To just want to stop fucking coughing?

QuestionableMouse · 16/11/2023 20:23

Have covid in early Oct, was ill for about ten days with it. Then had a chest infection, spent seven days on antibiotics, felt better but still had a mild cough. Woke up this morning with a proper heavy cold, complete with snot and a cough. I feel like I've been coughing for ages and I'm so sick of it!

Any tips on stopping this fucking cough? I'm drinking lemon and honey, have various pastelles to soothe my throat and have my humidifier working. Anything else I can try?

I'm experiencing the same op!

Stinking cold and hacking cough

What does codeine do then? How does that help a cough, I thought it was a painkiller

I'm not sure of the exact mechanism but it works on your brain to suppress the cough urge. Seems to be helping me atm, even if I do feel a bit sick!

I think the Robitussin is codeine related, so double check!

I had Covid about a month ago, awful cough but not chesty, a really ugly cough that made me heave. Still got it, but not as bad, it's just really irritating. Driving me mad, I just want it to go!!

Apparently lemon & honey can exacerbate some coughs - maybe give it up for 24hrs and see if there’s an improvement?

Thanks! I've an appointment with the nurse prescriber at 1pm so will hopefully get some help. My ribs and back are so sore from it! 😣

It's another chest infection and I've got antibiotics for two weeks! Hopefully they get rid of it this time because I feel like total crap 😣😩

I also asked about asthma - she said she wasn't sure but I'm booked in to see the asthma nurse on Monday!

Benylin night time . Absolutely marvellous and knocks me out for the night!

Have they given you clarithromycin? I’ve probably spelt it wrong but they often give out amoxicillin first.

My sympathies op, also had covid start of october and just about over a cold but the cough has lingered on

RedorangeyellowBLACK · 17/11/2023 16:15

I have the same, nothing has helped so far.

I picked up some kind of respiratory virus 7 weeks ago (two negative covid tests but you never know?!) and have had a hacking cough ever since.

It went away about 2 weeks ago but has come back. It’s like a really irritating tickle at the back of my throat, I try to suppress it but it’s impossible. Once it starts, I can’t stop coughing. Had to walk out of the Co-op the other day as I was coughing until my eyes were streaming, was getting some funny looks (you know, the kind of cough that no one would have batted an eyelid at pre-Covid times!).

Weirdly, it doesn’t wake me at all.

Spoke to the nurse practitioner this morning, she’s come to the conclusion it’s reflux and has presume a PPI 🤷‍♀️

My BIL swears by Bronchostop so I may get some tomorrow or my favourite, Buttercup.

Superscientist · 17/11/2023 16:26

I had bronchitis earlier this year after having a cold.
I coughed all night every night for 3 months then I got another cold and I coughed all night and all day for 2 weeks. It took another 4-6 weeks after that to clear it.

I had to avoid steam as it felt close and I couldn't breathe. Warm drinks not hot. Avoid exerting myself too much so had reduce the number of times I climbed the stairs during the day

At night olbas on my pillow and in a humidifier. Cocodamol as I can't take nsaids and got a cough syrup that reduces the need to cough. I slept sitting upright on about 4 pillows as any degree of lying down my the cough so much worse.

Ponderingtosk · 17/11/2023 16:29

We’ve just had this, three weeks long ish, week one horrendous cough, struggled to breath a few times, subsided over the next week and into a third week, & week four, no answers I’m afraid. Covid negative all the way through.

Hopefully the ABs work this time.
The visit to the Asthma nurse might be more useful - they are more knowledgeable than GPs with these complaints 😄

QuestionableMouse · 18/11/2023 13:16

I really hope so! I'm three in atm and I do feel a bit better. It's amoxicillin again but a much longer course.

fetchacloth · 18/11/2023 18:38

Hopefully you're feeling better soon OP. The longer course of Amoxicillin might just crack it this time.
Long covid certainly lives up to it's name I'm afraid.🙄
