To just want to stop fucking coughing?

QuestionableMouse · 16/11/2023 20:23

Have covid in early Oct, was ill for about ten days with it. Then had a chest infection, spent seven days on antibiotics, felt better but still had a mild cough. Woke up this morning with a proper heavy cold, complete with snot and a cough. I feel like I've been coughing for ages and I'm so sick of it!

Any tips on stopping this fucking cough? I'm drinking lemon and honey, have various pastelles to soothe my throat and have my humidifier working. Anything else I can try?

Anything with codeine in will help

MegaPixie09 · 16/11/2023 20:46

I feel you. I’ve had a cough for the last 3 weeks. My entire back is fucked from the constant coughing.

Keen to see what responses you get but the only thing that has helped ease my cough is having a teaspoon of honey by itself.

LeggyLegsEleven · 16/11/2023 20:47

Anti histamine?

ThomasinaLivesHere · 16/11/2023 20:49

I’ve been there recently so feel for you!

Coughing is good. If you've got shit in your lungs, you need to cough it up.

your problem is not that you are coughing, it's the fact that there is something inside you that doesn't need to be there.

gofullpelt · 16/11/2023 20:50

I'm not sure you can get codeine over the counter anymore. They stopped selling pholcodeine/day nurse because of some very tenuous link with anaesthetics and anaphylactic shock.

I'm sure it's for our own good, but I am still very cross about this! Pholcodeine is brilliant.

QuestionableMouse · 16/11/2023 20:54

Not coughing anything up though!

I have codeine, have been thinking of taking some but it makes me really sicky. 😕

Just had a spoon of honey, not sure it's done much but it's the cheap runny stuff.

I'm exactly the same, had covid beginning of October and am still coughing constantly and wheezing. So sick of it now, I've had a course of antibiotics (because I was coughing up blood) and then a course of steroids and am still coughing constantly. Have a chest x-ray booked in now because it's been going on so long. Would love any tips on how to just make it stop! My DP is exactly the same and for the same amount of time. It's fun in our household right now

QuestionableMouse · 16/11/2023 21:01

I've given in and taken some codeine. Would rather feel sick than coughing so much.

I'm sorry you're suffering too @Rockfordpeach !@Rockfordpeach ! It absolutely sucks!

You’re not asthmatic are you? I have mild asthma and was coughing constantly at night, I could be up for a couple of hours wheezing and my reliever inhaler barely helped. Thought it was a chest infection as it was productive but I think now it was a side effect of asthma attacks.

Then I had my asthma review, prescribed the brown (steroid?) inhaler and after a couple of days my night cough was completely gone.

socks1107 · 16/11/2023 21:11

It took me 7 weeks after covid in September to stop coughing. I had antibiotics too it just took ok

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 16/11/2023 21:15

Bastards banning pholcodiene.

Co-codamol will work if you can stomach it.

desikated · 16/11/2023 21:17

ugh. you have my sympathy. I had a persistent cough for about 2 months in June/July following covid. I assume they were linked.

The only thing I found helped was honey - literal tablespoonfuls. I did also start using a saline nasal spray as a pharmacist said that might help ease throat tickling. Not sure it did any good but it is generally good for you nose anyway.

And - weirdly - actually trying as hard as I could to not cough. I know that sounds mad. But it seemed a though once I had started coughing it set off a fit for ages. If I could really 'hold' it and try not to cough (obviously not always possible) it did then die down and help.

I hope it calms soon. I am now out the other side and touch wood no long term cough or problems breathing.

No, no asthma, though my mum does. I think I'm going to ring the doctors in the morning and if I can get an appointment I'll ask about it.

Sitting in a warm bed with a warm drink is what I do. I've had a cough for 3 weeks now.

Currently in bed with a huge cup of honey and lemon! And a massive box of tissues!

I had similar problems and the cough lasted at least 2 months. Dr then gave me a nasal spray which did seem to help shift it. I was pissed off he even suggested it tbh but he wasn’t wrong

TheChosenTwo · 16/11/2023 21:29

I had Covid at the end of august and my
cough has gone through so many different stages. I was at dry and tickly
for a solid 6 weeks in the middle stages and in the last couple of weeks it’s slipped back down into my chest. So bloody annoying!
I drank a whole bottle of Benelyn in about 12 hours a few weeks ago because I was in meetings for work all day and it was the only thing that gave me 5 minutes of relief from coughing! It’s not sustainable so haven’t bothered with it again but it did help in the very short term.

This is a good cough suppressant, helps me.

fetchacloth · 16/11/2023 21:55

It could be asthma OP
I've had asthma for over 30 years and two years ago I had covid. I had similar symptoms to you and mine went on for 8 months and became long covid.
During that time I had 4 courses of antibiotics and oral steroids which didn't really work. I also had 3 changes of brown inhaler until I found one that calmed the coughing.
I also had several asthma attacks, 2 of which I had to call 999 as I couldn't control the attacks myself.
I got there in the end but it was a long recovery time. 😔

It would help you if you could see an asthma GP or nurse in your surgery as they are familiar with the symptoms. Good luck 💐

QuestionableMouse · 16/11/2023 22:18

I have Long Covid already so stuff seems to hit me harder 😬.

Will ring the gp in the morning. We have a very good asthma nurse so will see if I can see her! Judging by the amount of snot (sorry) I do think this is a cold but I can't hurt to get checked!

I'm experiencing the same op!

Stinking cold and hacking cough

What does codeine do then? How does that help a cough, I thought it was a painkiller
