IE having repeated conversations with other people) I use WhatsApp/FB Messenger for those, so my email is more of a place I keep reference documents eg invoices, tickets for shows, email confirmations of reservations, contacting companies/people I don't know etc and I only email someone either to forward a relevant document or follow up on something they've sent. I check my email once a day at most, unless I'm waiting on something specific being sent, and definitely don't have notifications set up on my phone as there's no need to be alerted to the fact I've made an order on ASOS/Shein/BooHoo etc ... I know because I've literally just done it

It's not just you! Reading this thread was making me think I am odd, as I check my emails numerous times a day (I don't get hundreds of emails either), and as I also spend a lot of time on my laptop I can see when an email arrives. As soon as I see an email arrive I pounce on it, just in case it might be something interesting Grin

Some people are rubbish with email, including my 2 sons. If I have an email I want to share with them, I don't forward it, I save it as a pdf and share it to Whatsapp.

I have tried to explain to them that emails are important for things like job applications and bills, but they are convinced email will be phased out by the time they need to worry about such things.

What do the email non-believers do when they order stuff online.

Literally every time I order something online, it asks for an email address, and that’s where they send the confirmation and tracking details to.

Surely youngsters also order stuff online? Do they only provide a mobile number for texting?

They put in their email address and get the acknowledgement, tracking etc which, in most cases, they can follow based on the subject line, without reading the actual email. If something they ordered doesn't turn up, they might check the emails, but in most cases they don't need to.

My eldest son is at uni and recently applied for a summer internship. He filled in a very basic application form and got an acknowledgement. He then thought that was it. After several days and some (reluctant but sometimes necessary) helicopter parenting from me, he was eventually persuaded to read the acknowledgement, which he discovered contained instructions to complete an online assessment. He'd have completely missed that if left to his own devices.

I'm no "youngster" but I don't really 'use' my email for anything more than a storage space for reference documents. If you want to communicate with me then you're better using WhatsApp/messenger or text than email.

I order stuff online and get email confirmations but other than checking the email account to see that, following the placing of an order on ASOS, I have received an email from ASOS with a subject "Order #1234 Confirmation" I don't do anything with it unless there is a problem with the order/delivery.

Some people I know check their emails repeatedly during the day, others check a couple of times a week; I check my email maybe once a day but that "check" will be opening my inbox, scrolling through any unread emails to see if there's anything important and/or from certain people and if not then everything just gets "marked as read" and/or deleted (if it's just random mailing list stuff) which takes literally a couple of minutes, then every few months I'll go through my inbox and either file stuff I need to keep or delete things I no longer need.

Delphigirl · 18/11/2023 23:32

The only time I do this if someone asks me a question by text and I provide the answer by eg forwarding an email. Then I reply to the text “you’ve got mail” so they don’t think I’m leaving them hanging.
